Once I left the Shelter, Jiggs was pulling to try and not get into the back seat in the parking lot. I had the door open (a SUV) for him to jump in the back onto a dog sling covered seat. I had to ask him 3x’s and he looked at the seat and pulled to go off and away from the car. I tapped on the seat and he finally easily hopped in. He mostly lay down calmly during the entire trip. He did not want to drive w/head out the window. (I had his leash fastened up front.) First time I have not seen a dale not hang out the window! No crying in the car.
When we got to the border’s house. There were about 6 little rat terrier types who were constantly doing high pitched yapping/barking lined up in the front window. These dogs appeared to frighten Jiggs a lot. Once out of the car, I again saw that he was trying to flee- like in a panic to run away.I had to have a firm hold. He had to walk past that window and he stayed frightened until we walked past and around the house to the side where the barking sound was gone, through the fence in back and into the back door.
Jiggs inside. He had frightened and uncertain movements, not trusting the environment. He did not look me in the eye for about 10 min. She was wonderful letting him look all over the room while lose. Jigs seems very feral, almost not responding to human petting with no reaction toward his humans. He is such a nice boy. He just seems completely focused on the immediate situation.
I shared with the border that Jiggs/Airedales will back away backwards and strongly jerk their head and slip out of a collar very quickly if they want to flee. That this behavior will happen very quickly! I instructed her 3 times to tighten his collar, that it was still 2″ too lose. I told her they were VERY smart and also VERY stubborn and DO think they will get their way, until corrected. I was concerned that Jiggs could jump over out of the 3-4′ fence. Thankfully she keeps all dogs on a leash if outside.
Jiggs was going to get the biggest cage and she left the door open for him to try and enter when he was ready. It was a crate with no tray in bottom or blanket.
I am sorry I don’t remember the boarders name! She was very nice, appeared very humane. She knew nothing about Airedales and their behaviors. I hopefully helped her to be comfortable with what to expect and how to keep him from getting lose.
If I can be of help with anyone in the future just let me know.
Oh yea, this woman was friends with the boarding woman (keith and ?) from the vet. Can’t recall her name, but, she knows Airedales from my dog boarding with her. They were going to talk!
___________This is from Susan Chinouth who picked up Jiggs from the shelter and took him to the woman who is boarding him, Loretta Cloyd. She boards in her home. Aside from Susan’s update, Loretta and I texted back and forth last evening. She said he was a bit skittish at first but ok with her now. He’s eating fine and his poop is good. She’s feeding him Petcurean Go! Solutions Skin & Coat Care, This is a very expensive food that Chewy sent her in error but told her to keep it. She had a harness and collar, fortunately, because he didn’t have one. She doesn’t groom, but she brushed him out yesterday and cut off some dreadlocks.
I had made an appointment for him this morning at Mountain Empire Small Animal Clinic but she couldn’t take him, so I had to cancel it. He’s paid through Wednesday morning, so we must find a place for him to go. I’ve tried Brock Serna, who hasn’t responded to my phone call and email about Jiggs. I followed up with a text to ask if he was still interested in adopting and he said he was but he had changed jobs and could no longer take a dog to work with him. My text asking how long his dog would be alone during the day went unanswered.
I’m out of practice in dealing with intake and should have found someone else to take him to the vet, but Susan wasn’t available. Nancy Harr never responded to my phone call, but she’s 40 minutes away anyway. I asked the shelter to send me his records — they gave him routine shots + rabies — but they didn’t send them. He’ll need a microchip and wellness check and grooming.
I’ll be looking for someplace for this boy plus we have a female to place also, is that right? I’m really out of practice.

September 8, 2022 at 5:01 pm in reply to: 2022-23 Jiggs, ~2 yo M/N, Johnson City, TN Shelter Foster with Nancy Harr #29716From Susan Chinouth:
Lynn’s kennel does take big dogs. You can try Kittie and Ralph at 423-542-9157, and 239- 691-9344. You may have to leave a message. I think they are full but Zoey is going there Monday. But for in the future!
Mr Jiggs is very well behaved. Not jumping on me. I did think he was hyper but just came out of a cage and was standing in front of CATS in a room. So…..The boy LOVES to chase cats! He was NOT pulling to the extreme where they will gag themselves. Just barely choking once or twice. So I do think again, well behaved and probably used to walking on a leash. He needs a LOT of filling out. He is tall and square built but taller than longer. His head looks oversized but I believe that is where all the hair is and his backbone is showing! Poor boy! He sits right away and lays down to “lie down” command. I would say he is about 55-60 # (because Zoey is 85).Not a premium dog with curls. Some mid coat white hairs. Hair is course and wavy. Legs practically NO long hair. Matted at the head neck and butt.
He is staring at the 2 cat rooms in the pictures. Very focused and unable to look me in the eye (well of course, I am just 1 of many humans lately and not a CAT).- This reply was modified 2 years, 3 months ago by Jackie Cash.

Subject: Re: Fwd: Airedale Terrier in your shelterHe seems to be fine with other dogs, he was found with a little chihuahua in our parking lot so we’re assuming they lived together. He is a little timid/shy but he is already improving just in the time that he has been here. He is a little underweight and could use a good grooming. He has been fine with both men and women here.

August 16, 2022 at 6:14 pm in reply to: 2022 Brock Serna, Murfreesboro TN, Good fence, Not ADT exp, prev Scotties, 0 pets, 0 kids – adopted Cat 2023 #29625See Home Evaluation Form as Zip File at beginning of Brock’s post/application.
Approved to adopt; notified Brock that he & brother Reed are approved. Talked to him and sent email about Jasper in AR. May not work, bc AR representative Donna in Fayetteville said he needs to go to an Airedale-experienced home bc he’s large, untrained, and pulls on leash.
I’ve emailed Diane Nix who did home visit to ask for a physical description of Brock and his brother. If they’re big guys it might not be a prob.
