10/04/19: Spoke with Tabitha at the vet’s office: They wouldn’t hesitate giving her a great recommendations. She keeps her animals up to date and brings them in when they need something. Tabitha wants to come back as one of the Beach’s animals. Great animal parents!

10/04/19: Had a long, delightful conversation with Pat Beach. She is an experienced terrier mom though she currently has a poodle-mix and 2 cats. The poodle mix, Lucky, is a certified therapy dog through TDI and visits hospitals and schools for reading programs with kids. They live on the beach on Fripp Island and travel back to CO at least once a year because they keep a condo there. They love their animals and take great care of them. She will use a 30-ft training lead to take her new Airedale to the beach.

I asked about where their house is and what is around it. One hazard they have is alligators. The alligators are in the pond at the end of her street. Hard to see because there are trees. Leash training is so important. She has never had a problem with them. The only dog that ever got loose in her yard was Moby her big dog. She left Moby outside and he got out. Had a great time. Scared all the cleaning people. He was a big dog and was so happy to see anyone. A neighbor took him and put him in Pat’s “storage yard.”

She has one geriatric dog already, a 13-y-o dog, doing well, no health issues. Unfortunately, he and dash share the same fear of lightning and thunder. An aromatherapy and some treats with CBD oil make it less frightening. She bought the aromatx from a groomer. Big into holistic health and responses for animals. Never comfortable giving them to dogs. Lucky is poodle mix 20 pounds. TDI Therapy Dog International, certified. Most laid-back dog she’s ever had. She goes skiing in CO every year. She has a condo there. Son has JRT-dominant; daughter has rat terrier pup. All sleeping together. They all get along. Only careful with food. At one point, nephew’s dog was food dominant with her dog. Not with the other dog. Thanksgiving week is great. And they all get along.
She’s had a lot of terriers.

Small 40 x 40 yard. Is this the size of the yard or a pen? 4-1/2 ft fence behind the house. 2 decks and 2 sets of stairs going to ground floor. First thing in the morning, Lucky goes out the door and goes down and goes to the yard. River rock with plants and bushes and trees and comes back in. Then breakfast and walk. I asked her about Sago palms and she has them but not the female plants that are toxic. I asked about the Airedale getting hip dysplasia and the stairs. They have an Elevator. They remodeled the original house and initially she was going to put closets in where the elevator shaft was.

She tried to adopt another dog a year ago. He was a mix from Noah’s Ark in Beaufort. Augie was blinded as a puppy. They took him and rehabbed him and he was adopted by someone else along with another dog. Then the big dog died and they decided to get a mastiff female and breed and the Mastiff didn’t like Augie. He was wonderful and he behaved beautifully. Just a cutie. He was larger than Lucky. Schipperke, larger. First couple of days ok. He bit her 3 times. One of the women at Noah’s Ark had been bitten. Little over a year ago. She took him back; She simply took him back and said I can’t have a biter.

10/04/19: ARG web site got a message from Donna Duncan asking about Banjo. I replied to her through our web site and told her Banjo is being fostered, yada yada, fill out an application if you’re in our region.

Minutes later we got another message through our website “in reply to Donna Duncan,” from Tony Ferguson saying, “Please remove me from your list.”

?? I do not understand how he got a message sent to Donna Duncan. ??

10/03/19: Maddox is really settling in and is not counter surfing or humping like he did the fist couple of days. They’re working on the separation anxiety and that has improved as well.

Hi, Terry. Congratulations on your Goldendoodle. One year old is a great age. I hope you have many happy years together. I do want to apologize again. At one point, I think we had an automatic email that was generated when an application was submitted, but that may not be working. Still, it should not have taken us one month to contact you.

If you ever decide to add an Airedale playmate to your family, please contact us. We will keep your application on file.

Best to you and your new pup.

I wanted another Airedale so badly, but, when I never heard a word back, even to say my application was received, I began to search elsewhere. I now have a 1yr. old Goldendoodle, who I rehomed & could not be happier! Sorry about your volunteer’s loss-I understand the heartbreak only too well. Thanks for reaching out.

Hello, Terry. I just left you a voice message to speak to you about your application to adopt an Airedale. Please accept our apology for taking so long to contact you. Our volunteer who was to contact you has had a terrible time for the past month or more with her Airedale who was diagnosed with lymphoma and they had to let her go Saturday. She’s stepping back for a bit.

Please contact me if you are still interested in adopting an Airedale.

                    Thank you for your patience.

                      09/30/19:
Oh, I’m so sorry to hear how he did after you left this morning. That is terrible. Is he interested in toys? I agree with the vet’s suggestion of leaving & quick returns. I have used Thunder Shirts for two of my Airedales who became very agitated with storms and fireworks. It helps, but it’s not enough, or wasn’t for my two. Many people are using CBD oil for anxiety with great results, but most vets will not recommend it. I’ve not had experience with trazodone nor fluoxetine for dogs, but for short-term use, it appears to be safe.

I like her suggestions — leaving and returning quickly and doing that at random perhaps several times a day, then coming back in. Don’t make a big deal of coming back in (or of leaving). Once he seems calm at you leaving for 2 minutes, gradually increase the time you stay outside. Kongs are great. I have several.

Are you using a crate? You might also experiment with using a crate by feeding him or giving him good treats to go into his crate, but leaving it open most of the time. Heather said they did use it initially with him, but haven’t in the last few years. She also said he’s never been destructive when they’re gone.

Here are some more articles about things you can do to engage him.

I look forward to hearing about his blood work tomorrow.

These are great resources, thank you!

I’ll give you a better update after I get his bloodwork back tomorrow. That will drive some of the food discussion based on his valuse.

                      In brief:

He was very accommodating but quite clingy to Susan and Me. Did not “act a fool” in any way whatsoever. They just fawned over him, but of course they know how much we love our dogs.

Toenails were dealt with as much as possible, one got “quicked” a bit and bled, but he didn’t flinch or even seem to notice.

He does have an active skin infection, lots of flaky skin at the base of his tail (top) and armpits. He got a shot for that. Should clear up in a week or so, they really like the idea of head-and-shoulders they have used it with great success themselves. We’ll continue that when we get him groomed in a few weeks.

Teeth – His teeth are ok. Lots of tartar buildup, but it flakes off pretty easily, and all indications are that the teeth underneath are healthy and strong. I have noticed some gum bleeding as we’ve moved him to dry kibble. That should resolve as he gets more used to it. Should have them cleaned in the next 6 months. Vet said this is a low priority compared to the rest.

He has a small growth on his left shoulder. Probably nothing, too small to do a fine needle aspiration. We’ll get it removed and biopsied when we get his teeth cleaned. This is also low priority.

He has a few fatty growths that are not unusual. (Nash had them as well) She said they were like the doggy version of cellulite.

His ears – oh my those ears – he was actually surprisingly good during the exam, didn’t even flinch when they stuck the scope down in there. He does have an active yeast infection, she kind of questioned if it had ever been successfully treated based on his condition. The vet plucked all the hair out of his ears and that was quite painful by the way he reacted. The condition was bad enough (and untreated long enough) that they didn’t feel they could fully resolve it with all that hair in there harboring microorganisms. They rinsed it out with cleanser and put the waxy anti-fungal treatment in his ears. They said he liked the rinsing, it was soothing. He won’t be able to hear well for a few days until it goes away a little. We’ll get him rechecked and see if a second treatment is necessary. We occasionally had to do that for Nash our other Airedale.

Separation anxiety/humping – This is the biggie, and the most time consuming – Based on her evaluation of him and the recent emotional trauma, she was quite concerned about some of these behaviors. I went to work this morning and then met Susan at the vet. He screamed and cried for nearly 90 minutes after I left – only stopped when Susan took him to the car to go to the vet. Based on that and his previous family’s reports of howling, Dr. Cross thought it best that we deal with it head on with some medication and other things to try to settle him in the new environment. She felt like this was a large concern, and we have a honeymoon period that we can work with to keep these from becoming chronic behaviors. She’s recommending short term medications trazadone and fluoxetine (prozac). Trazadone has an immediate effect, and prozac will be useful over a few month period but takes at least a month to reach therapeutic levels.
Since the plan is short term (we talked about 6 months, maybe a bit longer), and based on our evaluation of the extreme anxiety he is experiencing (both new environment, new rules, new family and loss of family) and our own perception of his lack of behavioral training in his past, we agreed. Based on what we saw today, we couldn’t leave him alone in the house without him possibly hurting himself or tearing something up. (She’s seen some CRAZY extreme cases, he’s not there, but he does need some help.)
She also suggested a few other items to help:
We got a pheromone calming diffuser for upstairs and downstairs. They’ve had good success with this and other cases.
She suggested some puzzle toys to give him when leaving (like a Kong or other reward based toy) and taking it away when we come home. This makes “leaving” a reward time.
She gave us some exercises to desensitize him to the “triggers”, like picking up keys, putting on shoes, etc. Walking out and locking the door but only being gone 2 minutes. Doing things that point to “leaving”, but doing them at frequent random times to remove the triggers. The goal is to make those “everyday boring stuff.”
She also suggested getting a thundershirt. She actually said she thought they were bogus until a few patients tried them and they had a nice calming effect on the dogs. I tend to think this might help since he’s an “extreme snuggler” where he wants me to hold him tight and love on him.

I think that’s it for the moment, I’ll let you know how the lab values are and if we need to make any adjustments to his food. We’re having to give a little bit of “juicy food” to entice him to eat the kibble. He acts like he has only gotten soft food in the past, and his teeth might bear that out.

Thanks again for making Maddox part of our family. He is a super sweet boy that needs a little help. We’ll give him all the love and help he needs.

I attached a pic of him at the vet office. 🙂

Hi, Barbara. I’ve attached all the records we have on Lilly. You may have received the same thing.

Yes, being in FL, Lilly will need to have heart worm preventative and flea/tick preventative. I cannot answer your questions about reimbursable expenses quite yet. Certainly, normal vet care will be covered. Because ARG has not been a part of National Airedale Rescue for many years, we have not used the Senior Fund for any of our Airedales/adopters. I have written to Sidney for clarification and I’m sure she’ll get back to me promptly and I’ll have answers for you.

As to food, please check out http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com for recommendations for senior dogs. I know they will categorize by kibble, canned, and life stages; they also include pricing information. They will also tell you if there have been recalls on any of the foods.

It’s great that she loves her walks. From what we’ve been told, she’s been cooped up either in her owner’s home or in different boarding situations for a long time. And now she gets to breathe lots of fresh air and new smells and has someone who’s going to care for her every day. That tail will come up soon!

I’ll get back to you as soon as I have answers! Thank you, Barbara.

Hi Jackie, Lilly has been absolutely perfect…so far.

The paperwork James gave me didn’t have much in medical records but she was dosed with Heartgard and given Frontline on the 19th by the shelter. Since I was in California, I never had to use meds for heartworm or fleas/ticks but I know I’ll need to here in Florida. So my question is what kind of reimbursement will I be able to get from the senior fund before I hit up Amazon and get a vet visit which I presume I’ll need for the Heartgard? I would also like to put her on some kind of glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM and if need be a NASID. Also maybe a senior bloodwork panel (which isn’t critical-she is 11!)

I’ll need to run out and get her some dog food today since I don’t have any. She had rice, chicken and pumpkin this morning. I’d like to keep her on the kibble (with goodie toppings) since that’s more cost-effective and probably what she’s used to. BTW what is your recommendation for kibble? In the past, I used Fromms, Zignature, Blue, Honest Kitchen and Stella&Chewy but those are expensive so a cheaper (but NO crap) would be fine because of the foods I add.

I finally talked to my handyman! and he will be by to check about my fence. I’ll also need him to, maybe, put in a ramp for my back patio. Lilly went down the TWO steps but refused to go back up (open steps)! So we walked around to the front to get back in🙄. It’s all cool though. Depending on what Mark says, I could do without the ramp since she prefers the walks over anything.

So let me know. I’m really so happy she’s here and can’t wait for that beautiful LONG tail to pop up! James is a doll! He said “no one in their right mind would fly with me” Hahahaha-loved it

Thanks for everything, Jackie, I’ll spoil Lilly rotten!

I will monitor our transport and will be available on Saturday in case of questions, unexpected delays, or problems. You can reach me on my cell phone, 1-901-438-5782 (call/text). Calls, texts, pics, and updates are most welcome! (I will also be traveling tomorrow, so if you are unable to reach me, please contact Christina Prange 1-919-605-4563.

Because of your kindness Maddox will go to his new home this weekend. We appreciate you so much for donating your time and travel expense to make Maddox’s trip possible. You are all very special friends to our ARG rescue dogs and we are most grateful!
Maddox is 6 years old and fully vetted. He is a handsome, wonderful, healthy, heart worm negative Airedale. He never quite relaxes while riding, though, and he’ll pant a lot and be restless, but he won’t get sick. His mom is giving him a couple of 25 mg Benadryl when they leave and will bring extras for him if needed later in the day. He will be wearing a leather buckle collar and a gentle leader with leash. Please bring an extra leash so that you have two points of connection and two leashes on him at all times. (Remember to get your own leash back!)

Safety and Security – These are always big concerns during a transport. Please check that Maddoxs’s collar is fastened securely and that his leash is attached and intact before exiting your vehicle. Be sure that you have a good hold on his leash when you open your car door, use care when walking him, and hold on tight! Also, try to choose the quietest possible spot at your hand off location, away from traffic. Do not let him off leash at any time!!
Loading and Handoffs – Maddox should load up easily. If he hesitates please show him what you’d like for him to do by putting his front paws into the vehicle and giving him a boost up. Please give him a few minutes to meet and get to know his new driver before loading him into the next vehicle.
Traveling – Once you’re underway he should ride quietly and will likely snooze most of the way. Since he won’t be traveling with a crate it is essential that you tether him securely by his leash. Close the car door on the end of his leash with a few inches outside the door. That way, you already have a hand on the leash when you open the door. We want to be sure that he doesn’t try to help with the driving or try to run. Though this will be a confusing time for Maddox we know that your care will make his trip the best it can possibly be.
Please be sure that your contact info below is correct and check in with the people you’re meeting on either end of your leg to confirm meeting times and locations. Call me if you need any additional info while on the road!
Meeting locations are suggestions: If you and the person you’re meeting decide on an alternate meeting spot that’s more convenient, that’s fine. Just let me know, please.
Below is our transport schedule which includes all the information you’ll need to complete your part of Maddox’s trip:

09/29/19: Barbara Bonfield will be the permanent foster mom of Lilly. Lilly is traveling from Huntsville, AL (thank you Craig & Chris Lincoln) via Pilots N Paws pilot Cliff Mead to Macon GA, where our own James Kleen will take her on to Ocala FL.

Thank you for the update. I was really concerned they might not be thorough in her future placement and might allow someone who shouldn’t have Bella take her. So glad she is going to be safe because I know Airedale Rescue thoroughly vets….you are all wonderful!

I’ve spoken to the woman, Renee, who has her mom’s 7-y-o Airedale, Bella, and she is going to submit a Relinquishment form. Bella is not in any danger and there’s no rush; it’s just not a good living arrangement with Renee’s 2 pit bulls and Rottweiler. Thank you, all, for getting this to ARG.

Renee had consulted National’s site and we are not listed, as you know.

                                Thank you.

Hi Sidney and Dot….we no longer live in New Mexico, but remember how helpful you were in rescuing Airedales. We have tried to find a rescue group here to alert them to this sweet Dale, but our emails come back to us. We are hoping you might be able to forward this info to a rescue group in our area.

                                Good morning,
The information below appeared on our Waterford, Leland, NC General Message Board. There are pictures of this Dale there as well…I am very concerned for the welfare of this senior Dale as she looks very sad…terrible hair cut too and a bit overweight. I would go get her, but we have a 10 year old Airedale who does not get along with any other female dogs. Just wanted to make you aware of this Dale. Info below.
                                Thanks,
                                Angie Erler

I am not the owner and am forwarding information on “Bella”, an Airedale Terrier looking for a new loving home. Located in Fayetteville, NC. You will need to TEXT the owner and she will respond. PLEASE DO NOT CALL. TEXT ONLY for the initial contact. Text RENEE 618.967.9434

Owner has new job that requires travel and can no longer care for the dog. Daughter RENEE is caring for Bella but already has two other dogs. The following information has been provided by Renee: Purebred female, 7 years old, house broken, neutered, shots up-to-date, no health issues, went thru training program with Extreme Canine. Social, likes dogs, cats and kids. Laid back, sweet and affectionate.
