HOME EVALUATION FORM
To the Home Evaluator: This form can be used when doing a home visit to evaluate a potential family for a rescued Airedale. Adoption or foster applicants you are visiting have already met preliminary criteria by having their Adoption Application accepted and have passed the telephone interview.
When doing a home visit, please attempt to get as much information as asked for on this form. Ask questions, where appropriate, and get as many details as you can about the home environment. Some of the questions on this form may not apply to this home so use your own judgment.
If possible, bring a friend or another rescue volunteer with you on the home visit. This helps both for the purpose of having another pair of eyes and ears to assist you in making a complete evaluation and for your own personal safety.

Interior trashed/dirtyDescribe the home interior:
The Beach’s home is beautiful and decorated appropriately. The couches are leather to help with clean up of pet fur or pet accidents. They have hardwood floors but have rugs throughout the living room and hallway. The bedrooms are carpeted.Accommodations:
When the dog is left alone in the home the dog will have the freedom to roam the house. There were not crates but Pat mentioned if the dog adopted has been crate train then she will consider a crate if the dog feels the crate as their safe place. She said she would then keep the crate in their bedroom. There are multiple dog beds throughout the home for a dog to use when sleep since much of the floors are hardwood. Even though there are stairs, the Beach’s have an elevator to use when the dog gets older or begins to have hip problems. The elevator goes from the garage to the top floor. Pat mentioned the dogs would never be kept in the garage or outside. She feels that pets are family and leaving them in a garage or unattended is not giving them the best care.Children:
Pat do not have any children living in their home. Their children are all grown and live out of town. Pat did mention she has two grandchildren but she teaches them how to behave around the pets. The grandchildren also have children in their homes so they are also taught how to be respectful towards pets.Family Environment:
The environment is quite and laid-back. The Beach’s are retired and can have a schedule that is accommodating for their pets.Life-Style Compromises:
Pat and Michael have been long-time pet owners. The have consistently thought about their pets when making decisions. During a move to South Carolina they had pets and kept their pets through the move. When they travel, they consider their pets and many times instead of flying they will drive so they dog can travel with them. They have also hired pet sitters for their two cats and in instances when their dog would stay home instead of ravel with them. Pat has even considered when they may be away for an extended amount during the day she arranges for a walker (Vanessa) or asks a neighbor whom she trusts. She has mentioned several neighbors that she can rely on to take their dog out if her and her husband get stuck somewhere and would be gone longer than expected.
Other Pets:
The Beach’s have two cats, Joplin (female) age approximately 9 years and Grayson (male) approximately 4 years. They have a dog named Lucky (male) who is 13 years. All pets appear to be healthy and well-cared for. They use flea preventative measures for all pets. Even though the cats are indoor-only cats they also are given flea-preventative. All pets were well-behaved. Lucky is a certified therapy dog and you can tell by the commands Pat gives him, Pat took the time to also train him.Owner Interaction with Other Pets:
o Describe the relationship all family members seem to have to other pets. They are loving and claim their pets as family members.
o What role will the dog play in applicant’s life? The dog will become part of the family like the other pets.
o Are the other pets treated like family members? yes
o How do the other animals behave? Well behaved and trained
o If applicant is looking for an additional dog, or cat why does applicant what another? Pat would like another big dog and while they are still young enough to put in the time to train, they would like to adopt now and not wait.
o Does applicant believe that the new dog will “train” old dog or vice versa? No
o Has applicant ever owned more than one dog or cat at the same time? Yes
o Is applicant prepared for the increased work, expense [including vet cost], and commotion? Yes
o How committed is adopter? I would say very committed. I stayed nearly two hours talking with the Beach’s and they had shown me around the island of various places where their new dog would play and walk.
o What are the owner’s responses to behaviors good and bad? They feel pet owners should be responsible pet owners and take the time to train their dogs.
o Do owners demand perfection or have unreasonable expectation regarding behaviors? No
o Do other dogs in the home obey happily? Yes
o Are the other dogs out of control and undisciplined? No
o Do the owners appear to know some basic training techniques? Yes
o How do the animals react to the owner’s response? The pets obey commands without fear or trembling.
Important Question to Answer:
o Explain that re-homing a dog is stressful for the dog.
o That often the rescued dog they want to adopt or foster may have training accidents, even if they are housebroken, while they are in their new home or foster care, for the first few weeks.
o Ask the applicant what they would do or how they would react to the new dog having an accident. What was their reply?
Pat understands there is a time period of adjustment for a new dog.Additional Information:
o Please describe any additional information about the home environment that you feel is pertinent.
o Is there anything in general or specifically that would cause you to feel uncomfortable about placing a dog or cat in this home?
o If so, what?
o “Gut feelings” are considered important. Would you feel comfortable leaving your own dog with the applicant?
o Explain.
Yes, I would be comfortable leaving my dog with them. Pat and Michael have owned pets throughout their lives and treat their pets like family. We have very similar perspectives when it comes to caring for a pet. Through our conversation we spoke about the hurricanes we’ve had for the past several years and she mentioned she doesn’t understand how someone could leave a pet behind as some of the residents have where she lives. She believes pets should be taken with you during evacuations as they are a part of the family. She has even shown me where she had a bag specifically made for a litter box so she can carry it like a bag, and it can travel with them if they have to evacuate. She has it ready to go during hurricane season for her cats. Pat and Michael are pet people and love on their pets as family members. I approve of them being chosen to adopt a dog from your rescue organization.
Conclusion:X—Approve Applicant

________________________________________Additional Suggestions to The Home Evaluator:
• If you need to take notes during the visit, please do so discreetly on a small note pad, rather than on this form. It is preferred that the applicants feel at ease with you and to be themselves. Complete this form after the visit is over, when you are not in the presence of the applicants.
• Qualities to note are sincerity, commitment, tolerance of normal animal behavior, honest representation of the home environment, children’s behavior with other pets, and expected role of the children in pet care. Obtain explanations about the absence of any family members during the visit. Feel free to ask leading questions to begin productive conversation. Often good conversation will reveal far more than questions.
• Do not make any promises to the applicants or indicate whether they will be approved to adopt or foster. Please refrain from discussing any animal presently in rescue that may become available for adoption.

10/10/19: The Slenkers want Bella-Jo… NOW! They can meet someone this weekend to get her. However, Renee is on vacay in FL and won’t be back until Sunday eve, the 13th. She was willing to drive to Columbia on Tuesday morning the 15th to meet someone, and I told Shawn/Julie that. Shawn countered with he would drive to Fayetteville Saturday, stay overnight, and pick up Bella-Jo Sunday morning and take her home.
Renee has agreed to this, though she is sad that she will not get to say goodbye. Her dog-sitter will be at her home.
Bella has a regular collar and leash, has never tried to get away or bolt after anything or out a door. She rides well in the car.
Renee is going to connect me to her dog-sitter and I’ll connect us and Shawn.
10/10/19: Offered Bella Jo to the Rokicki’s but they have declined because they really want a male.
Now offered to The Slenkers!
But, still waiting for med records from Renee. I called the vet’s office but they won’t release them.

Hi Jackie,
Hope you are well. We filled out adoption paperwork and got cleared last year. I saw your FB post about Bella Jo. Our family is interested in adoption.
We previously resided in SC, but as you may recall we are in Asheville, NC now. We already have a Goldendoodle, Bo, who will be two in Jan. He is very sweet, affectionate and also loves people. He plays well with other dogs.
Look forward to hearing from you about next steps?
(Just realized how cute Bo and Bella sounds.)

I was thinking of you and thought I remembered a message from you recently. Well, this was way back in June, so not really recent! Anyway, I obviously never got back to you tomorrow! Maggie is – from all reports – doing great with her family in VA. They have continued to communicate with Cindy Green who gives them tips when issues come up, but they love her and she is comfortable and calm now. How’s that little Golden pup? Growing like a week, I’ll bet! Otherwise, hope all is well with you. Let me know if you decide you want a big fuzzy dog.
That’s good to hear about Maggie, we felt so bad about the situation. Gabby and I are doing well, she is my best friend and gives me lots of comfort yes, I still look at your Airedale’s !
10/09/19: That is great news, Paige! Thank you so much!

Hi, Paige.
I have copied Scott & Lois Romahn, the folks who want Dexter. They can come Wednesday. As they’ll be driving from Clemmons, NC to Atlanta on I-85, it will take 5 to 5-1/2 hours, so they could arrive by early afternoon, say 1:00 – 1:30. Is there any chance you could meet them up I-85 a bit, say away from most of the Atlanta traffic? Maybe there’s a park where you could meet?
Please reply all to let us know. We are so happy that you are willing to trust Airedale Rescue Group to find Dexter the right home!
Thank you!

Hey Jackie,
That sounds like a great fit. I love that they said they would take on a devil dog – lol! We are available to meet any day of the week, but weekdays are easier. Since we run our own business morning meetings are not a problem!
Thank you for all that you do,

Hi, Joey & Paige. We have more than 30 approved adopters waiting for Airedales, or I should say, for specific Airedales. Ruling out those who are gone 8-10 hours a day, those with cats, those with toddlers living in the same house, those without Airedale experience, those who want an older Airedales, a settled Airedale, a tiny Airedale!, not a high-energy Airedale, a female only, etc., I have a few good people, none of whom are in the Atlanta area!
My first choice is a family in Clemmons, NC, who are ADT experienced, currently have two small terriers, are home all the time because they’re retired and healthy: (they heat their home with firewood and do all the work on the farm with 5 horses themselves!), a half acre fenced area (separate from the horses), and replied with this when asked what kind of temperament would best suit their household:
What kind of temperament would best suit your household? Check all that apply.
a. Energetic, always on the go , b. Sweet and cuddly , d. Loves to walk, run or hike, e. Devil dog – needs constant watching or will chew the house down , f. Protector of the house – barks loud , g. Patient and tolerant of kids , h. Able to be one of several animals in our home or in our friend’s homes. They have two grandchildren 6 and 3 who visit a couple times a year and are working with the older one on agility training with his dog!
I will see how soon they can come meet him!

Hi Jackie & Barbara,
I met with Jenn and her son last evening for their home visit. They are both very nice and inviting. The son was very quiet and didn’t have much to say. I will try to list out my thoughts below as it will otherwise be a hard read.
She was honest about her living situation.
House was very clean and it seemed everything had its place. Well-kept.
New furniture and carpeting and tile.
I asked about crate training and she really couldn’t answer me. Her intent, I think, was to leave the dog out in the house. (“Would like to build a fenced run for them when she purchases a house”).
Dog will stay inside.
Small yard and no fencing. But a good neighborhood to walk the dog.
Semi Urban area with major road nearby.
Asked about vacation and she would have family or boarding.
Inquired about grooming. Her ex takes the dog to a groomer in Locust Grove, GA called Bethlehem Vet? I am not familiar with them but I have yet to find anyone that can groom mine around here.
Specifically asked if they are considered dogs or family members, response was, “family”.
I explained that it may take 4 weeks or over a year for a dog to begin to trust and acclimate to new surroundings as they have different backgrounds and with that they can have baggage to overcome. Patience and consistency are a must!
Her ex husband is a breeder Frankenfaustairedales and also authored a book (this I found out while researching his kennel https://www.authorhouse.com/BookStore/BookDetails/283351-The-American-Sporting-Airedale
She is adamant about a 1-2 year old and her fear is an older dog is less likely to be integrated easily into their lifestyle and family. I tried to explain all dogs are different and come from different backgrounds.
Background discussion. She kept speaking of her ex’s kennel. As we know, within the breed all dogs are individuals.I explained thoroughly using my two as examples.
She is familiar with the breed but seems very green to dog handling and as the primary responsible party.
She spoke of finding the right dog and I think that is the key.
She wasn’t aware there was an adoption fee.
In conclusion, I think she would be a good candidate. I think she may have a learning curve with regards to being firm and the alpha of the house. I feel she is genuine but I have reservations about her not really having experience with a dog that was hers. I have not doubt she would love one. Overall, I would allow her to keep Jackson but not Ellie. I also offered to be a resource with any help or questions. She lives about 30 minutes away.If you have any questions let me know!
Thanks,
GaryI will notify Jennifer Jarman that she is approved for the right Airedale. I have my doubts about her. I would not put a very young, untrained Airedale with her.
10/09/19: Emailed Linda to see if she’d do a HV in Hendersonville for Cathy Agee.
