We do not leave Cooper alone much. The most is 2-4 hours if out for errands, friends etc. She’s home by 3:30 or so. Pharm sales.
Cooper is our 3rd dale. They’re working with a trainer, had to live in apartment and she’s working with a trainer. All positive training. Jackie. She’s a great trainer. Cooper is a very good dog and they got him and had a senior dog. He’s been great. Moved a lot and he just goes along.
Ranger was our first as a puppy, Toby was our rescue from Atra and Cooper we got as a puppy.
Do you or do other caregivers have any physical limitations that would make it difficult or impossible to run after a loose dog or pick up a 50-70 pound dog?
Explain.: No we have done it all with our Airedales in past. I have learned to read them well to keep them from escaping. Her mom & dad had Welshies, one was an escape artist. Make sure gates/doors are closed. She uses baby gates throughout the house. She’s very cautious. In fenced yard they have just one gate and it has a lock.
I asked about the construction in their neighborhood (seen on google maps). Her street is done. They’re working on houses behind them. Her block is complete and behind her is complete. It doesn’t bother Cooper.
A typical workday: Cooper either has run of house, he likes to sit and watch out the window while Dad/our son works. Also lunchtime short walk. We understand that the new dog would need to be worked with to get to that point. We would crate train for nights. Cooper goes for at least one walk a day She is usually the one who takes Cooper to walk. Early a.m. As weather cools should be longer walks. We would do same with new pup. New pup would be in crate while we are not at home until trained to be able to be out. We do have a heavy gate that we put up to keep Cooper out of front and upstairs bonus room when not home. I also train Cooper with a great trainer working up to doing agility. Going to try to get Cooper in agility. Cooper doesn’t use the crate anymore. (She’ll send the name of the trainer!)

Overall, the Sextons are quite experienced with Airedales, having adopted from Paula Lackner with ATRA 15 years ago. They are knowledgeable about Airedales’ flight risk, independence, and loving natures.

They will be great adopters and volunteers. She has helped transport several times for ATRA.

We just need a home visit!
      ____________

Spoke to Julie at Indian Lake Vet’s. She’ll get in touch with the Sextons and call me back.

This is helpful! I want to jump through hoops if Jiggs is truly in need of a home. I love that he is a puppy and still training. We had to keep Tucker on a leash for 3 weeks when he showed up to get him acclimated to the chickens. Mind you, we only have 7 chickens and we can keep them in the run / coop.

Let’s start with a few videos. I will go door to door through the house. Through the farm. Through the big barns. And also, at my personal office, where the Airedale would be with me most of the time during the week.

As always, I am OK pulling back the reigns if you feel that is better. I just don’t want to miss an adoption opportunity with such a spirited Airedale.

Thank you for your guidance Jackie. This is all new to me, but super exciting! Let me know your thoughts.

I told him to go ahead with the video.

In response to Derek’s text asking about home visit:

Hi, Derek. We look for anything that could be a danger to an Airedale: Objects in the house or yard that could injure the animal — rakes, long extension cords, dangerous/toxic cleaning materials or pesticides/herbicides within reach, medications within dog’s reach, children’s toys that could be ingested, standing water, scrap metal not properly stored, missing fence material, holes in/under fences, etc.
            It’s certainly not a “white-glove” exam.
The most important considerations are whether all of the family are in favor of the dog, are they capable of providing the best care — food, vet care, preventative care, physical & mental stimulation — and their care of and for their other animals.

Right now my biggest concern for your family is how any Airedale would be with your cats, indoor and outdoor, and your chickens.

In lieu of a home visit, we will accept a video tour of your home inside and out, anywhere your Airedale will be allowed or have easy access to.

Also, have you begun construction on your new home? Your ‘dale would need to stay away from the construction site.

Let me know what you think, Derek.

Derek was on hold because (1) his Tucker was heartworm positive and had to get treated; (2) Corrie Anderson would not visit unless everyone in his home wore a mask. Initially, his wife would not, so we canceled and decided to wait until August or so for the HV.

Emailed Derek to make sure he hasn’t gotten another dog and depending on his response I will contact Corrie to see if she will do the HV w/o a mask.

Per Christina, they want a middle-aged dog, not a youngster.

I called and emailed Brock re Jiggs and followed that with a text asking if he was still interested in adopting. He said he was but he had changed jobs. I followed asking how long the dog would be alone during the day. Crickets.

I’m not going to expend a lot of energy on Brock. He won’t respond.

Nancy Harr will foster Jiggs (thank you, Christina!). She and her husband Paul have a huge house, 7000 SF, and the bottom floor is about 2600 SF and the dogs can run around down there as much as they want. They do NOT have a fenced yard but they have 6 acres where they walk their 2 dales on leash all the time. Male 4 years old, female 11 years old and still feisty. The male is quite partial to her husband, Paul. She hopes they all will get along, but if they don’t, we’ll find another place. I don’t particularly want Jiggs going back to Loretta’s boarding.

Loretta Cloyd is very nice, but she works away from home 4-1/2 days a week and only goes home at lunch to care for her dogs, cats and boarders.

Wendy Nelson is thinking about it.
Rita Heckrotte would need to have her female Airedales meet him first.

Kevin & Chris Maclean cannot foster right now.
                            Hi Jackie

Thanks for all the info and looks like he will probably gonna wind up being a good dog when he gets in the right place which I’m sure he will. Chris and I talked extensively about the dog and I’m sorry to say we’re gonna take a pass on fostering him this last foster was good but it had some issues that we’re gonna need to work on First.
I feel bad turning down any dog situation to be honest with you. I’m happy to help with transportation if he’s coming back through Tennessee from Bristol.

                            Best

                            Kevin

Also spoke to Rita Heckrotte who is interested and sent her info as well.

Talked to Rita Heckrotte and sent her the video of Jiggs. She’s inclined to want to foster but would have to meet him first with her 2 female dales, one of whom is a bully. She asked how long they would have to foster and I told her it could be a month.

Spoke to Jim Roxlo, Rita’s husband, re Jiggs. He doubts they will foster bc they have 2 older Airedales and one is a real bully and probably would not tolerate another male dog. But he’ll talk to Rita and call back.
