          01/29/2020: From Jennie Latimer:
“Jackie, update on “Took” (new name). Vet visit today. Surgery site looks good. Bad tooth was discovered and infection has affected the bone. He will need surgery in the next few weeks. Hate it for him but I think his appetite will improve. Vet says Took should weight around 65 lbs. We are working on the aggressive behavior. Realize it will be a lengthy process. Took is doing great in our house. Sleeps on the Cooleroo bed at the foot of ours. Have not used crate but have left him for an hour without any problems Lots of love and exercise! I did want to share that our vet found evidence of multiple wounds (bite evidence) on Took. Will know more after grooming. No effects from radius fracture. This poor guy had a complicated start! We hope to provide a good home. Jennie.”

I responded to her via email and text and we are to speak on 01/30/2020.

01/28/2020 Since the above post in early December, I’ve been trying to get Sue to contact a trainer. I’ve sent her a list of certified professional trainers in her area. She sent me info on another trainer who I googled and declined; he uses electronic collars to train. I told her about Joey and connected them via text, but she never called him and he never called her. After one other incident (at least), I insisted that she call him and she did and he texted her his rates. She talked to him about what she was doing with Banjo and the noise collar and he said to use that inside too when he’s doing something she doesn’t want him to do – barking at people or dogs outside, etc.

She sent me the rates for Joey $3000 for behavior modification program 6 weeks; or 8 obedience lessons for $1300. then she told me she’s working with the stop command and the noise collar and he’s doing great. She had a neighbor come over and was able to control Banjo that way and she would continue to work on it.

01/27/2020 She sent me a text to call her. The previous night she and Banjo were sitting on the couch just watching tv, he was calm. Jeff came into the room and walked over and rubbed Banjo on the side of the face and Banjo “went off” on him. Jeff had to grab him by the neck with both hands and Sue grabbed his collar and they were literally holding him up off the couch. They got him to the bedroom and closed him in there. She went back in a few minutes later and said Banjo was looking dazed. She just left him in there. Before they went to bed, she put Banjo in her office rather than letting him sleep in their room. Sometimes when she’s already in bed and Banjo is beside the bed, when Jeff comes in, he growls at him. He did get Jeff; broke the skin on his arm. Banjo has only his 2 top canines and 4 back molars. Sue admitted to me that she’s afraid of him and that he’s unpredictable. This is apparently the 4th time he’s done this. The rest of the time he’s a sweetheart and loves her and is smart and they love him. She vacillates in every call we’ve had between I love him and he should stay with us because we understand him and I can’t keep him because he’s going to be too expensive when he gets older.

I have let this go on too far. I called Joey yesterday and the said from his 2 conversations and texts with Sue, she is whacko and rude. She hung up on him once. He intuits that she is not consistent with Banjo and doesn’t think there’s really anything wrong, he’s just being protective. Joey said he sounds unstable and unpredictable. And he could try to work with him and ARG could spend a lot of money on him but how many Airedales could we rescue with that same money?

I asked Joey if he would pick up Banjo and take him to be euthanized. He will. He understands that the vet at Crabapple Knoll will not even treat him unless he has been sedated with ace promazine and trazadone for 1 hour before he comes in MUZZLED. We agreed that I will tell Sue that Joey is going to take him to evaluate him and work with him to get him to the point that he will be safe.

When I talked to Sue this morning (the 28th) she started back-pedaling and saying that he’s been really good and they’ve got a system worked out and she doesn’t want to let him go. I told her I had made the decision that Joey would come get him, yada, yada, yada. She said she would take him to Joey but couldn’t until Friday after 11:30. I told her that was too late. She could take him tomorrow (Wed) after 5:00. I would prefer for Joey to come get him and she can put Banjo in Joey’s crate because he doesn’t know Joey.

I’ve texted Joey to tell him we’re ready.

                            01/24/2020: From Cathy Biersack
                            Hi Cathy,

A perfect home, somewhere on my street so I could still see them everyday, but not have to juggle four dogs. 🙂

                            But seriously…
Lyla pulls, but not to the point where she takes me off my feet or makes me run. Just always at the end of the leash and tugging. She is much better when on a easy harness/no-pull harness but I don’t use it very often because I often have two dogs on a double dog leash and it gets tangled with the easy harness.

Walker – Baxter prefers to go for walks to do his business, but likes to go outside and sits on the deck. Lyla prefers to go out in the yard to do her business and she LOVES going outside. Every time the door opens, she wants to go outside just to look around. I walk them about 5 miles a day. They will be going on a long hike in Shenandoah on Friday, 7-10 miles (weather permitting).

Large yard – not a must have if they are walked but any size yard would be a nice to have. Like I said, they like to be outside.

While they are not active during the day other than our walks (they are master nappers) – I just can’t imagine them in crates all day. I also can’t imagine them in a condo/apartment as they bark at every sudden noise.

Must be allowed on furniture. Neither have made any attempt at sleeping in the bed, though they will sometimes get up for a cuddle. Baxter sleeps in a dog bed in the bedroom but Lyla still sleeps upstairs on the couch.

Baxter is really on a food schedule – and gets “destructive” if his human does not feed him on time/according to his routine. Once I went to the store at 5pm and got home 10 minutes after dinner time and all of the kindling for the fireplace was strewn around the room. Next, I didn’t feed them in the morning after they went outside (because it was 3am, not their breakfast time) and he went counter surfing to find his food and knocked some stuff on the floor. Nothing major – but I realize how much of a schedule/routine he is on.

Neither are food aggressive and are learning to take their treats “nicely” instead of grabby.

We took Baxter (and Jameson) to Barrel Oak Winery last Sunday and Baxter was a perfect gentleman with the crowd of people, other dogs, and children. He’s also very good in the car.

We are going to miss them!

01/24/2020: Sent this email to all the above folks as blind cc:

We know you’ve been waiting for an Airedale for a long time. ARG has had only a couple of Airedales since October and they were special cases that went to previous adopters who could provide for their needs.

One of our sister Airedale rescue organizations, Airedale Terrier Rescue of the Virginias (ATRVA) has provided this information to ARG in the hopes that we have someone who might be interested in adopting this pair of dogs — one Airedale, one white golden-poodle mix. I’ve pasted in the information ATRVA provided to us:

Lila (golden-poodle, 55 lbs) and Baxter (Airedale, 70 lb) are doing great. They are quite comfortable here and fit in perfectly. Someone is going to be very lucky to get these two!
We took them on a 6 mile hike on Sunday in Bull Run. They met several other dogs on the trail and were very well behaved.
The only warning is they bark at everything, though far less than when they first got here.

                              From the foster parents:
I have to say, Lila and Baxter are absolutely the sweetest dogs. While we carefully (emotionally) considered keeping them, four dogs are a lot of work and in the end we can’t keep the fosters furever (through NO fault of the pups). Honestly, I waffle because they are both so even tempered and fit in with our mellow boys. They will make a lucky family very happy!!!
Lila = cuddle bug/daddy’s girl. Love, love, love her!!!! She is so sweet and loves getting pet. A bit of a puller on walks but is great with a gentle lead collar. She is a treat stealer but when fed, she and Baxter go back and forth between bowls. She is a protector… when Baxter and Jameson play and start to get feisty (growly) she jumps in to protect her brother Baxter ( not aggressively, through barking and getting between them). Oh, and when she starts to bark, i.e. someone coming to the front door, it takes some time before she’ll stop.
Baxter the protector – back story, my dog’s are the silent type. Baxter is a talker. Dinner time, he paws the food bucket then turns and “growls” at us. It is his “I’m hungry” speech. When he wants to play (and he loves toys), he’ll brings a toy over, “growls”, then “Gives”, and fetches when thrown. He LOVES this game. He is very protective but has never nipped (has met a couple strangers), growls/ barks then licks. His growls, while sound scary/mean, are absolutely harmless (so far with us, our dogs, and 3 strangers meeting him). He does love to cuddle and is very obedient on walks.
Christmas day (only 4 days after getting them) we left them alone/ uncrated for 4 hours and zero issues (potty or destruction
From a destruction stand point, neither of our dogs destroy toys, to the point I stopped Barkbox because we have a over 30 toys for two dogs. These two have destroyed three toys so far… they love to find the squeakers!!! But statistically speaking, three toys in five days with access to 30 is nothing! 🙂
We have not introduced them to other dogs. Side note, neither dogs react to gun fire noise (NOT us, #boondock living).
At night, so far, they both stick to the upstairs and won’t come down/ stay in the bedroom (even when we bring their blankets down).
That’s all I have for now. We will miss the heck out of them when they find their furever home!

                              12/22/19 First day in foster…
                              Good with Charlie and Jameson.
Walks- Lila is a bit of a puller on walks while Baxter is good to stay right next to me.
Food – no food aggression at all. Baxter prefers soft treats to hard treats.
First night – they both slept upstairs on the couch and dog bed. They were barky when the heater kicked in, but eventually got over it
Baxter – gets growly if approached from behind. And growls when playing, but that is 100% for fun.
Lila – when she starts to bark she is reluctant to stop.
Both are both cuddly and good finding their own place to sleep.

If you are interested in learning more about this bonded pair, please let me know. ARG will work with ATRVA on the transport.

Subject: Transport of Duke Friday, January 24, 2020

PLEASE REPLY ALL TO THIS EMAIL SO I KNOW YOU ALL HAVE RECEIVED IT!

Thank you for your help getting Duke, a 2-year-old, just-neutered Airedale, from the vet’s where he has been kenneled this week to his new home with Jennie & Tom Latimer. Duke will be traveling with his own collar and leash, a little of the food he’s been eating at the vet’s to transition him to his new food, his medical records, and his bed provided by his original owner.  ( Karen, please make certain the vet’s office gives you all of this.)

Keep in mind that although Duke loves riding in the car, he has been kenneled for 1 week and now he’s on a road trip with new folks. He’s likely to be confused. Consider him a FLIGHT RISK. Please make certain his collar fits tightly (just 1 finger can fit under it) and that he cannot back out of it. Double collar and leash him; bring an extra collar and leash of your own just in case.

Secure Duke in the vehicle with either a seat belt or by closing the end of the leash in the car door so that before you even open his door, you have a hand on the leash.

Bring a water bowl and water to allow Odie to have a drink at transfer points.

I’ve chosen meeting places that should be easy on/easy off the interstate; however, if you know of a better location, please communicate to the person you’re meeting to guide them. Hotels, Cracker Barrels, McD’s, etc. are good places to meet because they typically have green space and plenty of parking and you can keep well away from the roadway.

                                  01/23/2020: Hi Jackie–
I am working on Fridays except this Friday Bill has a doctors appointment so I could not do it for two reasons.  But would be glad to help out when I can.
Drizele is doing very well.  We feel very lucky to have her.  We are putting eye drops in every night for “dry” eyes but other than that her health is good.  She’s active, fits in with our life style well.  She was friendly with our son’s dog when we took her with us to visit.  She is really interested in any food close by so we have to watch her closely and protect food but we are working on rewarding “down” behavior near the table.  She is not a counter surfer though.  I feel really lucky about that. She learned “go to bed” very quickly because of regular rewards.  We got her adjusted to regular dog food finally.  Went through mixing cooked chicken with it, then chicken stock.  I was going to stop there but tried water with it and she’s done fine.  Healthy appetite now.   All in all I can’t imagine anyone giving her up but am very glad they did.
We’ll be glad to help in the future.
                                                                    Warmly—   Barbara
