03/09/2020: I spoke to Gwen for nearly an hour and could have talked longer because she is knowledgeable about dogs and interesting. She lives in Indiana from November through mid-March, then Tennessee the rest of the year. She has 8 acres of wooded property in Pleasant View TN, 40 min north of Nashville and is building her house – it’s still under construction, but all the studs are up and some walls. Gwen lives alone with her Airedale. She has 2 sisters nearby — on in Gallatin and one in Mt. Juliet; a son in Atlanta.

She has an 11-mo-old female Airedale, Saylor, who she has trained very well. Saylor has excellent recall — about 90% unless she sees a dog. Ha. 80% if out in public. She says that Saylor went after a herd of deer once, but Barbara called her back and she came!!! The next time they encountered the herd of deer, Saylor just fronted them and they ran away and she didn’t give chase, but came right back to Gwen’s side. She takes Saylor to the dog park in IN and she plays well with every one of them. Gwen used to do obedience and agility and she was a human psychologist. She likes working with training methods and gave me 2 FB pages she follows and likes.

Her 8 acres are wooded and she fenced off a large portion – she estimates 5000 sq ft – with farm wiring 4 x 4 wire squares that she secured to mature trees. She walks from the house through the garage to the fenced area. After she fences all of it, she will have a door that exits into the fenced area.

Although she said she want a dog tolerant of kids, she has no regular child visitors. She has 2 great nieces 8, 12, in Atlanta who visit a couple of times a year.

They live on a creek and Saylor will run through it but hasn’t learned the joys of playing in the water.

Gwen is looking only to foster, transport, or help in another way during the time she’s in TN.

        Find a home visit.

          JMC Response to Cindy’s email:

That is an unusual request, Cindy. Dash and the GD fight over everything, inside and outside. The latest incident the mom related to me was she was drying the GD’s paws after it came in from outside and Dash came into the room and just went for the GD. She had to separate them. I don’t want to ask the mom to try to video them together when she’s doing all she can to keep them separated.

Thanks so much – hoping this works out. Love to know they have rescued before with y’all.

Dash is crated when you are away from home. Is that because she and your golden-doodle will fight; or is it because she might chew or destroy things?
Afraid she will chew but we haven’t really tested that. She just enjoys her crate so that’s always been the easy thing to do with her.

Dash sometimes gets car-sick. How often does she ride in the car and for how long/what distances? Does she get sick just riding for short distances?
She has a hard time settling down in the car. We haven’t tried long distances. Short car rides seem to be fine. Honestly we live on a mtn and curvy roads and it could be that makes her car sick. She just seems to be nauseous on the curvy roads. The farthest she’s been is around 45 minutes. She hasn’t thrown up lately in the car.
Dash has “run away” when off-leash. Do you think she would try to jump a 4-ft tall fence?
Not at all!! We have a fence and she’s never tried that.

Please let me know if there is anything else they need!!

The couple who are interested are experienced Airedale owners who have adopted from us previously, but their last Airedale died last year.

Barb and Mort will be so sad but I will let them know. I’m on my way to Durham in a few minutes to take down the signs. I am glad to transport all or part of the way – just depends on what day it is. He may want to keep Leo until his next trip to care for his Mom. Just let me know. I understand his situation as I spent two years doing it until I insisted Mom move here!

Suzanne, Pat is supposed to hear from one of our approved adopters this evening or tomorrow. I can’t remember which yet. She will have priority. But please have your friend send in an application and unless she says she cooks Airedales on the grill, we can probably approve her quickly. Gotta follow process. App, interview, vet check, home visit (you’ve already done that!), then match.

Here you go! Let me know if you have any other questions

Dash was on Apoquel from November 2016 to April 2018. Did her itchiness/scratching go away? My Hawkeye was on Apoquel for quite a while also, but we switched to Cytopoint and that’s working well.

Her itchiness has subsided and she hasn’t been on Apoquel for almost 1.5 years

Has the lump on her knee/leg changed since November?

                                No

Does she ever limp or show lameness since August of 2019? Has she been on Deramax since then?

No incidence of lameness since then

Thank you so much. Y’all are making this process so much easier for us.

03/04/2020: Rec’d medical records on Dash from Riverview Animal Hospital, Chattanooga.
Dash was treated with Apoquel from the time she was 5 months old, until 2 years old. 11-25-16 to 04-12-18. Find out what changed.

At age 5 mos, seen at vet for limp/lame; again at 6 mos.

Dental cleaning 01-25-19; stick found stuck btw 2 teeth (Owners had noted face twitch)

11-25-19 Lump noted on craniomedial left stifle 2-3 mm, purple; not super concerning, though color is concerning. Owner opted to simply monitor rather than bx, cryo.

Vet recommended they take her off grain-free food.
Alkaline phosphatase off the charts low. 13 (normal 23-212)

On Deramax from 12-19-16-owner says limping 3-4 weeks (vet says leg looks strange, shoulder pain), 01-02-17 (vet suspects HOD-hypertrophic osteodystrophy), 08-27-19

                                  Spayed 07-27-17
