03/14/2020: K. Peter & Jen Spicer want Dash.
03/15/2020: Talked to Tobi and she is thrilled and thinks they sound very good. She got teary on the phone. She can meet them anytime because her daughter’s school is closed for C-19.
I texted the Spicers but they have visitors for the weekend and will get back to me.

03/17/2020: Called the Spicers and left message that we could go ahead. They texted me that they could meet Tobi Wednesday. I called Tobi but she wants to wait till early next week bc her husband wants one more run with Dash this weekend.
Texted the Spicers to tell them Tobi wants to wait till early next week rather than this week. Did not hear back.

03/18/2020: Called the Spicers again, left message, and said I really need to talk to them.
        Sigh.

Dear Humane Society and County Animal Care:
We wanted to alert you to a young couple who applied to Airedale Rescue Group of SC to adopt an Airedale. Their application sounded OK on paper. They were interviewed by an experienced application volunteer, who talked to them about Airedales’ personalities and characteristics, and discussed the applicants’ lifestyle and animal history. We checked their personal reference who spoke highly of them; we spoke to their landlord, who was not aware that they were planning to adopt a dog, but they had no restrictions except for certain breeds. There was no vet reference because their only pet was a turtle.

They said they were familiar with Airedales and that they had previous history with other dogs. The woman said she had trained dogs before. They said in their interview that their Airedale would be alone 0 hours per day; then in the home visit, said the man works from home sometimes as an auto mechanic and works on cars at night. But the woman is home at night.

I’m providing info from their application and from our home visit volunteer:

            Application:
D 10. Will you use a dog crate? a. Yes (please describe below)
D 10. a. If yes, describe the times or reasons you would use a crate. We would crate train for when the dog is left unsupervised, like if we went out for dinner. For all other times, the dog would have a bed to be comfortable in.
D 11. Will household members support and care for the dog? a. Yes (please describe how below)
D 11. a. Describe their support for the dog The dog will receive small meals throughout the day and get hourly mini walks so that he can keep moving and use the bathroom as desired. The dog will be taken to a dog park during the day so that he can be well socialized.
D 12. How will your dog be taken care of when you are away for business or vacation? a. Cared for by household member
D 13. Is there a spot already reserved in your home for an Airedale? b. Bedroom

            From HV Report:
They were unsure where they will leave the dog. They said possibly a crate or let him roam freely. I am not sure where they would put a crate. They said if those options didn’t work, her brother lives 15 minutes away and the dog could stay with him or go to a friend’s farm somewhere in the upstate.

            E. PETS
E 1. Do you currently own or live with any other animals? a. Yes
E 2. Please describe your pets, including the type of animal(s), are they spayed/neutered, and their ages, and your previous pets, including the type of animal and breed, how long you had them, and what happened to them.
I currently have an aquatic turtle for six years. She lives on a windowsill since she requires sunlight to thrive.
I had a marmalade tabby from 2003-2018 and a yellow lab from 2000-2010. Both passed away from natural causes. I had two purebred Siamese cats that are currently 2&3, but a previous roommate kept them because she needed them as emotional support.
E 13. Under what circumstances would you give up a dog? If we were no longer able to care for him.
E 14. Have you ever had to give up a dog? Please explain your experience. Thankfully no.

            From HV Report:
They had a turtle in a tank in the living room. The water in the tank was not clean and appeared to be thick with a film on it.
They told us about a dog they recently had who they gave away. They never really specified why other than the neighbors didn’t like him. He lives on a farm somewhere. They also gave away 2 cats. Jessica said they were emotional support animals for her friend now. The dog they previously owned was difficult to train. They spoke fondly of him sleeping on the couch. But displayed some evident frustration with having him (inherited him from a family member). They were unhappy with interactions with neighbors and feel confident the dog is better off somewhere else.

What are the owner’s responses to behaviors good and bad?
They did not seem aware that bad behavior was a probability, nor did they seem amused at our stories about our dogs mischievous behavior. HV volunteer laughed about her Airedale sneaking to counter surf and ways they have worked on that with him.
They didn’t have a reaction, just shrugged.

We were not allowed to see all the living spaces. What we saw was not good. We had to follow a path through clutter and trash to find an empty spot to stand in the kitchen. At the door to the apartment was a trashcan FULL of “violation notices” from the apartment building.
o Is there anything in general or specifically that would cause you to feel uncomfortable about placing a dog or cat in this home?
They spoke negatively about a few dog breeds and owners of those breeds. They did not demonstrate any knowledge of Airedales, other than they are large and intelligent. I said sometimes I think ours are smarter than I am so I have to play with them to burn their energy. He said, “nah.” Their demeanor in general was off-putting and very uncomfortable. The longest topic of conversation was how much they hated Jack Russell’s and how much better off their previous dog is now that he lives elsewhere.

It was a terrible visit. They were not prepared for a home visit even though they selected the day and time about 1-2 weeks in advance. There comments about dogs in general was shocking and the condition of the turtle tank was alarming. The limited living space we saw was not conducive for a dog especially a curious dog who may want to investigate all of the trash. We also question the prior experience with dales because they could never definitively tell us one they have met. Instead they talked about hearing stories from a friend in California who has one.

My concern is they have already given up a dog they were unable to change. I can’t say I felt like they were very organized or had a clear plan for transitioning a dog who may carry some trauma into their lives. It was also incredibly odd that they wouldn’t let us see all of the apartment. Again, they chose the day and time way in advance and I confirmed with her twice as it got closer to the day. It was actually a really bad visit. When we got in our car to leave we talked about feeling uncomfortable because their demeanor was bizarre. It also took them about 10 minutes to let us in the gate, which they didn’t even do. A resident behind us opened the gate. She didn’t answer my calls or texts during the whole process of getting in but had directed me to contact her that way.

I have been working with ARG for 18 years. This is the worst HV report I’ve ever seen. We thought you should be aware in case they come to you to try to adopt.

I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have about this.

            Thank you,
            Jackie Cash

03/14/2020: The Jordans were to meet the Quinns on Saturday, the 14th; however, Melissa Jordan was sick with a cold and felt that it was not safe to go meet the Quinns.

03/15/2020: I spoke with the Jordans and still feel that they would be great for Clover, but then I spoke to the Quinns on 03/16/2020 and they say NO to the Jordans. They were very angry and hurt that the Jordans didn’t give them more notice. They do not want them to have Clover.

Offered Clover to Erin Jenkins, she declined.

03/12/2020: Offered Clover to Jeramiah Jordan and they want to foster her. Emailed Michael & Elaine, but no response. Called this morning the 13th and their mailbox is full. Sent text to tell them we have a home and the Jordans want to
meet Clover Saturday at Lake Johnson Park near where Michael & Elaine live.

03/10/2020 Will Smith did the home visit for Morry and reported back. He thinks Morry is a very nice man who is very lonely and needs a dog. However, he says Morry is very large and not in good health and is facing probably multiple surgeries in the next few years because of his knees and back. He doesn’t think Morry would be able to chase after a dog who took off. Morry doesn’t have a fenced yard and must walk to the park to exercise his dog. He said he did that with Belle.
                          In Will’s words:
“My only concerns stem from his poor health and various physical issues. He pointed out that he has very bad knees, a bad hip and bad back. Some (or probably all) of which will be addressed medically in the next few years.
Because he doesnt have a yard for the dog to run/play in, he is going to need to walk the dog. It seems as if this will probably get more difficult in the coming years.
My gut tells me that he would be very good to his dog and that he would do anything to make the dogs life good right up to the end. I think he needs a lower energy, mature dog.”

03/09/2020: I spoke to Gwen for nearly an hour and could have talked longer because she is knowledgeable about dogs and interesting. She lives in Indiana from November through mid-March, then Tennessee the rest of the year. She has 8 acres of wooded property in Pleasant View TN, 40 min north of Nashville and is building her house – it’s still under construction, but all the studs are up and some walls. Gwen lives alone with her Airedale. She has 2 sisters nearby — on in Gallatin and one in Mt. Juliet; a son in Atlanta.

She has an 11-mo-old female Airedale, Saylor, who she has trained very well. Saylor has excellent recall — about 90% unless she sees a dog. Ha. 80% if out in public. She says that Saylor went after a herd of deer once, but Barbara called her back and she came!!! The next time they encountered the herd of deer, Saylor just fronted them and they ran away and she didn’t give chase, but came right back to Gwen’s side. She takes Saylor to the dog park in IN and she plays well with every one of them. Gwen used to do obedience and agility and she was a human psychologist. She likes working with training methods and gave me 2 FB pages she follows and likes.

Her 8 acres are wooded and she fenced off a large portion – she estimates 5000 sq ft – with farm wiring 4 x 4 wire squares that she secured to mature trees. She walks from the house through the garage to the fenced area. After she fences all of it, she will have a door that exits into the fenced area.

Although she said she want a dog tolerant of kids, she has no regular child visitors. She has 2 great nieces 8, 12, in Atlanta who visit a couple of times a year.

They live on a creek and Saylor will run through it but hasn’t learned the joys of playing in the water.

Gwen is looking only to foster, transport, or help in another way during the time she’s in TN.

                              Find a home visit.

That is an unusual request, Cindy. Dash and the GD fight over everything, inside and outside. The latest incident the mom related to me was she was drying the GD’s paws after it came in from outside and Dash came into the room and just went for the GD. She had to separate them. I don’t want to ask the mom to try to video them together when she’s doing all she can to keep them separated.
