(Approx 05/20 or so): Mike & Cary decided to keep Atticus. The best solution of all.

04/15/2020: Krissie & I kept in constant contact via FB messenger about Remy’s progress, his vetting, his neutering, and her re-introducing him to Lily because Lily had gone with her boys to stay at their dad’s for a week. The re-introduction went well and she has decided to adopt Remy. She put her info on the microchip although I had sent her all the info to put on it for ARG.

        06/02/2020:
Krissie: Remy attacked Lily this morning and made her bleed 😞 I don’t know what set him off. His jealousy has been pretty high this week as he has new rules from training and has to follow them and she still gets to do what she likes…but even still, we can’t have him going after her. They’ve been getting along very well the last few days and I’ve been really happy bc there hadn’t been any sort of spats between them as there had when he first arrived. Now I’m not sure what to do! He made a cut on her face and obviously I can’t have her in danger. I can talk to the trainer and see what he recommends.

JMC: OMG, Krissie. Yes, talk to the trainer. Dogs absolutely have a sense of fairness, and he may be jealous. In the meantime keep them separate and praise him when he’s being good. Let me know what your trainer says.

Krissie: He’s so much better than he was before training but still if we give him an inch, he’s right back to his old self. He’s very strong willed!
        I’ll contact the trainer

JMC: Thank you, Krissie. Who was the trainer?

Krissie: His name is Kevin Miller and the place is called Canine Revolution. They’ve been excellent.
They have an Airedale on their website

JMC: Krissie, it appears that they are using electronic collars for training. Is that correct? I see nothing in the descriptions of any of the trainers that they have had any professional training by any respected dog training associations or schools. If they are using the techniques of the military or the police to train, that will not work for an Airedale. They make no mention of positive-reinforcement, force-free, non-aversive training methods. They talk about pack structure, often used in place of “dominance” training like Cesar Millan uses. ARG does not approve of training with e-collars. We will be happy to work with you to find a trainer who uses positive methods only. If I am wrong about them, please tell me.

Krissie: They used positive methods – food and positive voice reinforcement for all of the initial training, but then you are right, they introduced a collar to reinforce all of that. I have been using voice and the hand signals mainly since Remy got back, but he’s definitely getting more aggressive with me and trying to become more dominant.

JMC: I am so sorry that he’s exhibiting this behavior. Do you want us to help with another trainer? We want you AND Remy to be happy, and for Lily to be safe!

Krissie: Today I’m just trying to figure out if I can keep him. It’s a lot to handle. He needs constant attention. I think I’m just overwhelmed with it all.

JMC: I understand, Krissie, and if you decide you cannot keep him, we will find him a new home. They are quite resilient and will adapt. Just let me know.

05/30/2020: I spoke to the former foster mom, Lela Mullins: 615-260-4222
Lela had him 6 months. (Catherine Linn got him in February, so Lela got him about August.)

His owners’ father is a breeder (in Maryland) and shows dogs. Owner had Ziggy & Zappa. He got messed up and couldn’t take care of him and went to live with sister in Charlotte with both Airedales. they didn’t know what they were getting into. Ziggy wasn’t getting attention he needed. Sister passed him off to someone who ends up tethered in a backyard. Lela’s friend Daniel drove to Charlotte NC and got Ziggy. Daniel was living with her. She has a large fenced yard and a Belgian Malinois. Ziggy is just typical Airedale and he was with her. Daniel got drunk and wrecked Lela’s truck so she made him move out.

She was going to take him to Agape dog rescue and was going to rehome him through them and she had already adopted from Agape and 3 dogs and a cat and Daniel gone. So Catherine and her husband want a dog. She took Ziggy to meet the Linn’s and they fell in love. He gets along with her dogs 15-lb mix and the Belgian

Never dug to get out, didn’t jump the fence. Dug up moles. She says he’s a great dog and a typical Airedale. He loves everybody.

            05/29/2020:
            Hi Jackie,

We just had a nice talk with Glenn. Gizmo seems to be a sweet girl. We have a few concerns. He had mentioned that when Gizmo came to live with them, she and Bella their other dale didn’t get along for the first few days and are now fine. Since Gene and I both work, we don’t want there to be several days when they aren’t getting along and we aren’t here. He didn’t feel that we should bring Casey to meet Gizmo because he was concerned about the ride home. That really made us nervous.

He did mention that there are other people interested and we certainly want the best for Gizmo as well as Casey. Could Gizmo being the sole dog be better for her? I know he likes the idea of her having a sister though.

Atra had called him and he was going to call them back and he said a couple in Colorado is also interested, so I think we’re thinking about it for the weekend. We just want the best for Gizmo and aren’t sure that it’s with us or maybe someone else.

Thanks so much! We’ll see where it goes.

            Amy

05/30/2020: Gizmo is going to be placed through ATRA Pat McCauley with a family in Colorado.

Glenn Fretty called me today and told me that he had talked to Amy and told her and she agreed that there were some issues that they were concerned about with her being able to get along with casey.

05/18/2020: The owners of Atticus, Mike & Cary Young decided to keep him. Jaye was disappointed but understood completely. She is working on her backyard to make it more dog-friendly — cutting back weeds and saplings. She will wait for the right dog.

In lieu of HV, she sent me photos of her house outside, front and back, and her deck.

05/29/2020: Kelly called these applicants and they have adopted a 5-mo-old Havanese. As Kelly says, that’s just like an Airedale.

                Hahaha.

05/23/2020: I spoke to both Josh & Kristin on the 23rd and they are a very nice couple. My first question re their children:
Josh 41, Kristin 38, Oliver 12, Jackson 12, Henry 9, and Henry 9 2 sons named Henry? YES! They are a blended family. He has Oliver and Henry and she has Jackson and Henry, but the children go to their other parents every other weekend so Josh & Kristin either have all 4 at one time or are all alone at one time.
Tell me about your boys and what activities they are “normally” involved with. How about with C-19. Every other weekend and then Wed & Thur they’re there. 50/50 Her boys play soccer weekends and 2 nights a week. Oliver plays softball. Josh has some flexibility and could work from home more.

Asked about the lot size of their yard: 100 yr old bungalow and lot is several hundred feet deep but narrow. They would have to work on the gate. Very dog-centric neighborhood. Doggy day care and grooming and lounge. Intent to go on lots of walks, inside dog with access to the backyard.

I asked if they knew any Airedales and they do not. A friend of a friend has an Airedale. Kristin had a Schnauzer from college for about 8 to 10 years through first home and first kids. Abby was a Miniature. 20 lbs. She was a pound rescue and don’t know her history. She didn’t like leash. Good in the yard and never liked walking on leash. They know that they’ll have to walk an Airedale on leash and we talked about their prey drive. They seem to understand that Airedales can’t be trusted off leash and will chase after small animals and might not be good with small dogs nor cats. They asked if Airedales would be good at the dog park and we talked about every dog having its own personality and you just have to learn about it and accommodate and/or train. Neither has trained a dog but there are a lot of good trainers in the Atlanta area so they would use one. We talked about training and that it is required for an Airedale.

We talked about post-Covid restrictions and how they would handle the Airedale. They had said their dog would be alone 8 hrs max. I told them that is a Long time for a dog to be alone. Currently, they both are home most of the time. She & Josh are both engineers and work in offices. Working from home right now. When they go back to work, their schedules will overlap slightly. Josh has a short commute and his schedule is more flexible so he could be home more often if necessary.

The boys play soccer weekends and 2 nights a week. Oliver plays softball. The other Henry is not into sports. They mentioned more than once that they had 2 serious dog lovers in their boys. I don’t know which. They would play with them and walk them if they were safe on leash.

They don’t have a vet because they haven’t had a pet since they’ve been in Atlanta. Previously lived in FL. We talked about dog food and I told them about Dog Food Advisor and talked about flea/tick and HW preventative and that they are required year-round in Atlanta.

They are taking a 2-3 week vacation June 13 without the boys. They would not want a dog before then. At the end of the conversation, Josh said they would prefer an Airedale on the smaller side since it will live in the house. I explained that the ones we get in rescue are typically 60-70 lbs, but it’s not unusual to get one much bigger.

I forgot to get the phone number of their personal reference but will get it and call. They will be ready for a HV when we can do it.

Hi, Catherine & Alan. How nice to hear from you and to hear that Curly is doing fine. Having an Airedale that has pulled me down twice, I know how frustrating that can be, not to mention dangerous. I’m glad that he’s learned to walk well on leash. Silver lining for the dog park being closed. We are still mostly shut down here in Memphis, but we’re doing well.

I’d love to see a photo of that sweet Curly when you get a chance. Thank you for the update. Stay well, stay safe.

05/16/2020: Janene sent an email to our web site asking if Gizmo would be good with her dog-savvy cats. I responded:
Morning, Janene. I would not trust Gizmo with cats. She attacked a small dog in her home, one that she had been living with. She also seems to prefer men to women. We do not know how strong that preference is, but she doesn’t like the man’s current partner who has the small dogs. She also does not like his daughters. It may simply be that she’s jealous of his attention to anyone or anything else other than her, but we must be cautious in placing her. I hope we have an Airedale for you soon. Thank you for your message. Jackie

                                05/10/2020: Per conversation with Jaye:
Project manager for sign company. They are rebranding all the Verizon stores across the country. She makes certain everything inside and outside the store complies with their guidelines (a 300+ page notebook) and handles coding and licensing with municipalities. (Very responsible job that requires attention to detail, staying current, multi-tasking.)
Her 30-year-old nephew Andrew lives with her: Nephew He’s an EMT and works 8 p to 7 a , so one of them is home almost all the time. He is engaged to be married and asked if he could live with her so he can save money and live a more settled life (instead of moving every year). She said he’s very serious about his future.

She has just moved into her new home this past weekend! She will send photo of her home from street, photos exiting door to yard, photo or 2 of inside. (She’s not completely moved in yet; boxes and not all furniture.)
Send photo of yard – front and back The yard is overgrown but the dogs can go out there. The landlord has allowed her to extend the fence to encompass the back door. She has a deck with a pergola and they are going to put a real roof over the pergola so that if she’s cleaning inside she can let the pups stay out on the deck. She’s going to have cots on the deck for the dogs.

The dog would stay in the house while I’m not home. The dog can be crated or not. Tell me about a typical week day and typical weekend. Typical 7 am to 4 pm. Nephew 8 pm – 7 am.
Someone will be home all the time. She Can work from home when she wants to. Weekends she’s home. She’s a homebody. She will take a couple of big trips a year. She didn’t ever board Yogi; she hires pet sitter. She used to pet sit for a family but doesn’t pet sit any more. She and a close friend might sit for each other but that’s about it. She would take Atticus everywhere she could with her.

Hiking, walking, boating, road trips Do you have access to a boat? Did Yogi go in the boat? She used to house sit for a couple who had a home on the lake and Yogi loved going to the dock and on the boat, but not IN the water.

Did you use a trainer with Yogi? Winston-Salem Dog Training Facility. She plans to use them for Atticus also.

Where will your Airedale sleep? Did Yogi sleep with her; he slept where he wanted to. Started in her room and then go to his bed or his couch.

My nephew Andrew has a female/ spayed, 6 y/o shepherd mix. She has been with him for three years now and doesn’t like to be alone. She will enjoy having a companion. How big is Bowie? (Is she up to date on all vax etc.) Bowie is 48 lbs; small. Up to date on everything. Bowie has food allergies, which are under control. How are they controlled? She’s not really allergic but nephew was feeding her people food and that would upset her stomach.

Last Airedale was on Purina Pro Plan. I will feed what dog is currently eating as long as it continues to give the proper nourishment without issues. I told her to Check out Dog Food Advisor. PPP is not a great food.

Simparica Google this. Do not recommend oral flea/tick preventatives. Neuro side effects, seizures.

Yogi escaped — slipped his collar — a couple of times on walks. He would take off for the woods. I could get him back by driving the car near him. He always came immediately, but she switched to a martingale collar and he couldn’t escape from her any more. Whew!

05/12/2020 Per Vet’s office: She was a great dog mom. She kept Yogi up to date on everything – hw preventative, flea/tick preventative. She brought him in every 6 months for blood work for his thyroid issues. He was on anti-inflammatories for his hips and thyroid medicines. She had ultrasound done when suggested. She did everything she could for him and brought him in for euthanasia last week.

Lloyd has known Jaye 20 years. He knew she was getting Atticus and is so excited for her. He loved Yogi and it was so hard to lose him. Jaye is wonderful.
