08-01-2020: From Shawn: She was very happy to see me. Tail up and wagging, but still pretty out of it. She was very nauseous throughout the night, but the vet told us to give her a Pepcid which really helped. She slept very soundly after that. She wouldn’t eat this morning, but took her pain meds with a piece of cheese and curled up in the middle of the floor and went back to sleep. I’m sure she will feel much better when I get home from work. Her incision looks good and they actually do a very small tattoo on her belly.

July 31, 2020 at 2:34 pm in reply to: Lucy, fka Jana, 5 yo? Adopted by Camille & Joe Klotz, New Bern #2524507-24-2020: Shawn, you and Gail are terrific, and we appreciate so much your taking such good care of this girl. We’d love to see more photos. And, can you write up a profile to give us an idea of her personality and her manners. You say she and the Foxes are not simpatico. What do you think is the issue? How is she on leash? How does she react to other people and other dogs on leash? Has she met any children yet? What ages? Anything you can tell us will help us find the right home. Thank you so much, Shawn. I will make sure we stay in touch!

I will get them to you on Sunday if that’s ok. It doesn’t appear that Jana is very socialized, but we are working on it with her. I think our dogs are intimidated by her size as they haven’t been around many larger dogs and she definitely senses their fears. She is meeting our neighbors hound on Sunday so we will see how she is with dogs more her size. We are working on leash training and she is much, much better. She does continue to try and back out if her collar occasionally, but mostly when she’s frightened. We are using a front attached harness as well as martingale and she is much better with the harness.
We had an 8 y/o little girl over yesterday and she was fine with her. She does jump up on you sometimes, but did not do that with the child. She was very curious with the little girl so I’m not sure she’s had much exposure there either. We really don’t have many friends with children so are limited there. I really think Jana was an inside dog for part if her life, but definitely seems to have spent some years as an outside dog😢. She does not get on the furniture at all except being coaxed up on the bed which she loves. She lays as close to you as possible and loves belly rubs.
Shawn
Lol! She’s very good at sit and down as long as there are treats involved. 😊 She really is a great girl, just a bit fearful which makes me so sad. She adores Gail and I though which is very heartwarming.❤️07-31-2020:
Jana is at the vets office for her spay today. Poor girl is still very frightened and growled at the tech trying to take her back. Gail stayed with her and they let her take her to the back to make sure she was ok. They gave her a sedative and will call Gail as soon as she is out of surgery so she can be there when she wakes up. Something had to happen to this super sweet gal. Please send her some love and good vibes today.
JC:Oh, poor girl. Was the tech a female? Will they keep her overnight or release her today? Sweet Jana. I’m sending Aire-Zen for her to have an easy day and not get too stressed by this. She’ll be so glad to be back home with you. We’re looking for her a home.Yes it was a female. She does seem more frightened when passing men on our walks more than woman.
Gail will bring her home tonight as there’s no one that stays at the vet office overnight.
I feel bad for her as she is such a GREAT girl when it’s just Gail and I with her, but if anyone comes over she gets very fearful and growls. Definitely needs a quiet home or someone who can spend lots of time on socializing her. One things for sure she makes one hell of a watchdog. 🐾JC: All good information to have, Shawn. I hope she does well with the cone. Please call me when you have to pay and let’s pay for pain meds to go home. ARg will pay of course. We’d prefer to pay directly to the clinic, but if you’ve already paid, we’ll reimburse you. Thank you for taking such good care of this girl.
We have a soft inflatable collar for her. I already paid for her spay as they make you pay when making the appointment. She is such a gentle, loving girl at home, but once you try to expose her to something new she is frightened. It’s so sad just trying to imagine if something happened or she just was a total backyard dog which is quite common in this area.
Shawn
No worries on paying for her spay I will forward you the bill, but consider it a donation from Gail and I .07-31-2020 Katly Cullers or Katie Marie Smith (on FB) has posted on several Airedale pages including our FB page. She has the Airedale community going crazy and people saying they’ll take this dog only they’re in NY and can she get him there. Etc.
I’ve posted that we turned him down and referred her to an animal behaviorist in Atlanta, Faye Owens. I’ve also posted that she reached out to us in April and then didn’t follow up.
July 30, 2020 at 8:05 pm in reply to: Teddy, 3 yo M/N, Foster w Cindy Green, 2 bite incidents #2524307-28-2020 From Cindy:
Yes , Jackie. I think it would be a shame not to place this dog. Just need someone aware of his tendencies and mindful of keeping him well socialized with the world and out of an “ an charge “ mindset.07-29-2020 From Cindy:
Jackie,
I took Teddy up to campus to watch the young girls soccer practice this morning. He showed a little prancing and interest when they were loud and moving but readily settled.
I allowed a few greetings with adults. I ask people to wait, place him in a sit and then release him to choose if he wants to move forward and greet. He is calm and mannerly in his greetings, no jumping or mouthing.
We also had a person go by us on a bicycle and he showed no interest.
Only clue this morning again indicating some claiming or guarding , was his desire to mark every garbage can which I am sure smelled of food. This guy is capable of a lot of good stuff with proper guidance.

Thanks for the clarification, Chris. I’m so glad that the Rilexine plus your common sense treatments have done such a great job. This pain is mysterious. I hope your vet can get to the bottom of it. Do you think it could be his ears? I sure wish they could talk. (But would probably change my mind pretty quickly!)
Oh, sorry about Cooper’s tummy distress. Hope it was nothing and he comes home hungry.

wrote: Jackie, the spot on his head is actually a bald spot, stemming from that same sunburn problem that created the big one on his lower back. It has completely healed, so now it’s a matter of the fur regenerating. I’m seeing signs that it is happening on his back, and that still has some scabbing going on, although he’s knocking the scale off everytime he goes outside.
Just this morning, I had he and Quincey outside on the deck, and Zeke issued that same, distressed, yelp, and scurried off, despite having no one within three or four feet of him, no leash, and no apparent contact with anything living or inanimate. I will ask Dr. Clark to look hard for it. I can’t find nor trigger it, but then Jennifer quickly located it, again, yesterday, when she came by to work with him. She knows how to find it without triggering the discomfort. I’m probably too gingerly, I have a good idea where it is.
I’ll include Pat and Cyn on all future correspondence, and will try to get better pictures of him, this afternoon. Cooper upchucked a ton of kibble last night, then refused breakfast, again, this a.m., so he’s at Cobb, and Zeke is a bit off his oats. He’s respectful (or scared!) of Quincey, so is turning his attention to me as a playmate, but I’ve also been engrossed in stuff relating to my board work, so he’s a bit discouraged, at the moment

Subject: Re: Z-Man approaching week 3Hi, Chris. Thanks for another good update. I looked at the new photos. Does he have a white spot on his head? I’ve not seen that in any other photos. Maybe it’s an artifact.
I’m encouraged that he’s making progress both with his skin and his manners. the mouthing is difficult to change. Keep a toy handy! It’s sad that he still balks at coming inside, but Jennifer is probably right about his hesitancy. It will abate, surely, as he becomes more accustomed to being welcomed into the door. I had a rescue like that. He would hide outside in the bushes and I would have to go out and put him on leash. He stayed timidly curled even while standing for months. Think Uriah Heep.
I hope your vet can examine his neck and jaw when he goes in just to feel around and try to localize the source of the pain.
Tell Quincey this is not forever! We are considering folks right now.

Jennifer came today and worked with him a bit. She’s obviously much better than we are at getting the desired behavior. We will continue to try to correct his mouthiness, build trust, discourage countersurfing, etc.
He often balks on entering the house, especially from the garage. Jennifer offered that he was probably beaten or shouted at when he tried to come inside, unbidden, in his prior life. It’s not every instance, and it’s getting better, but may not be completely cleared up by the time he is welcomed into his forever home.
That “yelp” occurred when she was working with him, on lead, in the house, but with a cloth martingale rather than a “pinch” collar, and none of the three of us observed any undue stress from the collar/leash combination. Clearly, it’s still there. We’ve not been able to walk them since Monday a.m., for various reasons, but I’ll be alert tomorrow morning for a pattern, so we can pass it along.
His back and head are healing up amazingly quickly, and I see fur growth starting on parts that were barren just a few days ago. It’s dry as a bone, and the only attention he pays to the spot on his back is when he rolls on the lawn, trying to scratch the itch. The scabs are flaking off constantly, and I’m optimistic that there will be no sign of any injury beyond the bare spots, come the weekend after next.
As we all know, neutering is Monday, Aug. 3, when he’ll also have his hind end examined with radiology to see if there’s anything in there. I am less and less afraid that there’s something congenital – he may still be growing, and just be a big, clumsy puppy. I will be interested to see what he weighs, 17 days after we got him, for all of which he’s received proper nutrition (as well as treats). He seems to be a bit taller than when he arrived, despite the trim, and maybe filling out, too. If he’s up a couple of pounds, my suspicions will be confirmed.
Quincey has become aggressive with him, for transgressions we haven’t detected, or maybe just out of jealousy, because Cooper and Zeke have become fast friends, and play a great deal. We’re riding herd on things.
I don’t have Pat’s nor Cyn’s e-mails, but if you’ve passed the links along to them, no need to worry about it.

By submitting this form, I certify that the information I have provided is true and accurate. I am physically, emotionally, and financially able to care for an Airedale. I understand that Airedales require both physical and mental stimulation to thrive and I will provide both. I understand that Airedales that come into rescue may not have been trained or socialized properly and may need extra time, patience, and care to adjust to a new environment. This may include the need to attend pet obedience classes to help build a better bond with the new dog in the home. I understand that proper food and veterinarian care can be costly, and I am able to meet these needs. I agree that Airedale Rescue Group may check my veterinarian, groomer and personal references, as well as, my landlord, if applicable. Home visits will be conducted prior to and following an adoption to ensure the safe-keeping of the Airedale. ARG reserves the right to decline adoptions. ARG reserves the right to reclaim any dog who, in our judgment, appears neglected, abused, unkempt, or unsafe. ARG reserves the right to reclaim any dog for non-payment of the adoption fee at any time. I hereby agree, and consent
Signed: Linda Diane O’Cain07-29-2020: Susan called and asked if we would reimburse her for Bentley’s first grooming, which I had told her we would. She has already had it done and it cost $65 and she’ll see if the groomer can get her a receipt. She’s taking him to the vet tomorrow for anal gland expression and will get them to insert a microchip and call me to pay for that.
She said he did really well in boot camp and he’s sitting well, waiting at the door, stays, but is still very mouthy and they’re working on that.

Jackie,
it was so nice talking to you yesterday. The pictures are beautiful, she is breathtaking, and we are in love.
Alex and I discussed her unique needs and are concerned that with Laddie- who is nearly 2 and so playful, we won’t be able to keep her calm for 3-4 months. In addition to two excited kids and a family that spends a lot of time outdoors in the summer, we are concerned about our ability to give her the calmness that she needs to heal appropriately and we don’t want to stress her and Laddie out attempting to keep them apart. That reality makes us deeply sad as we’d love to welcome her into our home to know love and joy for her life and would love to bend over backwards for a dale in need. But we need to do what is best for her. That said, we are committed to helping. If there is a way that we can help her, perhaps with costs, through the heartworm process and welcome her into our home at or towards the end of her recovery, we would be very open to that.
Lastly, please click on this link for a tour of our house and yard. I’m happy to provide more information if you’d like. Here are some pictures of the house from when we bought it. The only changes are: 1 the front yard is now a garden and we re-did the kitchen, but the layout is the same.

07-28-2020: Tracey called me last week and said she and Rob want another Airedale. They do still have Cooper, the Aire-Poodle, 5 yo, a big male/neutered who looks more like an Irish Wolfhound; and River, a small female/spayed Airedale who’s 7 yo. They get along great and play and snuggle together. She wants to play more than Cooper does. I told Tracey that adding a third dog to 2 who get along so well could present a problem. But, keep them in mind for the right dog, not a tiny one like River nor a huge one like Cooper.
