08-20-2020: Shawn took Jana to a kennel/training facility owned by a friend and Jana did great with meeting other dogs. She was on a long lead, just dragging it, but was good at meeting and was not reactive. She can be reactive when on leash.
Jill Heske is interested in her and I connected her to Shawn via text on Monday, the 17th. Jill is a bit slow to respond, but today she said she wanted to have a meet-and-greet. I talked to Shawn and we agree that Jill should visit Jana in Charlotte at the same kennel so that they can let Summer (Jill’s dale) and Jana interact in a safe, secure environment with all of them keeping watch, including the trainer.
I have emailed Jill to see if she can do that this coming Sunday so we can get Jana in a home sooner rather than later. We have other interest in her.

08-??-2020: JMC authorized Emily Shervin of The Grateful Dog in Atlanta to work with Marcela and Izzy and family.
Work 770-702-8427
Cell 770-710-8394
thegratefuldog.com.08-20-2020 Report from Emily from last night’s initial meeting/training session:
They met during torrential thunderstorms, so Izzy was panting and shaking, but warmed up to Emily right away.
The family has more ules than she thought they would have.
the Father has main control of Izzy, but Izzy still tests him. She’s not allowed on the furniture. He sometimes comes home and finds her on a bed and he grabs the collar and pulls her off and she’ll growl at him. Emily told them to leave her leash on and not to grab her by the collar, but use the leash and say “Off.”
She does continue to growl at the 11-year-old boy when he walks by or when he touches her. But she’s a talker. Have the boy teaching her find-it and to walk through a hula hoop. It’s an easy thing to do. Have dog go through it, gradually raise it and see if she will jump through it. Told him to Set up solo cups in the backyard to weave Izzy through. And she told him to look up some youtube videos of other easy tricks to teach Izzy. Use treats to lure her into these tricks. She advised that Izzy never be left alone with the child. And when other kids come over, baby gate her in kitchen.
Did some basic things and she walked Izzy in the rain using a gentle leader and an easy walk harness. They are going to use the gentle leader. Right now, they’re using just the Martingale.
Emily advised them to get some Puppy citronella spray to use when she sees other dogs. The brother’s dog and Izzy do not get along; it’s smaller and female. Husband said initially they just went for each other. Brother’s dog growls and walks away. Izzy growls and lunges. They watch each other’s dogs when the other is away for any period. But the dogs fight. They got in a bad fight and Izzy won. Husband says she has to get along with his brother’s dog. Emily told him she does not have to get along with that dog and they should make other arrangements.
She found out that the first time that Izzy bit the child, the child blew in her face. Marcela didn’t know that. The second time, they were just face to face. Emily cautioned against that.
There is Nothing outwardly aggressive from Izzy.
Emily is going back on Monday if the weather allows.

August 18, 2020 at 4:47 pm in reply to: July 2020-Diane & William O’Cain, McDonough, GA, E-fence, Current ADT., 5 hr alone, #2542608-18-2020: I never updated this post after I lost my summary here. I’ve gone back to my notes and am filling in:
Asked about the 15-year-old daughter that is there some: How is she with dogs? Suzy (their Airedale) is protective of Kaylee.
Amber Winslett was breeder. If William doesn’t get her food quickly enough, she talks to him.talk about pros & cons of e-fence.
Suzy is trained to e-fence. She has never even gotten close to the barrier. Never breached it. She started after a squirrel and Diane told her no. Has open access to the lake No flags for the lake. How big is the lake? Could she swim across it? She could, but she won’t. If she’s down there she wears her life jacket. She will bark at deer. No dogs in the neighborhood. There is a leash law, so no other animals in their yards. New neighbors and they don’t have animals. Friends bring their animals over for playdates. She goes to daycare if Diane is going to work 8 hours. She gets along with all the dogs. She starts bouncing and squealing to go to daycare. Loves it. Any visitors to their home with dogs – yes. Dad has Yorkie but it’s too mouthy. Big dogs come over too. When they’re gone or if she has to work an 8-hr day, their new dog would stay with Suzy in the finished basement. Husband goes to work 8 to 5. She’s a Realtor and home until about noon and shows houses from 12 to 4 and then is home. Running in the neighborhood. Suzy goes with them everywhere. She’s like their child.
Checked on vet: Suzy is up to date on all vax, not due for more till April 21; she’s on Proheart and Simparica. Comes in regularly for ear cleaning and nail trims. Good client.
I do want to mention to them that Purina is not great food.
Need home visit.

August 17, 2020 at 4:35 pm in reply to: Lucy, fka Jana, 5 yo? Adopted by Camille & Joe Klotz, New Bern #2541608-07-2020
We are using a crate and she is fine going in and out now. I don’t think she was ever in one much, but she does sleep in it at our house. She loves treats and will jump in her crate very easily with treats. She barks if one of the foxies gets close, but nothing crazy. She barks when we leave the house and if we go in the house when she’s outside she cries at the door. She doesn’t try to tear it down or anything just get anxious.
She would definitely do best in as quiet a home as possible.
I can see if I can expose her to cats at my neighbor’s house on Sunday. Her prey drive doesn’t appear to be nearly as extreme as my Fox Terriers.
I do worry about any rescue being placed with cats, especially Fox Terriers, but Jana really doesn’t seem to have a big prey drive to me or Gail who is with her while I’m at work. I asked her last night what she thought about Jana and cats and she also thinks she could be taught to live with cats. Gail is a dog trainer and volunteers for our local Humane Society. She’s been great teaching sweet Jana that life inside is great and working with her leash training. Jana did not adversely react to the man we passed this morning on our walk like she did with the guy last week. It could have been a reaction to the large dog he was walking? Who knows, but feeling better about her and men than after her frightened demeanor last week.
