She needs to have short sessions with Summer not unlimited access. Don’t let them get too aroused/high energy/anxiety.
She needs structure. Work on impulse control. Make her wait at doorways, insure she is getting adequate rest. Put them on lead & take walks together.
The husband tries to act like he’s ok but even I saw the insecurity/uneasiness in him. I’m sure Jana senses it even more.
Calmness reinforcement needed. Put one in a crate & the other out or both in crates in order to give them licki mat/Kong/ bone as a passive calming activity. Catch them being still/chill/calm & calmly&quietly deliver treat.

I’ve been on the phone with Jill for a while. She doesn’t think this will work at all. The situation this morning: Jana was coming into the house, Summer was inside. Jana came in and just went after her. It was scary. She grabbed a towel and slapped her with it and she stopped and moved away. It was not just snarling and bitching. It was a full-on I’m top dog.
Jana is a stocky dog but Summer is taller.
Jana is wary of her husband but curious. She’s not afraid but just hasn’t warmed to him yet.
Jill believes she will be fine with older kids but probably not with other dogs. I asked about a male dog. She doesn’t think so.
IDK. Let’s go back to our people who were interested in her and take a look.

Hi Jackie,
I wanted to let you know we are having some integration issues with Jana. She is a delightful dog and I think will eventually come along great with people. She and Summer also play very well outside. However, as Jana settles in she is becoming very aggressive toward Summer in the house. I certainly expect to see some general bitching, snapping, and jockeying. I integrated a Doberman and Pitt mix and we had plenty of that.
Jana, on the other hand, attacked Summer outright this morning and seemed to mean it. Luckily Summer is very meek and I was able to get Jana off of her. Summer seems to love her but she is also bigger than Jana and can be a pest. I see Jana getting increasingly annoyed by her. I am happy to give her time, but if she responds by attacking I will not be able to monitor them or possibly even keep Summer safe.
I’m really not sure what to do. Jana is such a sweet dog so this is very upsetting. We feel luck to have found her and want to offer her a nice life with a family and dog parks and training classes, but I am wondering whether a larger pesky sister is too much for her.
Let me know what you think.

Hello Jackie! Thanks for reaching back out. We are still in the remodel chaos with our leak and finally have just gotten the insurance appraisal. So nothing has even started but we have to rip out our whole first floor hardwoods and it is just a big mess. With that said, we don’t see it feasible to replace our backyard fence anytime soon so want to bow out for now. Our current fence is way too short.
So sorry for the troubles but we just are overwhelmed with the impending home remodel.
Fondly,
Renie

Subject: RE: Airedale RescueI am glad you have not forgotten about me.
I am still living with my son, and I do not know for how long, but for a while longer.
My second Papillion died a couple of months ago of old age. I cried. That was my second dog to die within 6 or 7 months. It is just my son and I living in the house now. We both are working out of his home, and there are no pets at present.
I am starting a new venture of helping individuals and families who are nearing home foreclosure to escape their debt and endeavor to give them some hope for a better future for them. Not all is lost for them, though they may think so. We will see how that goes. This pursuit would also provide a better opportunity for me and perhaps open the door a little wider for an adoption.
Since you and I last communicated, I have considered a great variety of dog breeds and their traits, but I keep coming back to the Airedale as my first choice. I remember vividly the two that I had years ago and the joy they brought to the family. I still prefer a mature dog that is healthy physically, mentally, and emotionally, rather than a puppy. Perhaps some day that may be realized. In the meantime, I will just have to wait patiently and see what comes. I will no longer actively pursue getting a dog only to have my hopes dashed to the ground. If you were successful in finding an adoptable Airedale that may come into our household, that would be wonderful.
Thanks for your email, and God Bless! That lifted my spirits.
P.S. Yes, I am very safe and quite healthy. Fortunately we live in a safe area of the country. South Carolina is a very good state with a lot of good people. Thanks for inquiring. I hope you are as well.

Subject: Airedale RescueHello, Malcolm. I wanted to touch base and let you know I haven’t forgotten about you. When we last communicated in April we were going to try to find someone who could conduct your home visit for us. Of course, Covid put an end to that, so I wanted to check in with you. Are you still interested in adopting an Airedale? You were planning on moving into a new home; have you done that or are you still living with your son? Do you still have your Papillon?
And, of course, I hope you are healthy and staying safe.
Thank you,

Marilyn –
I understand and not too worry about asking questions. It is good to have the information in case a plan is needed. If the situation changes, we are here to take good care of Diesel. I wish the sister all the best with him.
My regards,

I’m not sure she will actually go through with that plan, but for now, we will be in a holding pattern. One of those situations that “we’ll believe it when we see it.” :-/
I will keep you posted though. I am sorry to have troubled you this morning, but I am very grateful for your speedy reply.
North Carolina is a very beautiful state! My ancestral Rowell family is from the Goose Creek area in South Carolina, along the NC/SC border.
Small world! I will be in touch soon either way. Thanks again for rescuing these pups and allowing them lifetimes of love!

Subject: TeddyI got a call from Cheryl Cohen, Teddy’s former owner. She went to Court this morning for the “Citation for dog-at-large.” She had been told that she would not need a lawyer/representative.
The people who filed suit stood up and tried to turn it into a hearing and said they wanted Teddy brought back to GA and euthanized. She stood up and said she was told this is not a hearing. She doesn’t have Teddy and he is not vicious. Then the Court stopped the entire thing.
She does rattle on, so I don’t know what the upshot was, except the Court admonished Animal Control for not following proper procedure, whatever that was supposed to be.
I emphasized to her that Teddy belongs to ARG and GA cannot require us to return him to GA.
Just FYI.

Hi Jackie,
Will let you know how the vet visit goes next week.
I mention some of the quirky things I notice about this guy as I think about how best to help him be placed in a suitable home and what would constitute a suitable home for him.
Just guessing on the odd toy thing but possibly the Cohens corrected him off of grabbing any kind of toy Or object from the floor in an attempt to resolve some conflict in the home between the dogs. Thus I have kept an eye out for resource guarding . Or they “over-corrected” when teaching a “leave it” such that he makes no attempt to pick up a dropped or thrown object. He has clearly received some obedience training. At any rate I mention this as some people may like that he seems very obedient, others may think he is aloof. I often see posts in some of my groups where a dog is re-surrendered because adopters feel the dog does not like them or does not bond with them. Thus I am trying to get him to engage in something that a new owner can use to interact with him and develop a bond.
We have several dogs at Woofers that have same bark issue. It is similar to a singer that looses their voice after continual use. So he may have been a nuisance barker at some point (as have/are the dogs I mention from Woofers) . Don’t really think there is permanent damage as no visible exterior signs or injury. Again just a clue to his possible past issues. He does alert bark, just odd sounding and not always sure what has alarmed him.Teddy is a bit of an odd guy and don’t really feel I have his ticket as yet. Hope there is someone special out there for him.

Morning, Cindy. Thanks for this update. I am sorry to hear that he is “shut down” and you haven’t found what makes him happy. That is very sad as young as he is. It’s also sad that he doesn’t know how to “play” with toys or balls. I haven’t heard of dogs taught not to touch anything with their mouths. Not to touch skin with their mouths, yes, but anything?! Bizarre. From what we know about him, he played with the little Yorkies and went with his dad onto the golf course in the cart and would stay in the cart while dad golfed. I don’t know how old the Cohens are; he is a practicing physician and she’s at home except for volunteer work. It’s a shame about the vet’s office, for many reasons, but for you not to be able to be with him especially. You’re right to muzzle him.
Do you think his bark box was damaged by pulling against a leash? I know they used a prong collar with him but also an electronic collar. Is it worrisome enough to ask the vet to check it?
We will continue to evaluate applicants for an appropriate home for him. Thank you, Cindy.

wrote: Jackie,
I have vet appointment for Teddy this coming Tuesday. Unfortunately there have been Covid cases at the Vet office so appointments are slow. A vet tech comes to your car and takes the dog in so do not get to observe the process. I plan to have him muzzled to be on the safe side since I can not be the one to walk him in and handle him in a new place. I have no indication he would have a problem but don’t want any more incidents on his record. I regularly brush him and handle him without any issue.
I continue to do as much walking with Teddy as possible but weather has been very hot with daily thunder showers. Thus also not been a good time to take him to Woofers or even get much exposure to public situations.
At home I walk Teddy with my dogs and we practice stationing where the dogs all sit together and I offer treats in a random order as I say their names. No issues with this structured interaction, no resource guarding.
He is an oddly shut down dog in many ways. I have been trying to find his “happy” to give him an outlet. He will not touch a chew toy. I have tried to get him to play with a ball such that he can enjoy a fetch game. He will get excited, run out to the ball but then stop and will not touch it with his mouth. If I get him really excited by tossing things he will run out and throw himself down and roll on it to interact. Suspect some previous training attempt to teach him not to use his mouth. Hope to find something that he enjoys and can be used to build a relationship.
He is quite vigilant when outdoors. His “bark box” is damaged or worn out so has an odd dull bark and sometimes just a squeak.
When we are walking and he becomes concerned about something he starts tapping my leg repeatedly with his nose. Not always sure what he is concerned about but a definite communication from him and he gives little communication.
He might be suited to someone with a bit more of a country life where home life is quiet but his vigilance about strange noises and people my be of value. He seems happy to just watch the world from his cot bed. And he can smile.

Have you incorporated him into your pack yet or taken him to daycare? We have not identified anyone that would provide the kind of structure, consistent training, and home situation (without kids) that he needs. But, we’re looking.
Let us know how he’s doing. And, I hope you and Bruce are doing well.
