Subject: Jana Transport, Sunday, August 30, 2020Hello, friends of Airedale Rescue Group. Thank you all for helping us get this sweet, 5-year-old female Airedale to her forever home. She is a sweetheart and is friendly, but she is sometimes reluctant to get into cars. You may need to lure her into your car with a treat. Jana will have a collar with tags, leash, & harness; vet records; heartworm pills; food; and a few toys.
Please make sure I have all of your phone numbers correct below. I will send a group text once I know for sure so we’re all connected.
Jill Heske — 706-228-1663
Teri Murdock — 706-840-3169
Peggy Binette — 803-413-3323
Kelly Geren-Imbody — 219-628-0071
Camille Klotz — 252-635-3209SAFETY
Regular safety – Please be aware of Jana when opening car doors, transferring her from person to person, always making sure a hand is on the leash. Remember that she may be confused by the recent changes in her life, including this transport. Unless necessary, remain in the car with A/C until the transfer occurs; when opening car doors, ensure that the leash is secured. We recommend closing the car door on the end of the leash (with about 4-6 inches hanging outside the door) so that when you take her out of the vehicle you can have your hand on the leash before you even open her door. When allowing potty breaks, ensure that collar/leash(s) are tight for no escape; be aware of surroundings – even a plastic bag in the wind may spook a dog in unfamiliar settings. Do not let her off-leash at any time 😊COVID Safety – please use COVID-19 precautions. Please wear a mask when meeting the next volunteer, and employ social distancing. One example may be for the arriving driver to get Jana out of their car and the accepting driver unlocks their car to allow Jana into it. After touching the leash from the other driver, use your hand sanitizer.
Heat Safety – It’s going to be very hot tomorrow. Do not feel the need to walk her outside if you arrive early. Sitting in the car in the A/C will be fine for her. Please bring along a bowl and a bottle of water and offer water to Jana at each handoff. We want to be sure that she stays hydrated in this hot weather, but don’t be overly concerned if she doesn’t drink at each handoff. She might also appreciate a small treat or two.
All times are approximate, allowing time for Jana to sniff around, go potty, and have a drink of water. (Humans, too.)
Please call the next driver if you see that you are running behind or run into any problems. And, please let me know when you have handed Jana over to the next person. PHOTOS AT HAND-OFF ARE APPRECIATED!!!

08-27-2020:
Hi Jackie,We’re fine here. Summer and Jana are able to have play time. Now that I know her limits, I just “social distance” them when I see she doesn’t want to be nagged. Poor Summer just loves her, though.
She is such a sweet dog. She’s sitting here making a hard play for my breakfast. She is going to be a shameless counter surfer and food thief, a true Airedale!
She’s slowly warming up to my husband. She hasn’t been aggressive at all toward him, just a little unsure and very interested. Also, for reasons only she knows, she is afraid of belts. She ran for the hills when Ted went to put one on. I do think she would do great with a teenager and even a medium sized older dog.
I’m not sure about a dog park yet since there can sometimes be bullies.
I’ll be glad to help in any way I can.

She needs to have short sessions with Summer not unlimited access. Don’t let them get too aroused/high energy/anxiety.
She needs structure. Work on impulse control. Make her wait at doorways, insure she is getting adequate rest. Put them on lead & take walks together.
The husband tries to act like he’s ok but even I saw the insecurity/uneasiness in him. I’m sure Jana senses it even more.
Calmness reinforcement needed. Put one in a crate & the other out or both in crates in order to give them licki mat/Kong/ bone as a passive calming activity. Catch them being still/chill/calm & calmly&quietly deliver treat.

I’ve been on the phone with Jill for a while. She doesn’t think this will work at all. The situation this morning: Jana was coming into the house, Summer was inside. Jana came in and just went after her. It was scary. She grabbed a towel and slapped her with it and she stopped and moved away. It was not just snarling and bitching. It was a full-on I’m top dog.
Jana is a stocky dog but Summer is taller.
Jana is wary of her husband but curious. She’s not afraid but just hasn’t warmed to him yet.
Jill believes she will be fine with older kids but probably not with other dogs. I asked about a male dog. She doesn’t think so.
IDK. Let’s go back to our people who were interested in her and take a look.

Hi Jackie,
I wanted to let you know we are having some integration issues with Jana. She is a delightful dog and I think will eventually come along great with people. She and Summer also play very well outside. However, as Jana settles in she is becoming very aggressive toward Summer in the house. I certainly expect to see some general bitching, snapping, and jockeying. I integrated a Doberman and Pitt mix and we had plenty of that.
Jana, on the other hand, attacked Summer outright this morning and seemed to mean it. Luckily Summer is very meek and I was able to get Jana off of her. Summer seems to love her but she is also bigger than Jana and can be a pest. I see Jana getting increasingly annoyed by her. I am happy to give her time, but if she responds by attacking I will not be able to monitor them or possibly even keep Summer safe.
I’m really not sure what to do. Jana is such a sweet dog so this is very upsetting. We feel luck to have found her and want to offer her a nice life with a family and dog parks and training classes, but I am wondering whether a larger pesky sister is too much for her.
Let me know what you think.

August 26, 2020 at 7:56 pm in reply to: 2020-HOLD for HV Renie & Bruce Carroll, Maryville, TN never HV 2022 #2551608-19-2020 From Renie:
Hello Jackie! Thanks for reaching back out. We are still in the remodel chaos with our leak and finally have just gotten the insurance appraisal. So nothing has even started but we have to rip out our whole first floor hardwoods and it is just a big mess. With that said, we don’t see it feasible to replace our backyard fence anytime soon so want to bow out for now. Our current fence is way too short.
So sorry for the troubles but we just are overwhelmed with the impending home remodel.
Fondly,
Renie

Subject: RE: Airedale RescueI am glad you have not forgotten about me.
I am still living with my son, and I do not know for how long, but for a while longer.
My second Papillion died a couple of months ago of old age. I cried. That was my second dog to die within 6 or 7 months. It is just my son and I living in the house now. We both are working out of his home, and there are no pets at present.
I am starting a new venture of helping individuals and families who are nearing home foreclosure to escape their debt and endeavor to give them some hope for a better future for them. Not all is lost for them, though they may think so. We will see how that goes. This pursuit would also provide a better opportunity for me and perhaps open the door a little wider for an adoption.
Since you and I last communicated, I have considered a great variety of dog breeds and their traits, but I keep coming back to the Airedale as my first choice. I remember vividly the two that I had years ago and the joy they brought to the family. I still prefer a mature dog that is healthy physically, mentally, and emotionally, rather than a puppy. Perhaps some day that may be realized. In the meantime, I will just have to wait patiently and see what comes. I will no longer actively pursue getting a dog only to have my hopes dashed to the ground. If you were successful in finding an adoptable Airedale that may come into our household, that would be wonderful.
Thanks for your email, and God Bless! That lifted my spirits.
P.S. Yes, I am very safe and quite healthy. Fortunately we live in a safe area of the country. South Carolina is a very good state with a lot of good people. Thanks for inquiring. I hope you are as well.

Subject: Airedale RescueHello, Malcolm. I wanted to touch base and let you know I haven’t forgotten about you. When we last communicated in April we were going to try to find someone who could conduct your home visit for us. Of course, Covid put an end to that, so I wanted to check in with you. Are you still interested in adopting an Airedale? You were planning on moving into a new home; have you done that or are you still living with your son? Do you still have your Papillon?
And, of course, I hope you are healthy and staying safe.
Thank you,
Jmc… -
