09-02-2020: Diane O’Cain asked about adopting BB on FB. I reminded her to send photos of her home. See at the top of post for those photos. There are others, but these are indicative. Plus, I’ve gone over her FB page. They have their female Airedale and she does everything with them, going out on the boat. I’ve moved her to approved/waiting.

        09-01-2020: From Lynlee:’
        Hey Jackie!
Here is what I know. Happy to help with anything else also.
BBs back legs shake a bit from arthritis. She doesn’t seem to be in pain though. She goes up and down stairs every day with no problem. She cannot, however, turn around mid stair and change directions. We lift her in and out of the car because my tailgate is so high.
My older child tries to play with her but BB doesn’t fetch so he gets bored. She loves to tug on her stuffed toys though and Jack plays that with her from time to time.
BB does bark at other dogs in our neighborhood. My brother has a terrier mix and BB doesn’t mind her but that dog does bark and agitate BB. BB backs off but will bark back.
        Standard collar and retractable leash.
        No cat knowledge.
Happy to answer any other questions!!
        Lynlee

JMC: Lynlee, I do have more questions:

Does she have any mobility issues — stiff hips, trouble going up/down the stairs, or jumping into/out of the car?
Does your older child try to play with her?
You said she’s ok with other dogs. When you walk her in the neighborhood, how does she react to dogs that she sees?
What kind of collar or harness & leash does she use?
Has she ever lived with cats; or have you seen how she reacts to cats?

        Thank you for your help.

          From owner’s email on 08-31-2020:
          Hi, Pat.
Thank you so much for the kind words. We live in Peachtree City, Georgia – a suburb about 25 minutes south of the ATL airport.
BB is approximately 9 years old. She is a purebred Airedale that my husband’s grandfather purchased in approximately 2011. He passed away and his wife kept BB until she passed away last October. No one in the family wanted a dog so we took her. Our 13-year-old Weimaraner had just died so we thought it would be a good fit. We then unexpectedly got pregnant and now have two girls under two.
BB had extensive obedience training with Greg’s grandparents and is one of the best-behaved dogs I have ever met. She is house trained and can hang out inside without being in a kennel. She doesn’t tear things up or go in the trash or shred blinds. She just hangs out in her bed! She has never bitten anyone and my middle daughter feeds her treats without her ever being aggressive.
I’ve attached some pictures here. She has her summer cut now – it has been a nightmare finding a groomer who actually does the proper cut. Most people assume she is a golden doodle.
I am a little concerned about signing the release before we ever talk. We are prepared to release her if we feel like this is a good fit – but do I have to sign that before you will talk to us more? I hate to sign her over before I know what her new situation will be.
Let me know if you would like to talk further – we have never ever done something like this and our main concern is she goes to a wonderful home. Thanks so much!

09-01-2020 Owner sent a rabies cert from 10-04-19 and a patient encounter form from the same date when she got DHLPP, bordatella, etc. shots and boarded 3 days.

Reason for giving up Airedale I currently own an Airedale. I am embarrassed to admit it, almost ashamed but it just is not working out. I paid for him from a breeder in MN. It was her first time breeding and only time. I couldn’t have been happier. I paid for very expensive training. When he went to the trainer and stayed and she does many dogs.. But he is the most hyper, defiant, pain in the tail dog. We also rescued a little poodle and they get along perfect and We have no issues at all with the poodle. I want to make sure that I am completely transparent that way when I ask for advice you have all of the facts. I’m not sure if it’s genetic or not, but our Airedale has some aggression issues. He has snapped at my daughter. The vet has instructed that we have to medicate him before we bring him in because he tries to bite their heads off, almost literally. The groomer however has said they’ve never had an issue. He has growled at my sister when she tries to correct him about something. I 1,000% believe that he would thrive and do best with an owner That can devote a lot of time to him. That might could get him into some agility training. Something to keep him completely focused or busy. I don’t know what to do. Right now he has moved outside. I have said my entire life that there’s no way I would ever keep a dog outside because if you’re going to have a dog they deserve all the love and attention and being an inside dog and part of the family. But with the aggression, the defiance, and every time I let him outside he takes off as far as he can go and I have to go track him down, it’s just too much to handle. I can’t risk him biting one of my young children. I’m reaching out to see if there’s any way you can help me find him a suitable home. Someone that’s willing to work with him and help him with the aggression. It’s not out of control I don’t want to paint the picture that he’s trying to attack everybody he sees because that’s absolutely not it at all. He hates the vet. He does not like being reprimanded. I’m reaching out to you instead of putting them in my local paper because that’s the last thing that I want to do. I will keep him before that ever becomes an option and make it work. I’m reaching out to you because you’re an admin on a page especially dedicated to Airedales. please let me know your thoughts please let me know if you can think of anything I can do in the meantime. I’m open for anything
Dog currently lives with: a) number of adults: 2

Dog’s best qualities are: Loyal and so sweet to me. He loves to play and thrives on attention. Eager to learn
Dog’s worst qualities are: VERY vet aggressive!! has growled at sister and pet sitter and has growled and bitten my daughter. he’s insanely hyper.
Has Airedale received any obedience training? If yes, please describe. yes. Shock behavior therapy ARGHH!!!!! Shock collar, the trainer said he was eager to learn and very smart and picked up everything quickly. When she bought Asher her goal was to be with her and go with her and very quickly. Training $2500 expensive. When he has the collar on, he behaves, but when it’s not on, forget it.. Uses it – they don’t keep it on him consistently. Feel bad about shocking him all the time. Then batteries are dead. THEY ARE INCONSISTENT WITH THE COLLAR; I’M SURE THEY’RE INCONSISTENT WITH TRYING TO TRAIN. THIS DOG JUST NEEDS SOMEONE TO TRAIN HIM CONSISTENTLY.
Has dog ever bitten anyone? If yes, please describe when and the circumstances My daughter. she was playing and he bit her. didn’t break the skin, but not willing to find out if that will happen next time

His typical day – when she’s not working, drops kids off, he goes in the kennel and she is normally home by 10:15 till 1:45 and they back in the kennel to go get kids. 1-1/2 to 2 hours and sleep in kennel. Mainly because of new dog who chews. Asher doesn’t mind and he goes to the kennel for napping. They go camping and out on the boat. On a leash he pulls, They use leather, slip knot,Martingale. She doesn’t believe in using a prong collar. (BUT SHE SHOCKS HIM!) . He pulls and goes after squirrels. No day care. Where they live is rural so they don’t walk him. He just goes outside. She doesn’t walk him. Camping he’s on leash. Partly fenced – front fence but back is woods. Fence between her and neighbor, but horse fence. He will take off through the fence and goes to visit 5 pit bulls at a property near them to play.
Veterinarian’s Name, Address and Telephone number. List whose name the records are under. Banfield Veterinarian – 8438714638 She will have Banfield send records.

Daughter is curious, 7 yo, she does things to the poodle and he ignores her, and Asher has constantly seen himself as one of the pack and he wrestles. Her husband comes up and grabs her and daughter has hula hoop and he growled and snapped.
He loves people and meets everyone just fine.

08-30-2020: Spoke to Keri last week at some point. I’m not impressed. She’s a real estate agent but works from home most of the time. They have twins 16 years old and a son 17. They’re all using remote learning for school.

We talked about the pros and cons of an efence. They have a Bichon, Doogie 7 yo from Nashville Humane Society. They’ve
had him 6 years. Doogie is not trained to the efence because he will not try to go anywhere away from them.

Her girls, the twins, had a pet-sitting business for a while and they love big dogs. Doogie is good with other dogs.

She and her husband had a black lab but when the twins were born her parents took him and they decided it was best for him to stay with them.

Her husband’s cousin, Andrea Beasley! (Andrea & Caleb Beasley adopted from ARG) have an Airedale and he loves it. He’s looking forward to having a big dog to walk. (Husband does work away from home daily.)

On a typical day they would get up and let the dog outside, feed them, the family eats breakfast and then they’d walk for a while. The dog would be crated when they’re away from home. They would walk once or twice a day and go to the dog park if the dog liked it. Doogie is crate trained and goes into his crate willingly. He doesn’t sleep in the crate. Doogie is chill about other dogs and isn’t really interested in other people or other dogs. He doesn’t go to daycare.

I told her that her estimate for the annual cost of an Airedale was too low, that they’re looking at upwards of $1000 for a dog the size of a ‘dale.

08-30-2020 – Malcolm sent an email that he doesn’t have a fence (we talked about that) but would keep his ‘dale on a lone line to go outside. He would never tether him outside. Greg has reservations about Malcolm’s age. I told him to go with his gut. Would he leave Gus with Malcolm and son.

08-30-2020: JMC spoke to the Cepulo’s and they definitely want to adopt Zeke, but can’t until Sept. 11, 2020. They are having guests over Labor Day and the woman is afraid of dogs because she was bitten by one as a child.

This is the only incident I’ve seen. She was ferocious but it seemed like she was confused and saw him as a threat. I don’t know how far she was willing to go but she clearly meant business.

I had a Doberman who was otherwise nice but became dangerously aggressive at unpredictable times and for no apparent reason. I don’t think that’s Jana. She obviously had what she considered to be a legitimate reason. Once she disengaged she returned to normal quickly.

Her new family would probably benefit from a trainer or behaviorist.

We’ll plan to take her to Greenville in the morning so we’ll be en route when you call.

                                  Hi Jackie,

I believe Jana has a serious sundowning issue. This evening she was very aggressive toward my husband. She didn’t attack him but he was sitting in a chair she seemed to not recognize him. I was able to lure her away and now she’s fine. To me it looks like sundowning but I’m no expert. Dixie also used to sundown and wake up confused, although she was never aggressive at all.

I’ll let you decide what to do with that information, but I thought you should know.

                                  Jill

08-30-2020 Convo with Jill while she & Ted were driving Jana to Greenville:
I asked her to describe the incident. Jill was on phone on the couch and Ted walked into the room and leaned in to get the phone. Jana was asleep and Ted walked into the room. Jana got up and approached him, growling, then barking, and advancing toward him. Jill stepped between them and got her. Jill thinks this is maybe sundowning. Guarding instinct.

I asked if the room was darker than the room he came from. Yes. So maybe with light behind him, she only saw his shape and, at first, didn’t recognize him. Jill thinks that’s what happened.

Jana loves Ted. He’ll get down on the floor with her and they play. But they discovered she’s afraid of belts. He was getting dressed and reached for his belt and she ran.

                                  I’ll let the Klotzes know.
