Doug and Susan Clanton in Canton, GA want to adopt Blue. We will arrange transport.
April 14, 2023 at 10:50 pm in reply to: 2023 Doug & Susan (deceased) Clanton, Previous Adopter, ADT Exp, Good Fence, No dogs ADOPTING BLUE #30552Had an hour+ convo with Doug Clanton. What a nice man. Retired ortho surgeon. They’ve had Airedales all their married life and he had them from his childhood.
They live on a 15-acre lot with 5 acres fenced. They’ve always made a specific point to keep their Airedales in that 5-acre fenced area. They have a pond in the woods surrounding the fenced area. They walk their ‘dales in those woods but never off leash because they don’t want them getting any ideas about exploring that area. One of his Airedales figured out a way to get into those woods. Fortunately, he was in the woods with a contractor and saw her and found where she had managed to “slither” through a cracked board in the fence. Since then, he walks that fence regularly to make sure there is no way for a dog to get out. Their only Airedale that liked water, Zoe, loved to go down to the pond on leash, then he would let her get into the pond and she loved swimming.
He had his first Airedale when he was 16. Had a beagle & cocker spaniel, His mom had ADTs as a child and they found a litter south of Atlanta. His dad knew the guy. ADTs are full of beans, male puppy 12-16 wk old that the breeder put in a box and gave to them. As they walked to the car, he did a swan dive out of the box, but it didn’t hurt him. Eventually, he had cancer and had to put him down. He was in the Navy in Pensacola, breeder in Auburn, AL. Male pup for his parents. Then a little female puppy. Got both of them. Male pup to his parents. Their first Airedale. Second was a foster from a bounce-back about 9 mos old. Failed fostering. Third and fourth were rescues from Cherokee Co Animal Shelter. 2 purebred ADTs and they got the female. Client who worked for a vet. Had a male dale who snapped at a child. Four in succession, a woman named Jackie in ARG, a female ADT, she and her husband came out with the dale. You can have the female. They then found a male from Marietta. Mac.
Last 2 they got were in 2005-2006, did site visit, female about 2-1/2 yo and backyard breeder’s dog. Rescued her and at the last minute. Mother Sherry Baby& son. She came from a gulag. Lady Asta had been spayed thru ARG. She was about 42 lb and infested with parasites and she had HW. They had a great vet who took care of her. They made her food. She trained her pup Django, spin around and chase, she’d roll him. She had heart issues, CHD. Six months before she died, she had a cough. She’d get better then worse. He just recently died at 14 y 3 mos. Django had gone downhill from age. He got to point where both of them had autoimmune disorders. Hemolytic anemia. Hearing bad and vision getting worse, just old age. Finally, he had a couple of strokes. Go outside and didn’t know where he was.
Maybe we shouldn’t have another Airedale.(I’ll edit this to make sense later. Long day.)
I recommend we approve them with no home visit. They’ve lived in their home since before they adopted from us so have had a home visit.)

Hi Jackie,
Thanks for your kindness and support with Hampton! Attached are all the invoices we have from our vet, Four Paws Veterinary Hospital as well as from PetMeds and CVS for his medications. You’ll notice on one of the invoices the $500 you placed on our account early on.Our plan currently is to continue him on the new antibiotic for a few more days and then also put a little pressure on our vet to get more information from NC State Vet School. We’ll follow her guidance for now but may have to look elsewhere. We’ll keep you posted on what the next steps will be for him.
Thanks again,
Maggie and John09-05-22
Ladies,
Today we received the check you sent to us for Hampton’s care. Thank you very much, it is very appreciated!! He is on the new antibiotic regime and so far this week, he is doing well. We truly hope that this continues but we plan to follow up with our vet this week regarding NC State or other suggestions she may have to put an end to these cysts. We will keep you all informed.Again, thanks for your support and concern for Hampton!
Best,
John and Maggie02-04-23
Hi Jackie,
Hope you’re doing well! It’s been many months since we communicated and I thought it’s time to drop you a note about our little guy, Hampton. He’s doing great! He remains a sweet, lovable guy and his health has improved tremendously. In mid-December we made a trip to Mt. Pleasant, SC to the Southeast Veterinary Dermatology Clinic to see Dr. Terri Bonenberger. She diagnosed him with Interdigital Nodular Pododermatitis (pressure-induced), as well as atopic dermatitis. She described the foot lesions as severe interdigital furuncles similar to in-grown hairs caused by weight bearing/pressure. She said it is not curable, but it is manageable. She said they are not allergy related.
At this appointment, Dr. Bonenberger did not go into his food and environmental allergies, because she said his feet were much more important. She did another culture of the paws for bacteria and again found infection, but this time it was a resistant bacteria. He was placed on Linezolid for 4 weeks. He was also put on Cyclosporine Modified daily as well as a short course of Methylprednisolone. He did great on these meds and actually went 39 days without a cyst! Previously he would get one every 10 days or so. He remains on the Cyclosporine and the plan is to use the methylprednisolone short term when he gets a cyst.
Now that his paws are doing better, we have been able to get him out walking more and he’s going about a mile and a half everyday. We’ve been working with a trainer to get him to stop barking at other dogs when we walk. He has such a wicked bark it scares everyone. The trainer said he is a dominant, insecure male who just doesn’t know how to interact. He’s not vicious, but wants to dominate the other dogs. He obviously wasn’t socialized as a pup. We’ve been to the dog park twice now and he has done fine, as long as we are observant of the situation and monitor his behavior.
Attached are a couple pictures to show you just how great he looks! We are so happy that he’s part of our family. Thanks for all your help and we’ll continue to keep you posted.

It is great to hear from you, Maggie! Hampton looks wonderful. I’m so happy you have a diagnosis and treatment plan that seems to be working for him! I’ve not heard of interdigital nodular pododermatitis, but after reading about it, it seems to describe exactly what this sweet Aire-boy has been suffering with for so long. I did not find a reference to it being pressure-induced, except, possibly walking on hard surfaces or concrete. ? Is that what she thought? The fact that it’s been intractable and misdiagnosed is not surprising given the many causes and indications of the disease.Regardless, ARG still wishes to reimburse you for the visit with the dermatologist and his medications. Please let us know how much you’ve paid. I so hope this remains effective treatment for him and he’s able to express his Airedalicity by taking lots of fun walks and playing with other dogs!
thank you for living this boy so much!
Jackie

Hi, Maggie & John. The current issue of Whole Dog Journal has an article on Interdigital Cysts that reminded me to connect with you! The article doesn’t go into the complicated nodular pododermatitis Dr. Bonenberger diagnosed in Hampton. How is Hampton? Did you see Dr. Bonenberger again in early March? I hope the treatment has kept the infection at bay. Please send us an update and let us know if we can help.
Happy Spring!

Hi Pat, this is a copy of the text I sent to Christina after seeing her post about Pearl recently.
Anne Daletski
***********Hi Christina. I’m writing about my foster, Harry (formerly Moose). Reading about Pearl, I wonder if she may be a better fit for me than Harry is. I love him but he’s so wild and strong that I don’t know how successful I’ll be with his education and growth. I hate to throw in the towel. I’m not a quitter by nature. But I do want what’s best for this amazing, sweet, high energy, destructive dog. His need to chew everything in sight is exhausting. I’ve removed every branch and twig that has fallen in my yard and tonight he was in the process of removing canes from a rose bush. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to get him to stop long enough for me to get it from him. Fortunately he couldn’t resist an invitation to come in from outside to go to the kitchen where treats are.
I recently had a home visit with Eddie Miller in Marion (about 20 miles from me) and wonder if a man like him might be a better fit for this strong dog. Eddie seemed to he more interested in a younger dog and Harry is only 14 months old. My previous rescue, Ruby, was 8 years old when I got her.
At 5 years old, Pearl is probably less energetic than Harry is and probably has behavior better matched to my wants and needs. I live alone and have no family, so Pearl would be a spoiled only child here if I rehomed Harry and welcomed Pearl into my home instead.
I’m interested in your thoughts on this idea. If you think it would be too hard on Harry to be rehomed, I certainly will continue to work with him. I love this boy but he’s not easy.
Thanks for reading this long text.

March 28, 2023 at 7:45 pm in reply to: 23-05 Boone, Male-Neutered, 6-7 yrs, w/Cindy Green-training #30449The vet saw Boone yesterday. He has lost 11 pounds in less than 1 month. The vet could see baby heartworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. Aside from worms, it could be pancreatic issues causing weight loss. Should get blood work back today 03-28-2023.
Boone is also very calm considering his age, but it could be because he’s not feeling good.
Blood work came back ALL within normal limits. Nothing wrong except for the worms. The meds they gave him yesterday should do the job; he’ll need to be treated again in 2 weeks and Chris has the medication.

Roxie is probably going to be a cuddler. Boone is also very calm considering his age, but it could be because he’s not feeling good.
Set up Pilots N Paws to move Roxie to Barbara Bonfield in Ocala, FL.
I asked Chris to have the vet send us their medical records as well as invoices. We got no med records before.

March 21, 2023 at 3:14 pm in reply to: Re-Activate: Lauren & Josh Cannon, Asheville, NC, ADT exp., 1-yo child #30416Home visit by Susan Harper on March 19, 2023:
Hey Jackie,
I had a great visit with Lauren and Josh today. I think they are EXCELLENT candidates for a rescue Airedale. They are savvy dog people and have a lot of experience. One of the things I liked is that they didn’t give up on Beverly and spent the time and money to work with her. Lauren has experience fostering and they have been a part of animal transport for another rescue group. They are really missing having a pet. Both of them grew up with dogs.
They live in a cute neighborhood in downtown Asheville and have a fenced back yard. They have a sweet home and clearly take really good care of it. They have a one year old daughter so the decor is very toddler friendly but the house was very nice. They have made a sweet home. They basically allow their pet free roam of the house but are able to use baby gates to limit where the dog goes when they need. And there is a dog door into the back yard.
They were very aware of the importance of finding a fit with their daughter – but also made it clear that they understood it was their responsibility to take it slow and oversee all interactions between the dog and the child. They are open to working with a trainer and we talked about the program I have my 8 month old enrolled in. They were curious about the specifics of the 3 dales Bob and I got from rescue orgs. All three were just over a year old when we got them and have had traumatic backgrounds that made them a challenge at first (flight risks etc). They would love a younger dog (just to have more time with the dog) but will welcome an older dog too.
I am very confident that they would be supportive, loving pet owners who understand that a rescue dog needs time to relax into the new situation they find themselves in. I would absolutely leave my dogs with them…. and in fact, I invited them to come out and get an Airedale fix at my house while they were waiting.
Please send me any specific questions you have… I appreciated the opportunity to go visit with them!
I think an Airedale in need of a home would be really lucky to land with them.
Susan
I’ve notified the Cannons that they are approved.

Pearl did very well at doggy daycare. There were only 3 or 4 other dogs there and she played very nicely and appropriately with a similar sized doodle dog. She was worn out when she got home 😊. Pearl loves being with us and going for walks and chasing the tennis ball in our big backyard. But I think Pearl needs another dog to run around with several times a day. Our 5 mile walks and 30 minute tennis ball sessions are not enough for this sweet, but active girl. Max, on the other hand, loves a 5 mile walk and then is happy spending the rest of the day on the couch with some good belly rubs. I am learning a lot in this process.Pearl is not reactive, does not have a strong prey drive, loves to fetch tennis balls, does not bark much, does very well in her crate and LOVES to be near us. The things she needs to work on are jumping on people, counter surfing, chewing anything she can reach when bored and pooping on a leash.
I know I will be so sad to give Pearl to another home, but she needs a home with another active dog to play with.
03-08-23
I am so sad too. I love Pearl – she is just a lot for Max and my husband. And I think she would do well if she had another dog in the family to play with.
A tired Airedale is often a well behaved Airedale:) I am looking forward to seeing how she does tomorrow at doggy daycare. I will let you all know.03-07-23
Thank you. I am very sorry too. It makes me sad, Pearl is a sweet girl. She is not aggressive or reactive, just very high energy with very little training. She does pretty well on a leash- she actually pulls more to follow a smell than she pulls at other passing dogs. She does not have a strong prey drive- no problems with squirrels running by. She also does not bark a lot.
Let me know if you have any other questions. I did sign her up to go to doggy daycare for a half day on Thursday. The woman who I used for training with my other dogs does a small daycare at her house. I am curious to see what she thinks of Pearl and how Pearl does with the other dogs there. I will let you know.02-26-23
After a week, Pearl seems more relaxed and happy here. She didn’t bark for the first 4 or 5 days, but she has found her voice, although she is not really a big barker thus far:) She and Max do well when my husband or son can help me take the dogs on a walk. We can go for 1.5 hours and they don’t pay a whole lot of attention to each other. They are not doing well in our house and I keep them separated. I have tried putting each dog in a crate and letting the other sniff and walk around as Pat suggested. Pearl will bark and bounce around Max when he is in the crate. Max does not want to go near the crate when Pearl is in it. I think the problem is mostly Max. Pearl wants to play and Max does not and she gets in his space and does not read the cues he is giving her and continues to try and play. He often won’t eat if he thinks she is near and kind of cautiously just looks at his bowl of food. We NEVER feed them together or have food out when one could see the other.Thankfully, Pearl has not tried to get out of our backyard. We are always out there with her and she loves to run around and chase a tennis ball. She only poops when loose in the backyard and not on a walk (even a very long walk) but we are managing that. She does ok on a leash – she can pull very hard, but she can also walk nicely. She is a little skittish- I don’t think she has been exposed to very much (school buses, lawn blowers, brick mailboxes, etc) – poor girl.
Sometimes she is sweet and calm – right now she is just laying in the kitchen with me 😊(Max is upstairs), but other times she is a crazy lady and hard to manage. She can get very excited and she will wrap her arms around me and get very mouthy. I tell her no and push her down, but then it is a game and she jumps back up and continues. She is stronger than I remember Annabelle being. She can make me uncomfortable. She is not aggressive, but she is persistent and rough. Maybe she makes Max umcomfortable too.
That’s my update. What do you all think?
02-21-23
I am sending you all a couple of fun, short videos of Pearl. She is getting more comfortable at our house and seems very happy to be able to play! She is a very busy girl:). She loves pats!!Max still does not want her to get too close to him. He will snarl and bear his teeth. She will back off, but then she comes right back. I think she just wants to play and he either doesn’t trust her or doesn’t want to play.
We can’t get her to poop on a leash walk. She’ll go when loose in our backyard, but thus far won’t go when we are walking her. She is fine peeing while leash walking. I think she will try and get out of our fenced yard, so we stay out there with her and monitor her. She sticks her head through the metal bars and looks like she might try and dig under it.
A couple times she has wrapped her arms around my arm or my husband’s leg. We both pushed her down and told her no. This made me a little uncomfortable. I am not familiar with this behavior. Not sure if she is playing or what.
She is a sweet, smart and affectionate girl and I do think she wants to please.
Just a day 3 update for you all.
02-19-23
We introduced Pearl and Max yesterday by going for a walk with the 4 of us. They did ok. And we took them out together last night for the last call walk. Max and I are big walkers- we both love long walks! We can definitely do more 4some walks today. We are not comfortable putting them in our yard together at this point.02-19-23
I meant to say we have had to pull Her off of Him several times.02-19-23
Yesterday was a very long day for Pearl! The ARG volunteers are amazing and so kind to help Pearl on her journey. She is sweet and affectionate with us. But she and our dog Max are not getting along very well so far. I think it is both of them. She is a lot and wants to play and he doesn’t want to play with her. He will tell her he doesn’t want her so close and she appropriately backs off, but then she comes right back. She is bigger than he is and we have had to pull him off of her several times. I think he is afraid of her. Do you all have any thoughts?Prior to the above emails and prior to them picking up Pearl, we have 18 emails from Marci asking questions about Pearl.
I suspect that Marci will never be able to accept any Airedale that isn’t perfect; and she’ll find something that is not perfect.

I spoke to Christie Wild and she will be happy to do a 2-hr consult/training session with Anne and Harry. She charges $375 but I think I can get her to give us a discount. We talked about it a bit, but she was at work and we didn’t get down to the nitty-gritty. We can schedule this online and I will do that when I talk to Anne.
