Oct ?? 2020: I had a long conversation with Suzanne Sloan and found her to be knowledgeable about Airedales and ready to adopt. She lives alone, has 4 grown sons, lots of friends and neighbor support. She currently has an elderly male Cocker Spaniel and is looking toward the future when she’ll be ready for an Airedale. Her dogs are never outside without her, although she has a fence. She’s an avid walker and gardener and loves for her dogs to be outside with her or with her whatever she’s doing. She has a housekeeper and gardener.

She tutors HS students in French 3-4 afternoons per week so the dog would need to be ok with new folks coming in the house.

She sounds like a delightful person who would take excellent care of an Airedale.

11-18-2020 ISW Julie: Zeus is wonderful. They’ve had to separate him and Mattie and not allowing them to see each other. Moved her to the laundry room and rotate them every 2 hours. When they tried to introduce them, he did great with the other dogs and played well. Mattie was biting at his face and thought he wanted to play and he chased her, he bit her and has bitten her twice. So, they talked to a behaviorist that they’ve used for Mattie and have free consults for life (!) and she wants them to leave them separate for now, but will then try to introduce them on leash later on and let them get close to each other and calm before allowing them to meet off-leash. I suggested she and Jamie walk them with the dogs on the outside and walk a ways and then let them sniff.

Julie is Teaching Mattie leave it and watch me and then they’ll reintroduce them.
Zeus is desensitized over her barking. He does get nippy with Jamie when she comes home from work and her skin is thin. I said no nipping, no teeth on skin, and she’s working on it.

She already loves him, he’s an angel!

            Zeus Transport:
Hello, Airedale Lovers. We are so happy that Zeus is going to his new home. He’s leaving a home where he has been loved and had a happy life and going to a new life on a farm with two moms who will love him and he’ll have other dogs to play with.

I have copied Pat Hairston above. She is one of our core members of ARG and she will be monitoring this transport because I will be on vacation beginning tomorrow! The BEACH!

            SAFETY
Regular safety – PLEASE USE YOUR CHILD LOCKS so that Zeus cannot accidentally open a window or door! (It has happened!)

Please be aware of Zeus when opening car doors, transferring him from person to person, always making sure a hand is on the leash. We recommend that you close the door on his leash so that 4-6 inches are outside the door. That keeps him safer inside and it allows you to have your hand on the leash before you even open the door.
Remember that he may be afraid of this new experience and being so long in the car. Unless necessary, remain in the car until the transfer occurs; when opening car doors, ensure that the leash is secured. When allowing potty breaks, ensure that collar/leash(s) are tight for no escape; be aware of surroundings – even a plastic bag in the wind may spook a pup in unfamiliar settings. Do not let him off-leash at any time.

COVID safety – please use COVID-19 precautions. Please wear a mask when meeting the next volunteer and employ social distancing. One example may be for the arriving Driver to get Zeus out of their car and the accepting driver unlocks their car to allow Zeus into it. After touching the leash from the other driver, please use your hand sanitizer.

Please bring along a bowl and a bottle of water and offer water to Zeus at each handoff. We want to be sure that he stays hydrated on the trip, but don’t be overly concerned if he doesn’t drink at each handoff. he might also appreciate a small treat or two.

All times are approximate, allowing time for Zeus to sniff around, go potty, and have a drink of water. (Humans, too.) Please call the next driver if you see that you are running behind or run into any problems. And, please text me when you have handed Zeus over to the next person.

Please take photos at each hand-off and text them to

At times they get along and other times they tolerate each other. Mild aggression and dominance play that is easily distracted  Actually she is better at listening than Elsa. We’re still limiting their contact cause they get so worked up. Daisy is used to having a lot more freedom i.e. being left in the yard on her own. on the other hand when she’s around one of us she constantly wants to be petted. Very loving pup. has not been to vet yet, but we have contacted them. Seems everyone is so busy  but they are finding time to get us in. I think her somewhat stiff hips will benefit from losing a couple of pounds.  But agree, she’s not as overweight as she appeared, but she is getting more exercise with Elsa around, plus we walk them. She has a very calm disposition with humans. She did well with her grooming session We lucked out and found a great guy at Petco. Cutting her nails is an issue. Defensive and even a bit aggressive.   Kevin will be working the Dremel with her. Elsa used to scream, literally. Now, no issue. Kevin’s good.

Morning, Chris. Yes, I did receive this yesterday but hadn’t looked at my email. Daisy looks alert and happy in that movie! She doesn’t look overweight after being groomed. She’s a pretty girl. Tall.

Are she and Elsa still getting along?

I can’t remember if she had a vet visit scheduled for this week. Let me know.

Thank you for taking good care of this girl.

Hi Jackie, thank you for the information on Pat that sounds good. Rex is an exceptional dog he is lazer focused and doesn’t seem to shy away from anything. I see something special in this dog I may contact Pat but not sure we could afford her training program. We think that we are going to try to work this all out and see before we give up on him, he deserves that. Thank you again for your help if it doesn’t work out I will get in touch again.

Hi, Sherry. You can certainly withdraw Rex from ARG. We will not place him with anyone without your approval. I understand your wish to place him with someone you know. I would urge you to take a look at our application and approval process https://airedalerescuegroup.com/adoption-process/
to understand what things we believe are important before we will adopt to anyone. After the application, one of our volunteers contacts the potential adopter for an interview; if all is good at that point, we arrange for one of our volunteers to conduct a home visit to see everywhere the Airedale will live – inside and outside. We obtain vet records on the applicant’s other animals to make sure they have been kept up to date on necessary vaccines, been kept on heartworm and flea/tick preventative, and treated for any illness or injury. And, we turn down people who we deem unqualified to have an Airedale.

Yes, Rex does have a lot of ability; he is an Airedale and they are very smart. Typically, hunting, search and rescue, and/or law enforcement dogs begin their training at a very early age. Even agility dogs begin with very strong training in obedience, using praise, food, or play to motivate the dogs, never anything aversive or punitive such as electronic collars. We do not adopt to anyone who uses electronic collars, nor will we pay for training using e-collars for dogs we have placed.

One of our volunteers, Pat Hairston (copied above) is a trainer who has trained service dogs for nearly 17 years. She and her husband, Rick, have worked with at least 8 Airedales or Airedale-mixes and all ended with the same result: a career change to being a pet. Each of these dogs was between 6 months to 2 years when training began. The Hairston’s use positive training methods with treat rewards, play, and positive motivation. Not one qualified as a service dog. The reasons; high prey drive, timidity, fear of new situations, inability to focus on a task, to name a few. Each time we worked closely with ARG to find the right adoptive home for the dog released from training. The Hairston’s love the breed and have had Airedales since the late 80’s but have realized the limitation of a rescued Airedale as a working dog. Currently, they have 3 Airedales adopted from ARG. I’m sure Pat would be happy to speak to you. Her number is 910-200-5890.

You made the decision to add Rex to your family and you need to feel good about where he is going. ARG has helped to rehome several thousand dogs in the last 20 years with less than a 10% return; we are that careful. ARG wants to ensure an Airedale like Rex does not go to a home that is not prepared for a dog like him. Our desire is to place an Airedale in the right home for the dog.

Hi Jackie, all that sounds good but without seeing it I can’t say I’d feel comfortable. I’d like to see if we can withdraw Rex from the rescue since it hasn’t gone any further than this ? I’d feel better if we could find someone we know that could take him he has so much ability to do anything like agility, hunting, police work etc. I had such big dreams for him to do something even search and rescue. I know you understand where I’m coming from. I’m sure these people are nice but I still hesitate. I don’t know if I can give him up ! Feeling very torn.

11-01-2020 Lauren & Ian will adopt Rex.

11-02-2020: Sherry Tate doesn’t think the Schneiders’ home is a good one because they already have 3 dogs plus far animals and don’t think Rex would get enough attention. JMC wrote back to tell them all the good things about the Schneiders, but Sherry wrote back that she had big dreams for him – like police work, search and rescue, agility. Sheesh!

Lauren understood having been in Mastiff rescue.

And, OMG, thank you for the alert of the bad website issue.

However, if you put in our correct URL, the page comes up fine.

I’ve attached a word doc of the Relinquishment Form but it would be better if they fill it out online: https://airedalerescuegroup.com/airedale-relinquishment/.

Morning, Chris. Thanks for the update. She sounds like a really sweet Aire-girl. The 5-7 lb is probably Covid weight; at least that’s what mine is 😌.

You had a vet look at her missing molar but haven’t taken her to your vet yet? Was it another vet at the owner’s clinic? ARG will, of course, pay for her medical care while you’re fostering her. Just call when you’re ready to check out from your vet and I’ll give them our CC.

It’s great that she let you, a relative stranger, trim her face. She must be a trusting girl who’s been treated well. Still, nearly 9 and being sent away. Cut off my right arm. Geez.

I look forward to a photo after her full cut and to getting her records.

Thank you, Chris & Kevin, for your love of Airedales!

                    Hi there.
Day 2. She seems to be a sweetheart. Plays well with Elsa. Elsa as a 2 yo gets rough, Daisy sets normal growl “enough” limits. Kevin takes them on walks. She’s fine on a leash. Better than Elsa 🤔.
I started trimming her face this am with scissors, no problem. I don’t trust the local groomer to cut face as no experience w Airedale cut, but we are taking her for an overall cut this Tuesday for the rest of her body. Her long hair will kill my clippers. 🙄
So far she’s delightful. Big lovable lap dog. Overweight, so limiting snacks, bought “Blue” light. She needs to drop 5-7 #. She is listed as 65#

Kevin will send paperwork. Turns out she’ll be 9 in December. Medical records don’t reveal any problems. (Heartworm negative) however, former owner‘s father-in-law is her Vet so likely not all reflected. (ie frequency of heart worm prevention puchased, etc ). I noticed she’s missing a molar, so asked the vet to look it over and it’s gone, but no rotting, we are thinking to have our own vet look her over for an objective medical exam.
She’s going to make someone a lovely pet. Elsa has too much energy for her. But they are having fun. So are we. Will continue with updates.

10-30-2020: This good ol’ boy loves to talk. He seems like a good guy. Lives alone, 68 years old, hasn’t had a dog in 11 years because he was traveling as a truck driver for years. Some of that time, depending on the length of his trip, he’d take his Airedale with him. His first ‘dale was when he was 8 years old. All of his dales lived long lives. His last was a female who had a litter of pups and shortly afterwards got ill. He had to take her to an ER vet and she was anemic. They had to transfuse her and keep her from Saturday night till Monday afternoon and it was quite expensive.

He’s in good health, had only spent one night in a hospital in his life until last year (when he was 17 he got food poisoning from oysters). Last year he had a hernia and a little heart issue, but it’s not anything that the dr is concerned about. He gets up every day at 5 goes to work, but comes home around 1 or 2. Sometimes goes in later and works regular day. If he’s gone all day, his girlfriend who lives very close by and owns a liquor store right behind his house can come over to take care of his dog. He does the same for her if she’s too busy at work and he’ll go over and get her dog and walk him. But his Airedale does not need to get along with her dogs because they do NOT live together.

He talked about one of his Airedales being so good that people would be amazed because she would stay in his truck when he went in anywhere and she wouldn’t move, wouldn’t try to get away, wouldn’t bark at people. I told him our contract requires that his Airedale never ride in the bed of a pickup truck. He said he kept her on a chain where she couldn’t move to the sides. I told him his ‘dale would have to ride in the cab of the truck or in a crate if in the bed of a truck. He agreed to that.

We talked about how ‘dales can’t be trusted to be off-leash and he related a couple of stories that illustrated that. He would not let his ‘dale run.

His fence – as I understood it – is not complete. He put up fencing between his house and his shed and wants to cover it so that it is shaded but it is not complete. Frankly, he talks fast and jumps from one subject to another… IDK I told him he could show the HV volunteer what he intended to do. His Airedale will absolutely live in the house. He has a 3-br, 2-1/2 bath house, but keeps part of it closed off because he doesn’t use it. Otherwise, the Airedale will be allowed everywhere in the house that he is. It will not sleep in bed with him.

Called his personal reference, Rick Shillinglaw, who said Joe is just a really good guy who “loved his Airedales and would take good care of one. He’s got a nice little place over there, it’s probably paid for, he’s got no financial problems, just an all-round good guy.”

                          10-30-2020 Julie interviewed these folks:
I hope we have a female less than 3 years that could go to these people.
Great vet record, everyone UTD vax, seen yearly, good end of life care.
Appreciates all the time and effort the welshie breeder put into making sure they were a good fit for the dog. Understands it…
Fenced in yard, young – early 50’s, dog park, walking trails, crate training etc.
She is a #1 adopter candidate.

JMC suggested Corrie Anderson for HV.

Hello, Stephanie & Drew. You are confirmed to meet at Mary Hayes Barber Holmes Park in Pittsboro at 12:30 tomorrow. Stephanie will be driving a greyTahoe; Drew will be in a silver Toyota Highlander. Try to find a place away from the in/out traffic. Please use covid precautions: wear masks, social distance as much as possible. It will be a good idea for both of you to walk with Nina, let her sniff & relieve herself, let Stephanie have the leash (kept at about 6 ft) and Stephanie can remove her mask so Nina can see her facial expression. Stephanie can continue walking while Drew puts her supplies into Stephanie’s car. Drew, you can then put Nina into her car, close the door & walk away. Don’t make a fuss over Nina that would cause her anxiety. It’s just a normal goodbye. Please let me know if you have questions.

Jackie, thank you for agreeing that ARG will take care of any findings our vet may recommend as a result of the fractures.

We will be able to meet when he can on Friday at that location. I will bring a leather 6′ leash for her.

We are very excited to bring her home.

                              Thank you, Stephanie

Hi, Stephanie. I received Nina’s medical records and have attached them for you. What stands out to me is that she has “slab fractures” on 2 teeth. I’ve googled this and was concerned that the owners didn’t have the dental cleaning and potential extractions done. (See https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/fractured-teeth-in-dogs.)

I asked Drew about this and he told me that the vet gave Nina antibiotics and that she has had no further problems as a result. (They discovered the issue when she began dropping food from her mouth and then eating it small bites at a time. They say she no longer does this.)

I will commit to you that ARG will cover her exam, dental cleaning, and extraction if your vet believes that should be done. In fact, it appears that she is due for a heartworm test. I’m not concerned about the past-due distemper/parvo vax; at her age, she probably has long-term immunity.

Drew can meet you Friday and has suggested Pittsboro as a halfway point. On Google Maps, I found Mary Hayes Barber Holmes Park ( https://tinyurl.com/Pittsboro-Park), just off Hwy 64. It looks like it’s right on the way and appears safe and clean.

Nina will have her collar and retractable leash (ugh). Please bring a regular 6-ft leash with you. She rides well in the car and has never been known to bolt or run away. He says she may be hesitant to get in the car with new people – understandable – but treats will probably help that. She will also have her bed, blanket, and toys.

Drew is not sure at this point what time he can meet you, but will get back to me on that.

                              Will Friday work for you?
                              Jackie
