11-27-2020: I spoke to Jean and really liked her. She sounds enthusiastic, healthy (she said no one believes she’s 68!), and happy. Loves her 2 dogs (both female/spayed) but misses the personality of an Airedale. She’s had 4:
First one Snudley a big 90 lb boy. First one. Learning lesson. Ate their couch, those kinds of things. Was in Wisconsin. Breeder in Wisconsin and they stopped breeding and then Bentley from breeder in IL.
Then Duncan until 12 and he passed.
Bentley from breeder in IL He was like the antichrist; if he could get into anything he did. 7 years and developed leukemia. Transfused and couldn’t save him.
Teddy from the humane society. Someone bought and didn’t know dales; had never been groomed. He was about 1 year old. He was the best dog ever. He & Bentley were best buds ,Teddy was 13 years old when he died.
      They rescued a Rottie, GSD,
All the dogs could just run. Then she got a divorce and lived in a condo and now she has nearly 1 acre and has fenced in area. Go for walks everyday. Takes them for walks near the boundary waters in Tel Plains. 2 cats and 3 feral cats.

Bedlington/wire dachshund mix. The groomer bred bedlingtons and wire doxies and had a mixed litter. Maeve built like doxy but fur of the Bedlington very silky and silver.

Moved to TN – retired nurse and have friends in TN and the taxes are less. She lived in a condo but it wasn’t good for a ‘dale.

She now has a 1400sq ft house and 1 acre.
Her vet is 5 min away
If she has to go to Maryville, it’s an hour
      Madisonville is 20 minutes.

Hi, Jean. It was very nice speaking to you just now and hearing about your four previous Airedales and your current dogs. Just in our short conversation, I heard loud and clear how much you love animals and, in particular, that you want to have another Airedale.

Your home with a large fenced yard, your habit of walking 1-1/2 miles morning and evening in a heavily wooded area, the lack of children in your circle, your experience with Airedales and other dogs all tell me that you would be a great Airedale mom.

We talked about Teddy, the 3-year-old male who was relinquished because he bit some children and whose previous owners are being sued over that. You immediately said you would love to have him. I’ve attached photos of him. Before I get too far ahead of myself, we normally would require a home visit before you could be approved.

We do not have anyone near you in Tellico Plains. Therefore, would you be so kind as to take photos of your home and yard? We’d like to see the front of your house with the entryway, inside in every room where the Airedale or your current dogs are allowed, outside with a view of the back door, and good photos of your fenced area. Please also include a photo of Maeve & Maxine. (BTW, your vet’s office gave you a good referral.)

I will put together some information on Teddy and forward that a little later. And, I look forward to getting your photos.

Thank you, Jean, for considering a rescued Airedale.

      ____________
Good vet referral. She keeps her animals up to date and does regular checkups for her dogs and her cats.

        Hello and Happy Thanksgivings,

I have started a search for a companion dog and landed on the Airedale based on the traits and personality. I have owned dogs in the past, have an empty nest, looking for a companion for walks and day trips hiking.

My preference is a young adult or adult but recognize a pup may be where I have to start.

Will you please add me to your contact list if you run across or know of a dog that would be available?

        I reside in Charlotte NC.

        Thanks in advance,

11-23-2020: Had a nice convo with Mark Andersen. He’s single, 63, looking to retire in a couple of years, works from home except 1 day a week when he makes sales calls and is gone a typical 8-9 hour day. He has not had an Airedale but has had 2 WFTs with his partner, Scott Lindsey, who died in 2008 at age 44 of cancer. After Scott died, Mark gave the male WFT Baxter (who was Scott’s dog) to Scott’s mom. Mark was having to travel out of town a lot and was never home and had to give up the female WFT who was 10. He gave her to a veterinarian who wanted a settled, older dog who could come to work with him. He drove Abby to Asheville to the vet and cried all the way there and back. He has not had another dog since then.

He cannot imagine another situation that would require him to give up a dog, because he is ready to retire, he is going to stay in his neighborhood, which is very open and friendly and supportive. He wants a dog to walk with daily, which he already does, into the trails in the woods around his home. There are lots of kids (ages 4-9 or so) and dogs in his neighborhood and people out and about. He wants to sit on his front porch with his dog on leash and greet passersby. He’s physically in good health and able to handle a large Airedale. He wants a male and 70-80 lbs is not a problem.

We talked about training and he wants our recommendation for trainers in the area if needed. He wants a dog that will be mannerly and gets along with people and other dogs.

He does not have a fence currently but we talked about how important it is for him to have a fence particularly with his home surrounded by woods. He plans to build a fence before he gets a dog. He is not in a hurry and realizes this may take a while.

11-20-2020 Renea previously adopted Molly then Finnegan. Finnegan just died at 7 years old from a splenic tumor – hemangiosarcoma.

I spoke to her about Teddy but then withdrew that recommendation because Teddy doesn’t really play well with small dogs. He needs a dog his own size. She was ready and willing to take him even with his bite history.

Renea works part-time in restaurant management and waiting tables. She said she loves that. She walks the trails close to her home and keeps her dog with her all the time inside and outside. She works a lot in her garden. She’s active and lives alone.

                    11-19-2020:
                    Jackie,
Other than providing info on how to apply I did not follow up with Ed as I did not want him to feel pressured. Perhaps his wife was not as excited as he was about adopting a new dog right now.
Teddy is a very different dog than the one that arrived. He is still a bit cautious with strangers particularly men. However his caution is limited to just choosing not to approach. He does not alert or bark when strangers have come to the home. He is completely neutral with delivery people coming to our home .He warms up quickly to anyone when treats are involved.
I think he would enjoy another dog. He seems happiest when he is part of the group. He is a very mannerly player . He is very sweet with my little one Giddy, but very cautious with her . I believe he was “corrected” out of playing with the Yorkies in his previous home. Thus I think he would enjoy a dog closer to his size . He loves to play chase as do Finn and Grace . He has a fairly submissive personality so even when he struts his maleness with Finn he is never pushy .
He loves to go for a good run on the property and then is very happy to be a ‘hang-out guy”. He is super obedient and obsessive about his daily routine.
I find Teddy to be a sweet, easy dog these days.
I am sure it is tough to find someone up to taking a dog with a bite rap . I believe one of the recent dogs adopted out by ARG had chased and bitten a child of the surrendering family so I have hope there is someone out there.

                    Cindy

I have just read over everything you’ve told us about Teddy. He is a sad case. Do you think he’d be best with another dog as a companion? You said at one point that he seemed more unsure of men than women.

Thank you for taking the time to consider. If the Nash family decides to proceed I was impressed that they have adopted dogs on multiple occasions that were probably surrendered/abounded due to issues . I also think Teddy’s issues were due to frustration not true aggression. However he may struggle in a home where he is confined or where he is left to run a fence line to expend energy. I do think he would be a fabulous farm dog.
It has taken a long time time to de-stress this dog. I have not worked with a dog as shut down as Teddy but the dog that has emerged is fabulous ! Really hope there is someone out there for him because he brings so much when he decides you are his person.
We will see how this progresses.

                        Thank you,

I agree that adoption to just anyone is in Georgia has a risk because of the annoyed neighbors. Normally I would pass on Georgia residents.

The mitigating factors for this family are

                        1. Teddy has not exhibited any tendency to act out and has been evaluated and cared for by a professional for a long period of time.
                        2. There has been no forward progress from the complaining neighbor parties
                        3. The GA family approached Cindy and is aware of the prior issue and willing to take Teddy on with coaching by Cindy’s per usual.
4 The GA family is dog experienced and perhaps has a veterinarian in the family. To be verified

Therefore I think we should conduct due diligence with this family and see if we have a match. It will be the same matching process as for all dogs. Of course there is a possibility Teddy may be returned as with all dogs

                        Other thoughts?

                        Bay.

                          Jackie,
I am following up on the email below. Teddy was great during his week of boarding . He was excellent during the drop off and pickup process. Really a calm, well behaved dog that keeps his focus on you – no concern about other people or dogs. I have been really impressed with this dog. I think he could make someone such a great companion. Any word on resolution of the court case such that he can be placed?

I hope you are enjoying your anniversary vacation and Happy Anniversary.

Out of curiosity I did look up the Georgia laws . It states if via legal action a dog is proven to be dangerous or viscous then by law that dog cannot be transferred anywhere except to a facility for euthanasia. Unless there is a lot more to Teddy’s history I don’t believe the incidents as reported meet the described criterion . Also seems anyone that takes him is liable for harboring a dangerous dog .
The Nashes may or may not proceed or meet the adoption criterion but I believe at some point ARG will have to decide if he can be adopted out. I also think it will be a rare person willing to take on a dog with such history.

Just thoughts . Wish I had the answers.

                          Cindy

We have heard nothing further from Albany animal control, plaintiffs’ attorney, nor the original owners.

If we adopt to the Nashes, and then are required by law enforcement or an official of the court to reveal where Teddy is, are we prepared to lie? If they require that we prove where he is…?

                          Barbara, you are the arbiter.

                          Hi Cindy,

Jackie is away this week enjoying much needed beach time and celebrating their 26th anniversary. I will be watching for the application.

I know I have concerns about him going back to GA with the seemingly ‘bounty’ on his head but I will defer to Jackie and Barbara on that.

Thanks so much for the note and possible contact for Teddy.

                          Pat

                          11-11-2020:

                          Thank you,
                          Cindy

                            Hi Jackie,
Just wanted to let you know Teddy will be boarding next week along with my threesome while Bruce and I are at Edisto Island.

Teddy has become such a great dog. He is really sweet , happy boy and so obedient!
He now plays with Grace . She likes a nice polite game of chase or hide-n-seek and he he is very gentlemanly in his play style. Giddy loves him and tries to get him to chase her but he always moves away from her. I suspect that he may not have been permitted to play with the little Yorkies in his previous home .

We had a couple come to the house for a visit this week that have been wanting a Airedale . They have been looking for a puppy but they are hard to come by lately. So they wanted to learn more about Airedale rescue. Teddy was a great ambassador for ARG. He is of course a beautiful dog but he was also very friendly and showed off all his tricks (for treats of course). Teddy was a little hesitant at first with the husband and immediately fond of the wife. Their names are Angie and Carol Grice from
Marion, SC should they decide to go through the application process in the future.

Hope all is well with you and your family,

11-19-2020: Terry posted on FB that they’re still waiting for an Airedale since losing their Roscoe 3 years ago. I called and told her we have them in approved but we haven’t had one that would work with their e-fence with woods all around and grandbabies. Mentioned we have a 9yo male coming in (Chauncey), but they were looking for a female.
