12-05-2020 Wendy sent a PM that their renovation is done and they’re ready for their home visit.
12-07-2020 She has apparently communicated with Virgilynne Prewitt and Virg will do their home visit.December 5, 2020 at 9:04 pm in reply to: Casey & Joe Griswold & Uncle Don, Marietta, GA, ADT exp., 1-2 hr alone adopted BEAU_surrendered Beau 2023 #2625512-05-2020 Asked Kate & Shane Schaab if they would do a HV.

December 5, 2020 at 8:22 pm in reply to: Joshua Toepper, Atlanta, GA, Not ADT exp., 0 pets, 0 kids, 8-9 hr alone #2625212-05-2020 From Julie:
Joshua Toeppor – Pastor in GA.
Grew up with German Shepherds would like a change. Seemed to have done research on the breed, understands mental and physical ability of Airedale and grooming aspects.
Asked him what his plans are when he gets a dog. Said he sees setting up dog with crate, beds etc. Crate training is good with him, He would set up a local vet and he has already started looking and asking friends, and would immediately set up obedience training for him and the dog.
We talked about wet and dirty floors – he’s ok with that.I have to talk to the roommate. I texted him the next day confirming I need to spw the roommate and to provide her number. He said she’s from abroad and he only talks to her on the what’s up app. That was Wednesday. I’m not chasing.
If he calls back with her number I would recommend a house visit.
By JMC: Since he says that the roommate will help care for the dog, we do need her to be present for the HV. I don’t necessarily think we need to speak to interview her, but she must be on board with the adoption.
Good call on Toepper. Am I understanding correctly that the roommate doesn’t speak English? I don’t necessarily think we need to interview the roommate, but he says she will help care for the dog bc she is home all the time so she would need to be present for a home visit. In fact, we all know who that dog would bond with: the one who is home all the time!
I’d say this is a long shot for adoption. He’s gone too long.

December 4, 2020 at 8:19 pm in reply to: Zeus, 2-yo M/N Adopted by Anthony McGhee, Charlottesville, VA (rehomed) #2625012-05-2020: We’re so grateful for the financial help with training! The consultation with Nikki went well. She remembers the Airedale to which you referred. I’ll be sure to let her know (s)he had a happy ending. She believes both Maddie and Zeus lack self-control; that Zeus has confidence issues; and that Zeus’ quivering jaw/biting is indicative of high-arousal tendencies. Because they’re 0-3 on positive encounters, this will be the most difficult reintroduction she’s ever handled. Dogs already lived together in her other experiences, so there was at least something positive to build on.
It’ll be 30-60 days before they are introduced from across the room, and there’s no guarantee all of this will work. In the meantime, Jamie and I are to get the following foundation in place:
1) We’re going to zip tie the crates to prevent either of them from bursting through them again. In addition, there will always be two barriers in between them (i.e. gate + door, crate + door). I’m not so sure that we’ll buy any more baby gates. Zeus ate through my best one within 48 hours, because he could see Maddie being walked to the door. I’d rather they just not see each other at all.
2) Their diet must change dramatically. She said the puppy food has too much protein & carbs, which is adding fuel to the fire. We’re going to do the following:
a. Switch them to Farmina or Open Farm food, though she provided a link to other options. Switch from chicken to turkey for a calming effect. The protein must be one of the first two ingredients on the label and be under 28%. It should be low grain (not high or none).
b. Feed them from separate bowls due to having different needs.
c. Control their caloric intake: 2,180 for Maddie & 1,740 for Zeus.
d. Feed them twice a day (no more free-range).
e. Top their food with 10mg CBD Tincture Full Spectrum oil daily to take the edge off. If this doesn’t work, she’ll recommend medication. She prefers to go natural.
f. Treats should continue to be natural (no food coloring or crunchy grain). I had been giving Zeus a lot of bully sticks, hoping it would let him work the nervousness out of his quivering jaw, but she said it won’t help.
3) She has given us free 31-day access to her online foundation course. She mentioned that we need to pay extra attention to the section on hand feeding. She doesn’t think we should focus on the “leave it” and “watch me” instructions for now, which is what another behaviorist had suggested. In addition, she sent us handouts on conditioning a marker, providing constant opportunities, controlling the environment, nutrition, feeding, following through (sigh…), food and bribery, ignoring versus interrupting, jumping, mouthing/chewing/biting, muzzle acclimation, successful time-outs, and teaching self-control.
4) To help us with any accidental encounters, we are not to provide physical corrections or yell. Instead, we’re supposed to use a Marine air horn. A quick pop should startle them enough to interrupt the chaos long enough to separate them. I really don’t know how this part is going to work. Each time we’ve had an encounter, there’s been no opportunity to grab something.
5) Get them both acclimated to Basket Muzzles from Baskerville. She provided instruction on how to measure them correctly and to acclimate them. These will be used when they are reintroduced to keep things safe.
6) Stop using the shock collars, even the vibration and beep functionalities on them. She said that the primary issue with them is that the dogs are walking around having no clue when they’ll be used, so it puts them in a constant heightened state of awareness. That made me feel terrible, because I can completely see how that would be the case. It stinks when you think you’re doing something responsibly only to find out you’re causing harm. At least now I get it. Luckily, we had only put one on Zeus but hadn’t used it. She said it would be “okay” to use an invisible fence if needed for the new neighbor’s dogs but to condition them with a verbal and physical marker while using it to tell them how good they are being. I don’t think this will be necessary, though. Our neighbor’s have picked up on the snackage appeal of their dogs and have been keeping them out of their front yard.
Have a great weekend!
Julie
Hi, Julie. I looked her up in our records and she worked with a couple in Nashville who adopted from us, but they didn’t keep up the training. They ended up surrendering the dog a year later, not having taken Nikki’s nor our advice. Sigh. That sweet dog was adopted again in May 2019 by a lovely couple in NC and she is thriving after they worked with her with a trainer for several weeks.
Whoa! That was a close call with your rooster. Amazing that Zeus let him go when you told him to! That’s great. I love how you’ve made ‘lemonade’ out of his lemon of a hole and plan to plant a fig tree. That’s perfect! I knew I liked you!
Julie, we will pay up to $500 for his training with Nikki, and if more is required, I think we can come to an agreement to cover at least part of any overage. We want this to work for you and Jamie and for Zeus (and Maddie!). I would like for you to share with me Nikki’s conclusions and recommendations for Zeus.
Thank you for looking for solutions for Zeus behavior rather than just giving up on him!

It’s a small world that you know Nikki, lol. Winnie and I used her for our training classes 2 or 3 years back. She is great. Jamie and I are having a consult with her today via Zoom. It’s only $85. She’s going to ask questions and then give us instructions on preparing them to be reintroduced. They aren’t to meet yet. At first, her assistant said she doesn’t travel this far, but after speaking with her, Nikki is willing to come out here. I’m not sure if the consult is when she’ll know whether they can be acclimated to each other or if she has to come out here for a visit first.
Zeus really is fantastic. He’s obedient and highly loving. He pinned our rooster to the ground about a week ago but released him as soon as I said, “no.” He huffed when he released him, and feathers blew out of his mouth. The rooster was fine, though. He’s also so handsome and funny. He enjoys running on the farm and snuggling on the couch. He nuzzles under my chin a lot, and when he lays on me, it’s like a whole person is laying on me. It cracks me up. He still nips a lot, but it’s because he gets so happy. I’ve been giving him lots of things to chew on, hoping that will get the nervous energy out of him. He’s also dug to China in a few spots of the lawn. We’ve decided one of his masterpieces is a perfect spot for our fig tree that we’ve been waiting to plant. We don’t even need a shovel, no joke!
I’m optimistic that Nikki can help. Winnie was the class clown in training sessions. There were times Nikki would just stop instructing and burst into laughter. All of the dogs would sit attentively, but then she’d catch Winnie out of the corner of her eye and find her wrapped head to toe in her leash, asking for a belly rub. Nikki said, “There’s always one,” and modified instruction for Winnie. I think Zeus and Maddie will be in good hands with her.

I know of Nikki Ivey. We may have even used her for another Airedale adopter in the Nashville area. Please let me know what the plan is and we can discuss our financial help.I’m so sorry that Zeus & Maddie are going at each other. That just won’t do!

Hi Jackie. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but things are rough here between Maddie and Zeus. I’ve forwarded the thread below, which explains the situation to a trainer I’ve used before. I wondered if the offer still stands to help cover the cost of training, because it’s looking like it’s going to be costly? Thanks, Julie

To: < guestservices@thefarmatnatcheztrace.com>Hello.
Would you please have your most experienced trainer call me? We have a dire and dangerous situation that we are incapable of resolving on our own. We need an excellent behaviorist to handle it with us, because it’s gone way past training class or taking instruction over the phone. Our only alternative is to return our newest family member, a 2.5 year old male Airedale rescue. He won our hearts before his paws touched our farm, and we know we’re the right home for him if we can get past this issue. We had a plan in place for reintroducing him to our 8-month old female German Shepherd, because their first encounter was a bust. Sunday was to be their second introduction, but an all out brawl broke out about a half hour ago, with my partner in the middle of it. There was blood involved, and my partner is utterly shaken. I just know this dog will never get a good home if we don’t get him past this, but we have no more time to work on our plan. We need help.
Thank you,
Julie

We’d love to help. This is something Nikki works with frequently. We received your voicemail as well. Is there a good time to call you later this afternoon?
In-home sessions are 1.5 hours and are $175 (there is a travel fee for some addresses based on your zip code and distance from White Bluff). You don’t have to commit to a certain number of sessions, though we typically recommend 3-5 for what you described. Sessions are spaced about 2 weeks apart. Occasionally some dogs just cannot coexist, but this is something Nikki would be able to determine in the first session.
We use only positive methods when training.
Let me know if you have any questions! I’ll be out of the office until around 3, so let me know what time works best to call. Or if you’d like to go ahead and set something up via email, shoot me your address and I’ll send some dates.
Thanks so much,

To: DogSpeak < info@dogspeak101.com>You can call at any time. We’re up at the KY line in Portland, TN (zip 37148). The address is 956 Denning Ford Rd, which sometimes shows up as “Ct” instead of “Rd” when using GPS. It’s 1.5 hours from White Bluff. I’m not so sure about waiting 2 whole weeks in between sessions. I’ve never seen two dogs interact so poorly. They’ve only seen each other 3x but manage to go at each other through doors about 5x a day, despite both being on leashes or crated. Maddie burst out of her crate last night when she saw him. I feel like we’re reinforcing the negative behavior every time they go at it through the doors, even though we’re trying to keep them apart. Having to crate one or the other at all times is also making it worse, because both dogs do so well when they’re free to run and play all day. The plan was to teach them “watch me” and “leave it,” then exercise the heck out of them without having fed them, let them see each other from afar while leashed, work them slowly toward each other with treats and “watch me” to keep them from locking eyes, and once they were about 10′ apart with tails slightly wagging, we were going to let go of the leashes and let them take it from there. But like I mentioned, it’s just getting worse before we have the opportunity to do that. Nikki will have her work cut out for her, for sure.

Casey lives with Husband, son, and Uncle Don (70)- he’s the experienced Airedale owner. She states they will be living with him…until. She seemed to understand Airedale personality, stubbornness and how dirty they are. 2 acres fenced in yard. She will be the primary caretaker for walks and runs. Don will have the companion responsibility..meaning he needs a friend. She’s positive that they are living with Don forever. Son Will is 16 months old. He gets along with Lucy.
Abraham, the bulldog, went after her, Will, and the husband in separate instances. The vet stated he had brain tumor. They had a behaviorist come to evaluate Abraham and she stated putting him down would be the only option due to aggression and medical issues. We all know Bulldogs are crazy!Vet – Retriever is 12yrs old. UTD, no injuries ever reported. UTI’s taking medications.
Walker and Abraham were seen consistently and died of Cancer and Brain tumor
Groomer reference – Lucy the retriever goes there and is UTD no issues. They do groom Airedales.I would recommend a Home visit. The closest big city would be Atlanta.

From Angela Gwaltney agwaltney@live.com
This is Arlo (3 years old) October 24th. His owner passed on October 8th, I was hoping to be able to take him in. However, he is a bit too rambunctious with my miniature schnauzer Willis.
I want Arlo to go to a loving home, where he gets the attention he deserves! He is starving for love and attention.
I contacted a family in Conover, NC that my groomer recommends and am waiting to hear back from them. I want to have a plan in order. Is this something that the Airedale Terrier Rescue Group can help with?
I really hate to give him up ~ but, I feel another family can help him grow! I know that I am not able to fulfill his needs because he is always begging for ALL of the attention. We are placing Arlo (🙏) from Hiddenite, NC with Lauren & Ian Schneider. We had offered Rex, the 11-mo-old but his mom doesn’t want him going to someone with 3 other dogs, a big farm to play on, 3 kids to love on him, because she doesn’t think he’ll get the attention he needs, and she wants him to go into police work, search & rescue, agility, or IDK, accounting. So she’s going to keep Rex.
Angela Gwaltney sent us an email last night about Arlo. She’s had him only since Oct. 16. His owner died and the owner’s niece called her bc she knew Angela had previously had an Airedale. Angela took him to keep him from going to the shelter. (Angela is the Detention Corporal at the local Sheriff’s office, and the niece is a former inmate!) Angela is a hoot, and this boy is so fortunate that she took him in. She doesn’t know enough about him to fill out a Relinquishment form so I just talked to her this morning. She’s off tomorrow and Thursday and I’m waiting to hear back from the Schneiders.

Here’s what she told me about Arlo:
When she went to pick him up, he was wild in a 1-bedroom apt, wearing a prong collar and so excited to see someone.
Her mini-Schnauzer is terrified of him and won’t play with him.
He’s due a shot in Dec. (She has his records.)
He licks his back left paw – keeps it moist – he doesn’t like his feet messed with. (probably a hot spot from boredom)
He’s mouthy when he wants attention.
She bought him a vibration collar and a trainer who works at the Sheriff’s office helped her with some training. (UGH!)
When she goes to work, he’s in one part of the house, and Willis, the mini-Schn is in another. She uses baby gates. He doesn’t tear anything up.
She’s guessing he’s 80 lbs. He’s taller than the Airedale she used to have. (She was at work and didn’t have the records in front of her.)She can bring him to you or meet you tomorrow or Thursday.
Arlo adopted by the Schneiders.
