12-09-2020: Based on his past experience with Delia Hardie with NOLA Airedales and the fact that he has owned 2 Airedales, one a rescue, and based on Delia’s reference and the astounding reference from his dog-sitter, I’m moving him to Approved.
He wants to volunteer with us. I’m happy about that.

I hope also that you and your family and friends are doing well and staying clear of this horrible COVID mess.Brett was an excellent volunteer when he was here with me and accompanied me on numerous shelter pick ups. I was sorry to lose him when his business required him to leave here. I would take him back in a heart beat.
Yes, I definitely would recommend him as a volunteer for you and as an adopter also.
I had lost track of him when he moved to North Carolina (?). Is he still there?Delia Hardie

Hi Jackie!
First, I dog sit for a bunch of people and many have used me as a reference. Unbenounced to them I sometimes give them a thumb’s down. I cannot abide people who are at the very least, not curious about their dog’s needs. For example, someone who never takes off the electric collar. That makes me absolutely crazy. Long toenails and unexpressed anal glands(as needed) make me nuts as well. If the owners don’t have a good dog bed I will buy them one as a “surprise”. As you can see, I am feisty about animal care and a tough nut to please.
That said, you would be absolutely crazy not to entrust Brett with the very first dog that needs somewhere to go. I LOVE Brett. He is compassionate, attentive and SMART (yes, this is a factor). When he’s needs to go out of town he avoids the stressful environs of a kennel and hires me instead and I am there 24 hours per day. He is not hesitant to afford whatever is necessary to ensure all the dog’s needs are met and that would include top notch food and medical care. For example, he was sure to provide Apoquel for his last dog kid to alleviate itching from allergies. He didn’t blink at the cost. As I said, he is VERY compassionate. Basically, he is a big lump of love and consideration. He realizes that dogs need love, attention, routine, reliability, discipline and a bunch of silliness. Let me put it this way, I call myself “the dog bitch” and I would actually trust Brett to care for my own dogs. There are less than three people I would entrust with that. That said, please send a dog his way as soon as possible. It would be tragic not to place an animal with him because they would flourish. I also want to thank you for doing what you do.
Sincerely,
Karen WeaverFrom: Jackie Cash

Subject: RE: Brett GuarinoHi, Karen. Brett Guarino has listed you as a personal reference on his application to foster/adopt or volunteer with Airedale Rescue Group. He said that you have taken care of his Airedale(s) when he was out of town.
Do you believe he would be a good guardian of a rescued Airedale as a foster or an adopter?
Is there anything about him that would make you hesitate to allow him to care for your dog(s)?
Do you have any comments?
Thank you for your attention to this request. Have a healthy, happy holiday.
Jackie

December 9, 2020 at 5:40 pm in reply to: Brett Guarino, Raleigh, NC, ADT exp., Rescue exp., 0 kids, 0 pets, 0 hr alone #2629312-09-2020: ISW Brett and he is a very nice man. He teaches data blah-blah with the cloud blah-blah, but was on a 15-minute break. He moved to Raleigh in 2014 and tried to work with someone named Baker or something with a B. I suggested Debbie Butler. Yes, that was it. I told him she was no longer involved and that we covered all of NC, yada, yada.
I asked why he was without a dale now. He wants to wait until his financial situation is more secure, hopefully by 2nd quarter 2021. His financial obligations due to his divorce ended in September, so things are better, but he wants to make sure he could take care of any need his Airedale would have. He worked with Delia Hardie and Zana Curley, more with Delia, in New Orleans. They didn’t get many dales at all. He did adopt his male, Alfi, through them. He was an older dale, they thought 7-8 years old, 80 lbs and had all kinds of worms including heartworms, and a terrible hotspot and no one wanted him. He had him for 8 years so he maybe was not as old as they thought when he got him. He was a very calm, easy-going Airedale. The female Lire he got as a pup from a couple who had Oorang Airedales as farm dogs and they occasionally had a litter. She was a great dog.
We talked about e-fences and he absolutely understands that a rescue would need extensive training. He trained his 2 to the e-fence. They respected the boundaries and didn’t even have to wear the collars. However, when Alfi got old and had some dementia, he would wander off and go a couple of houses away where they had dogs and lie down in their yard. Brett would have to go get him.
Brett works from home 100% now, rarely travels. He has not traveled at all in 2020. When he did travel, he had a great dog-sitter: Karen Weaver. She’s an absolutely ardent custodian of dog welfare. Found her on Nextdoor. He would trust her with most anything. (She’s listed as his personal reference. I’ll check her out.)
When he decides to adopt he will want an Airedale that gets along with other dogs and is safe around kids. He has no children, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be around people with children.
Brett wants to volunteer with ARG and would be glad to help with applications. I told him that I will be back in touch early next week after I discuss with the core group.

Subject: RE: Maggie SpauldingHello,
I spoke with Dr Layton, who did the surgery on Maggie. The mass was not sent off due to cost, Dr Layton did not think it was suspicious. The sutures were dissolvable, so did/do not need to be taken out.
Please let us know if you have any other questions!
Thank you,

Subject: Re: Maggie SpauldingThank you for forwarding the records on Maggie. Can you tell me what kind of cyst was removed from her eyelid? Was it suspicious? It does not appear it was sent for pathology. It also appears that the sutures were left in place; is that correct?
We are to take Maggie into our rescue this week and want to prepare the foster family for her medical conditions. Our organization will pay for all of her medical treatments. She may stay in the Wilmington area but that is undetermined at this time.
Thank you for any help or insight you can provide.

Subject: Rusty/Odie Transport Sunday, December 13, 2020Hello, friends of Airedale Rescue Group. Thank you all for helping us get this handsome, wild-child Odie (fka Rusty) to his forever home. He is a sweetheart and friendly, but we don’t know how he does in the car. Please use a crate just in case. He’s about 70 lbs and about 23-24 inches at the withers, so an XL crate should be fine. He will be traveling with a collar and leash plus his medical records.

Regular safety – PLEASE USE YOUR CHILD LOCKS so that Odie cannot accidentally open a window or door! (It has happened!)Please be aware of Odie when opening car doors, transferring him from person to person, always making sure a hand is on the leash. Because we don’t know how Odie rides in the car, we recommend that you bring a crate for him. If you are not using a crate, we recommend that you close the door on his leash so that 4-6 inches are outside the door. That keeps him safer inside and it allows you to have your hand on the leash before you even open the door.
Remember that he may be afraid of this new experience and being so long in the car. Unless necessary, remain in the car until the transfer occurs; when opening car doors, ensure that the leash is secured. When allowing potty breaks, ensure that collar/leash(s) are tight for no escape; be aware of surroundings – even a plastic bag in the wind may spook a pup in unfamiliar settings. Do not let him off-leash at any time.
COVID safety – please use COVID-19 precautions. Please wear a mask when meeting the next volunteer and employ social distancing. One example may be for the arriving Driver to get Odie out of their car and the accepting driver unlocks their car to allow Odie into it. After touching the leash from the other driver, please use your hand sanitizer.
Please bring along a bowl and a bottle of water and offer water to Odie at each handoff. We want to be sure that he stays hydrated on the trip, but don’t be overly concerned if he doesn’t drink at each handoff. He might also appreciate a small treat or two.
All times are approximate, allowing time for Odie to sniff around, go potty, and have a drink of water. (Humans, too.) Please call the next driver if you see that you are running behind or run into any problems. And, please text me when you have handed Odie over to the next person.
Please take photos at each hand-off and text them to me at 901-438-5782
