This may include the need to attend pet obedience classes to help build a better bond with the new dog in the home. I understand that proper food and veterinarian care can be costly, and I am able to meet these needs. I agree that Airedale Rescue Group may check my veterinarian, groomer and personal references, as well as, my landlord, if applicable. Home visits will be conducted prior to and following an adoption to ensure the safe-keeping of the Airedale. ARG reserves the right to decline adoptions. 12-22-2020 From Desiree:
Jackie, thank you for getting back to me. Nothing has changed. My mom is still with us. We don’t have any children coming into our home- yet- I wish my daughters would surprise with good news- but nothing 😁.
There aren’t many children on our street. A young family with a toddler moved in closer to the corner.
Our Standard Poodle passed away. He was 13 almost 14 years old. He was an amazing doggie; very loyal, respectful, fun and loving. After that, we adopted Our bulldog Penelope, aka Baby Girl and Baby Cakes from Bullies to the Rescue. She is 5 years old and weighs 56 lbs. we thought she would be a good mate for Petey. She is very patient with him. She ADORES my husband. Her past owner was an older gentleman who passed away. She really like men.
Then, last Christmas we were contacted by Mercy Rescue up in Indiana, where we used to live years back. They had rescued three cocker Spaniels from an Amish Puppy Mill and they felt we would be a good home for one of them. Her name is Josephine, or Josie but we call her Princess Bon Bon. She is truly a sweet as candy. She is 27 lbs and she turned 5 this month.
I’m not working now. I am doing some free lance from home. Covid times. All three get along well, but our Petey, aka Velcro Boy ( he thinks he is a lap dog) aka Teddy Bear is so full of energy, the other two are no match for him. We are in no hurry, we just feel, Petey would be so happy with a friend at his own level of energy.
I’m going to send you some photos of them. They are adorable!
        Thank you Jackie,
        Desiree
PS- of course, they ALL are inside dogs. They are family!

12-26-2020 From Lara Pearson Home Evaluation Form:
          HOME EVALUATION FORM

To the Home Evaluator: This form can be used when doing a home visit to evaluate a potential family for a rescued Airedale. Adoption or foster applicants you are visiting have already met preliminary criteria by having their Adoption Application accepted and have passed the telephone interview.

When doing a home visit, please attempt to get as much information as asked for on this form. Ask questions, where appropriate, and get as many details as you can about the home environment. Some of the questions on this form may not apply to this home so use your own judgment.

If possible, bring a friend or another rescue volunteer with you on the home visit. This helps both for the purpose of having another pair of eyes and ears to assist you in making a complete evaluation and for your own personal safety.

          Property bordering on park/field

Condition of Home [check all that apply]:
          Immaculate
          Well-kept XXX
          Lived in but clean
          Exterior untidy
          Interior untidy
          Exterior unkempt/poorly maintained
          Interior trashed/dirty

          Describe the home interior:
[Include type of furnishings, flooring, and general appearance. For example, “antiques with museum atmosphere,” “shabby furniture,” “brand new furniture and/or carpet,” “badly stained carpet,” “hardwood/ vinyl flooring with some carpet/rugs,” etc.]

Comfortable home, normal furnishings for having a one year old and a dog (neither shabby nor chic – not old). Home is beautiful but comfortable. Hardwoods & carpet throughout.

          Accommodations:
[Describe what accommodations the home has for a dog and where the dog will be left when the owners are not at home. For example, “crate in kitchen/laundry room,” “baby gate across kitchen,” “no crate planned,” “pen in basement,” “pen in garage,” “outdoor run,” etc. Include complete description of any pen or kennel [chain link run, dirt run with chicken wire, etc.]. Will the dog ever be left chained out or left unattended in a fenced-in yard? Describe the fencing, if any, and consider security of fence.]

Family is open to crate if dog is crate trained and will buy one, if needed. Their dog currently roams the home at leisure. The home has a fence around the 0.75 acre property. Fence is <6' high, so dogs are not left outside alone. Dogs will never be chained outside.

          Children:
[Give ages of children, if any, and pay special attention to the behavior of the children, the parents' responses and method of discipline, and the children's interactions with other pets. Note whether parents always supervise young children with other pets and if the parents seem to expect the child/children to be "responsible" for the care of the pets.

Cutie pie of a one year old, just walking. Their dog and son were in my lap at the same time. Both adorable. Parents and Uncle Don are both attentive to child and dog. Whole family has a very gentle feel, very warm and kind, even the little one.

          Family Environment:
[Describe the behavior of the adults among themselves, and to any other pets or children. Are they respectful, hectic, noisy, loud, quiet, commanding, etc.?]

Respectful, gentle, fairly quiet. Baby and dog are very sweet.

          Life-Style Compromises:
[Has the applicant thought through life-style compromises pet ownership will require? Give details.]

          Already long-time pet owners.

          Other Pets:
[Describe number, type, age, and gender of the other pets and give complete description of their apparent health and well-being. Things to note would be skin or flea problems, condition of nails, overweight or underweight, type of collar, id tags other pets have, etc.]

Lacy, 11 y.o., loving dog in very good shape. This dog is a solo dog for the first time in her life.

          Owner Interaction with Other Pets:
o Describe the relationship all family members seem to have to other pets. Dog is definitely a member of the family. Child is very gentle with the dog. No pulling or roughness with dog.
o What role will the dog play in applicant's life? Airedale will be companion and belong to Uncle Don, who is an experienced Airedale owner. I viewed pictures (he is a proud Airedale Papa) of all his prior Airedales, that he's had since the 70's. Dog will be part of the family and Casey & Joey will help with Airedale care.
o Are the other pets treated like family members? Absolutely.
o How do the other animals behave? Dog is very gentle. She got at least 2 belly rubs from me. Very docile, no barking when I came in. Dog did not jump, just sat beside me or a family member while I was there.
o If applicant is looking for an additional dog, or cat why does applicant what another? Dog would be a companion to Uncle Don primarily, but would be another member of the family.
o Does applicant believe that the new dog will "train" old dog or vice versa? Not sure as it will depend on the nature of both dogs. Lacy does not appear to be an Alpha dog. The dog is solo for the first time in it's life. Their prior dog passed away last January.
o Has applicant ever owned more than one dog or cat at the same time? Yes, they are experienced dog owners and have had up to 3.
o Is applicant prepared for the increased work, expense [including vet cost], and commotion? Yes
o How committed is adopter? Very Committed. Uncle Don is an Airedale man. He longs for the love of an Airedale and they are extremely special.
o What are the owner's responses to behaviors good and bad? Family is very gentle and warm.
o Do owners demand perfection or have unreasonable expectation regarding behaviors No
o Do other dogs in the home obey happily? Yes
o Are the other dogs out of control and undisciplined? No
o Do the owners appear to know some basic training techniques? These are advanced dog owners and are experienced rescuers
o How do the animals react to the owner's response? Dog obeys to very calm requests.

          Important Question to Answer:
o Explain that re-homing a dog is stressful for the dog.
o That often the rescued dog they want to adopt or foster may have training accidents, even if they are housebroken, while they are in their new home or foster care, for the first few weeks.
o Ask the applicant what they would do or how they would react to the new dog having an accident. Part of dog ownership. They would clean it up.

          What was their reply?

          Please see above

          Additional Information:
o Please describe any additional information about the home environment that you feel is pertinent. Nice home and yard. House appears baby-proofed, so ready for an Airedale. 😉
o Is there anything in general or specifically that would cause you to feel uncomfortable about placing a dog or cat in this home? No If so, what?
o "Gut feelings" are considered important. Would you feel comfortable leaving your own dog with the applicant? __XX__ Yes ____ No
o Explain. This is an experienced rescue dog family and one family member has had multiple Airedales in his life. They love dogs and want to fulfill their Uncle Don's desire to have his beloved Airedale. Uncle is willing to purchase but Niece is committed to rescue. They (Niece & Nephew) also serve in volunteers for transport in other rescue organizations. They are looking forward to welcoming an Airedale into their home.

          Conclusion:

          Approve Applicant XXX
          Do not approve applicant
Approve after additional counseling of applicants
          and/or
Approve after modifications to the home environment

          Please describe:

Additional Suggestions to The Home Evaluator:
          • If you need to take notes during the visit, please do so discreetly on a small note pad, rather than on this form. It is preferred that the applicants feel at ease with you and to be themselves. Complete this form after the visit is over, when you are not in the presence of the applicants.
          • Qualities to note are sincerity, commitment, tolerance of normal animal behavior, honest representation of the home environment, children's behavior with other pets, and expected role of the children in pet care. Obtain explanations about the absence of any family members during the visit. Feel free to ask leading questions to begin productive conversation. Often good conversation will reveal far more than questions.
          • Do not make any promises to the applicants or indicate whether they will be approved to adopt or foster. Please refrain from discussing any animal presently in rescue that may become available for adoption.

Togo loves Rob and loves Georgia, their female Airedale. He wants to be with one or the other, preferably both. Will need a strong male to bond to and another Airedale or big dog to bond with.

12-26-2020: Treacy can’t keep Bonnie. She is very anxious, afraid, timid. He’s been trying to teach her to use the dog door but she is afraid of it. Hank was originally playing with her, now he has become aggressive toward her when she gets close to Treacy.

              Need to place her.

Hardwood flooring with some carpet/rugs. Open concept home with stairs going to second level. Furniture is well kept/new looking with open spacing in between.

Mark shared that he would utilize crating when not at home with the dog. The yard is currently not fenced in, but we discussed how important it would be as to allow the Airedale the ability to run/play without a leash while at home. He said before getting an Airedale, he would have the yard fenced in at a maximum height allowed to prevent the dog from jumping over.

                    Children: NA
[Give ages of children, if any, and pay special attention to the behavior of the children, the parents’ responses and method of discipline, and the children’s interactions with other pets. Note whether parents always supervise young children with other pets and if the parents seem to expect the child/children to be “responsible” for the care of the pets.]

                    Family Environment: NA
[Describe the behavior of the adults among themselves, and to any other pets or children. Are they respectful, hectic, noisy, loud, quiet, commanding, etc.?]

                    Life-Style Compromises:
[Has the applicant thought through life-style compromises pet ownership will require? Give details.]

Before the pandemic, Mark did travel some during the day for work. He said should his travel resume, he would utilize doggy daycare or close friends/neighbors to help keep the dog while away for the day. He definitely has thought about the lifestyle change required for smart dogs such as Airedales, and is willing to make any required compromises/provisions for his dog.

                    Other Pets: NA
[Describe number, type, age, and gender of the other pets and give complete description of their apparent health and well-being. Things to note would be skin or flea problems, condition of nails, overweight or underweight, type of collar, id tags other pets have, etc.]

                    Owner Interaction with Other Pets:
o Describe the relationship all family members seem to have to other pets. NA
o What role will the dog play in applicant’s life? Companion and walking buddy
o Are the other pets treated like family members? NA
o How do the other animals behave? NA
o If applicant is looking for an additional dog, or cat why does applicant what another? NA
o Does applicant believe that the new dog will “train” old dog or vice versa? NA
o Has applicant ever owned more than one dog or cat at the same time? No. Mark also would prefer only to have one Airedale as a pet, with no other pets living in the home.
o Is applicant prepared for the increased work, expense [including vet cost], and commotion? Most definitely. Mark proactively asked for suggestions for good vets and daycare/boarding places in our area.
o How committed is adopter? Very committed. Mark is looking forward to adopting, however, he is willing to wait for the right match.
o What are the owner’s responses to behaviors good and bad? NA
o Do owners demand perfection or have unreasonable expectation regarding behaviors? Mark expressed that he understands and anticipates the transition that adopted Airedales go through as well as their long term needs for engagement/mental stimulation. He has no unrealistic expectations other than for the dog to be a loving companion.
o Do other dogs in the home obey happily? NA
o Are the other dogs out of control and undisciplined? NA
o Do the owners appear to know some basic training techniques? Yes, and is willing to continue any training the potential adopted dog is going through. He also would utilize training to help with any needs the dog has.
o How do the animals react to the owner’s response? NA

                    What was their reply?

Mark understood the transition the Airedale goes through, and said he would be patient and consistent with the dog. He said he believes consistency would also help – regular feeding and walking times, for example, to help the dog anticipate routine and feel secure in the new home.

                    Additional Information:
o Please describe any additional information about the home environment that you feel is pertinent. None
o Is there anything in general or specifically that would cause you to feel uncomfortable about placing a dog or cat in this home? None
                    o If so, what?
o “Gut feelings” are considered important. Would you feel comfortable leaving your own dog with the applicant? __X__ Yes ____ No
                    o Explain.
Mark has a great disposition and a calm, secure energy that I think a rescue Airedale will definitely benefit from. He understands the regular care, maintenance and attention that a smart Airedale will need, and will provide a loving home to one lucky poochie!
                    Conclusion:

                    X. Approve Applicant
                    Do not approve applicant
Approve after additional counseling of applicants
                    and/or
Approve after modifications to the home environment

Additional Suggestions to The Home Evaluator:
                    • If you need to take notes during the visit, please do so discreetly on a small note pad, rather than on this form. It is preferred that the applicants feel at ease with you and to be themselves. Complete this form after the visit is over, when you are not in the presence of the applicants.
                    • Qualities to note are sincerity, commitment, tolerance of normal animal behavior, honest representation of the home environment, children’s behavior with other pets, and expected role of the children in pet care.

12-21-2020 Amber Jenkins adopted Togo – will foster for a week or more. She says he’s a great dog and he and her Welshie Winston got along on first meeting. Fingers crossed for adoption.

12-21-2020 Amber & Kevin Jenkins have picked up Togo from Amber Winslett in Cedartown and are going to foster/adopt him. When they met and introduced their Welshie to Togo, they got along fine and played. I advised Amber J to be careful and to keep Togo on leash in the house for a while to make sure he wasn’t going to mark and to make certain he and Winston didn’t get into a dustup.

Hold off on contract for a week at least.

Good morning, Desiree. Yes, Sue told me to expect to hear from you. After reading your message, my first thought was ‘They’ve got 3 dogs and they want ANOTHER! They must be crazy!’ 😊 Then, it was ‘Of course, they want another Airedale.’

Are you still living in the same home as when you got Petey? Does your mother still live with you? Are you still working part-time, Desiree? You had only the senior Poodle when you got Petey, but have since added Penelope and Josie. How did you come to get them? Are they both inside dogs like Petey? How big are they? I guess they all get along well? We would, of course, want to place an Airedale with you that was good around all dogs and one who could easily acclimate to an established pack.

Previously there were no children that routinely visited your home. Has that changed? Are there a lot of children in your neighborhood?

Let me know about all of the above and we’ll keep you on our “approved/waiting for an Airedale” list. As a former adopter, you are considered “golden.”

We don’t have any Airedales currently, but we never know when that will change. We just got a male and a female on Friday and they both are placed.

I look forward to helping you find the next Airedale!

Have a healthy and happy Christmas and New Year!

We adopted Petey almost two years ago from your organization.  He is a WONDERFUL boy!  He is on the smaller size, about 55 lbs. Our life is so much more fun because of him!
We have an English bulldog, Penelope and a Cocker Spaniel, Josie.  They all get along very well.  All three are 5 years old.  However, neither of the other two breeds  has the size, energy and stamina like Petey does.  We wonder if we could find another sweet Airdale like Petey, they could have a great time.
I reached out to Sue to ask her opinion.  She told me to contact you.  We are in no rush. We would like to find a good friend for Petey and a good addition to our canine family.
Let me know what you think.
