May 10, 2014 at 6:36 pm in reply to: Private: Ann & Jim Calhoun, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464 Abby pts 5 19 #14463
I spoke to Ann either 05-07 or 05-08-14 and talked a little about their Airedale Zoe who died last November and about their Welsh. Since they had been previously approved and are friends to ARG, I told them they are approved. Ann had already contacted Christina about Lucy in GA and Jim had emailed Christina asking specific questions about Lucy. They are slated to adopt Lucy if all goes well when they meet in a week or so.
05-05-14:
Offered Clyde to Marlene Jolin, who is going to call Barb Saylor about Clyde.
From Barb Saylor 05-05-14:
Wow – this is wonderful news.
The positive spin on Clyde’s unfortunate circumstances is that there’s a good chance he may be housebroken by the time he moves on to his forever home. He is continuing to rest and recover in the comfort and peace/quite of the kitchen and foyer while Truman, Tilly, and Ziggy stay out doors except when they come in to the bedroom at night through another door at the other end of the house. He’s eating, drinking, and the wounds are slowly showing improvement. I slept in the living room where I could keep an eye on him during the night, and this morning when I got up, he was standing at the living room door just wagging that little stub of his. I still don’t think he’s quite ready for a long ride, but I will continue to give you progress reports.
We tried fixing him some nice fresh beef liver for dinner last night. Not interested — but he’s eating other good stuff including dog food, chicken, and eggs.

Called and offered Clyde 5-5-14
From Barb Saylor 05-02-14:
I have some unpleasant news that bothers me to have to send you on a Friday, but know is best to keep everyone informed. Yesterday afternoon when Terry got home from work Clyde was hiding under the deck and it was evident that he and Ziggy had gotten into an altercation. Although Clyde did not have any abrasions, he was clearly in pain. Terry carried him to the pen, gave him an aspirin, but he would not eat his supper nor was he interested in breakfast this morning – which included a fresh grilled hamburger patty. He was walking, and was able to walk to the pickup to get in, and we took him to the Vet early today. We have a second Vet in Orangeburg that we like and use for more serious issues that would involve x-rays, various lab tests, IVs, close monitoring, etc.. Terry spoke to them earlier and they are giving him IV pain medication, but I don’t believe they’ve made any determination as to the injuries/source of discomfort. They are going to keep him overnight.
This saddens me for a number of reasons and was also quite a shock because after the initial day or so – they have all gotten along so well together. Terry is much more discerning and observant of behavior/personalities (human and animal) than I am, but we both feel that this probably was not Clyde’s fault. There also is no physical indication that Truman and Tilly were involved. Ziggy has some facial abrasions, and we think that Ziggy was perhaps a bit jealous or uncertain of Clyde. There is a very entertaining dynamic between Ziggy and Truman – where Truman just picks and picks at Ziggy until Ziggy makes his “Vampire” look and a big sound. But they never bite or hurt each other and it is just a big daily game with them. I think it’s possible that somehow Clyde may have tried to join in on that or been too close and it may have seemed hostile to Ziggy. But who knows, and I’m just speculating. Clyde does not seem aggressive at all, but with 4 of them – anything could have been the trigger.
We are supposed to pick Clyde up from the Vet in the morning, so I will write you tomorrow with an update. We will keep Clyde in the pen when the others are in the yard and only let him out in the yard when the others are inside. I really hate this has happened!
So sorry for the upsetting news.

We picked up Clyde from the vet’s a little while ago. He was beaten up pretty badly and the vet said he worried that he might not make it through the night. He has a lot of deep puncture wounds that were not visible through all that fur–thighs, groin, and one up under his eye lid- but his eye appears to be ok. We have pain meds and antibiotics for him. He will need to be kept inside until healed so the flys don’t bother him. And as bad as he feels he’s still wagging that little stump of a tail. He owns the whole kitchen and foyer now and is listening to soft music.
I just really feel so awful that this has happened. I feel that I misjudged the safety for him – but they were all getting along so well. But I should have remembered that at the end of the day they are still animals.
If there’s any way that we can make a smooth transition to another temp or perm home in the near future we think that would be best for all. However until that happens, be assured that we will take very good care of him and not have him anywhere around the others.
May 3, 2014 at 5:18 pm in reply to: Private: Peggy Broadway, New Bern, NC email ID invalid 2022 #14444HV Report by Susanne Dickerson: She has no reservations about Peggy. She said that Peggy is very nice and friendly and is already prepared both in equipment and emotionally for this dog; her son on board with her. Peggy’s only concern is her chihuahua getting along with the Airedale, but the chihuahua wanted to play with Susanne’s Junebug. But June is too rough. Peggy has a nice yard and a nearby park where she took her dog Paddington, In fact, Susanne remembers seeing them there before. Peggy at 78 years old is not frail or fragile; does her own extensive gardening and is very active physically and mentally. Should something happen to Peggy, her son will take both the Chihuahua and the Airedale. Peggy will acclimate her Airedale to both her and her son’s homes.
She’s good.
Compilation of comments about Clyde from Barb Saylor:
Well Clyde is indeed a sweetie. Still not able to get what I would consider a good photo because Clyde wants to be right up in your face being petted or delivering kisses. This is his “why did you stop rubbing me?” look. He’s very friendly toward his furry family here, and our group has calmed down quite a bit.
He really is so sweet and the only difficulty is that he is not at all housebroken so he can’t sleep inside at night. However, the other guys are so glad to see him when they go out during the night that they’re not wild about coming back in.
Clyde is a perfect gentleman—by observing him strolling the perimeter of “his estate” one would think all that’s missing is a comfy smoking jacket and favorite Cuban cigar.
Clyde is that he walks very nicely on his leash
He’s a tad bit on the thin side – although you could never tell looking at all that rich fur, and his teeth look pretty good.
Clyde will be quite a delightful dog for his new forever family. He gets along great w other dogs-male and female. He’s affectionate but not obnoxious–ie not a roundly jumper, etc. He likes his ‘major hug outs’ like his Uncle Z, but does not appear to be overly needy. Fully vaccinated now, all checked out by vet with no noticeable problems, and vet says he appears to be between 2 and 4. And when he wags that little tale you just want to take him into your arms! Impossible to tell how he’d do around children as none have been with us since his arrival. We have no indication that he possesses talents for vacuuming, dusting, or cleaning bathrooms. I’m tempted to put the boy to the test though. I would venture to guess he would work nicely as an only dog or w kids because he is calm and independent.
He really is a sweetie, gets along quite well with the other crowd, and will make a great pet for a lucky family

April 24, 2014 at 2:38 pm in reply to: Private: Peggy Broadway, New Bern, NC email ID invalid 2022 #1444004/24/14 I had a delightful conversation with Peggy Broadway, who is an active, involved, smart 78-y-o woman. She asked right away if her age would put her at the end of the line for adoption and I assured her it would not. The major considerations for her to adopt will be finding an Airedale who can get along with a 9-y-o Chihuahua and one that is not too boisterous/too young for her. I’d say a middle-aged Airedale would be great. Peggy walks daily, goes to the ocean as often as possible, walks to the river, etc.
Her yard is not completely fenced; it is fenced from the street and on the sides, but not the back and a neighbor shares her drive to get to his home behind hers, so fencing is not practical there. She is committed to always being outside with her Airedale and leash walking even in her own yard.
She mentioned that she had visited an Airedale breeder nearby – obviously Linda Bakke Jarvis – and Linda had a 5-y-o female who she wants to breed one more time. Peggy was concerned that Linda referred to that female as a “kennel” dog and peggy was horrified to think that the dale never left the kennel. I don’t know if that is true, but I suspect not and told Peggy as much and that Linda has always been a friend of rescue.
Need a vet check and a home visit.

April 13, 2014 at 6:43 pm in reply to: Private: John & Caroline Bushwack SEE AUGUST 2015 APPLICATION #1436604-13-14 I spoke to John Bushwack yesterday. He actually applied first on March 25 and I saw his app, then lost it in my email. When I saw the app come in again day before yesterday, I recognized the name, of course. My biggest concern was the fact that they gave up two Airedales, rather sold them, when they had to move from a rural area to an urban area. He was transferred with Union Carbide and was going to an apartment and could not take the dogs. They were 3 years old, brother and sister, and they sold them to a very good family. That was many, many years ago. They have not had dogs since as he has moved around a lot with Union Carbide before retiring. Another concern was the buried wire fence. We talked a lot about Airedales chasing after vermin and breaching e-fences. I suggested that if they do that, they use their professional trainer to help them train the Airedale to the e-fence and that they work with the dog for a long time before trusting it and then never leave it outside if they are not also outside. Both his daughter and his son-in-law are vets, the daughter for large animals, the s-i-l for small animals, so their grandchildren are accustomed to being around all kinds of animals but will be supervised with any new animal until they are confident it is safe. John was very nice and I think will be a good dale-father. Just need a home visit.
04-09-14 Emailed Kathryn asking if she still wanted to proceed. BTW; she had another post from November 2013 that I have deleted. It was the same app basically but she had not responded to my attempts to contact her. She apparently applied anew 3 weeks ago and now is laying low again. Hmmmm.
Also, Christina suggested Alyssa Austin, who returns to Greensboro often, might be able to do home visit.
