January 11, 2021 at 9:10 pm in reply to: Bonnie now BEBE, 10-mo-old Female Intact (NOW 1 YR OLD as of 1/17/2021) Adopted Sydney Atkinson #2653401-11-21: Treacy called me today. Hank has attacked Bonnie twice and growls at her if she gets close to Treacy. Once, they both were in the yard, as was Treacy, and Bonnie had a bone. (Hank had one too.) But Hank ran over and attacked Bonnie. Treacy was able to break it up and no injuries. The second time, again in the yard, and Bonnie was just walking around the yard and Hank went after her. Treacy has no idea why this is happening. He talked to his trainer and she is dumbfounded because she knows Hank and can’t understand this. I think Treacy is going to surrender Bonnie. We were interrupted and he is going to call me back.
He’s trying to keep them separated. She in her crate when Treacy is gone. When he is there, they are in opposite rooms. One is near and the other is not.
If he is on the couch, she’s lying by him, and Hank is at te other end. Friend brought corgi/sharpei mix over, he’s about the length of sharpei. Probably about the same size as Bonnie; she’s taller. They play great. She is very sweet meeting people and other dogs. A little skittish and timid, but she calms down and is good with them.

How wonderful that you still have Birch that you adopted from us.We are happy to consider you for another Airedale. We have already found a new home for Bonnie with another previous adopter, but we will keep you in the “Approved/Waiting for Airedale” file and consider you as we get other Airedales into rescue.
We hope you have a happy, healthy 2021!

Jennifer Jarman sent me a message that she has bought a puppy.January 9, 2021 at 6:56 pm in reply to: Teddy, 3 yo M/N, Foster w Cindy Green, 2 bite incidents #26519Teddy Transport
Hello, – updated for Bruce/Lenore (Location) and Gary/Donna (location) -no changes to timesThank you ARG volunteers for helping to transport Teddy tomorrow from Florence SC to his new home in Mississippi! We appreciate your time and this adoption would not be possible without you.
Background on Teddy: Teddy, has been in witness-protection with our foster mom/trainer because he bit a couple of children in GA. The bites didn’t require anything but a bandaid but the parents of the children have sued the previous owner of this Airedale. The owner surrendered him to ARG before the lawsuit was filed, and for months we didn’t know whether we could legally have him adopted.
From the time our trainer took him, she said that he was NOT an aggressive dog. He simply grew up without boundaries, in a very small world without a lot of socialization or opportunities to learn to be around children or anyone other than mom and dad. He has lived happily with Cindy, the trainer, and her husband, their 2 Airedales, and a long-haired dachshund for months now and is a great dog. He is a bit aloof and unsure of himself in new situations, but he is a good boy. He’s got a long life ahead of him and our adopter can provide him a happy, stimulating, secure life. For these reasons, we will re-name Teddy for this transport if anything is said publicly (social media) about him. Let’s call him Rex! We love for you to share your transport experience on social media , , however if you do – just call him Rex a nd don’t mentio n his bite history.” THANK YOU !
Safety:
Regular safety – please ensure that you are aware of Teddy when opening car doors, transferring him from person to person, always making sure a hand is on the leash. Unless necessary, remain in car until transport transfer occurs; when opening car doors, ensure that the leash is secured by hand on the leash; when allowing potty breaks – ensure that collar/leash(s) are tight for no escape; be aware of surroundings – even a plastic bag in the wind may spook a dog in unfamiliar settings. Do not let him off leash at any time 😊
COVID safety – please apply COVID to your safety. We ask that you wear a mask when meeting your transport volunteer. One example may be for Transport Driver to get the dog out of their car and the other transport driver unlock the car/access for the dog to their car. One driver will put Teddy in the next car and that limits hand off/touching.PLEASE USE YOUR CHILD LOCKS so that Teddy cannot accidentally open a window or door! (It has happened!)
Always ensure paperwork/etc is transferred.

I’ll get in touch with Phillip to arrange a good time for a home visit, but it may be a while. I’ve been sick and our Covid numbers are really high so I can’t take a chance right now.Thank you for your help, again, Mary.

wrote: Jackie and Pat,
I had a good call with Phillip Barrows Thursday evening. (NOTE: correct phone is 901.517.2080)
They were in Augusta, GA and met a 4 YO female ADTat a restaurant (the owner’s dog) and really liked her personality. They have always been dog owners; their last two dogs were Rudy, the Shar-pei mix, and a rescued senior Beagle. It’s been about two years since they lost their last dog and they are ready for another. They have always had males but are open to a female; all of their dogs have been rescues. The age of the dog doesn’t matter, with the exception that they are not wanting a puppy under about 1 YO.
At Grace Animal hospital, the dogs were well known to them, with both being up to date not only on regular vaccines, flea/tick (Bravecto), etc. but also with any necessary Rx. The beagle was diabetic. Grace Animal Hospital also said they kept up with the grooming.
The family home is a townhome/condo. There is a courtyard between the home and the garage area that is cement and foliage, the perimeter being ivy. There is also a grass run outside the garage, and a dog park (Central Bark) on the corner of the block. The couple walk 2-3 miles every day, sometimes during the longer days 2x a day. Because of their home being a townhome with not a large yard, I decided to check Phillip’s Facebook page and they do look like they are active based on the scenery and their clothing (not being FB friends, I couldn’t see anything but his profile photos). I initially wondered if the townhome’s ‘yard’ would work but with the dog park on the corner, the grassy run Phillip mentioned out back by the garage, and their daily walks, the dog would get the exercise needed., especially if they get a more senior dog, which they would be fine with.
Their 7 YO granddaughter is used to dogs. She has grown up with 2 dogs, a boxer and a lab mix, and they have recently adopted a boxer puppy. She is good with dogs and understands appropriate behavior with and around dogs.
We talked about Airedales being messy. They’re used to muddy paw prints, although I did mention wet beards. Phillip said their Shar-Pei was a messy drinker so they’re used to that. They keep an organized house but dog hair and muddy paws don’t bother them. Their floors downstairs are tile and upstairs hardwood.
Right now, both work from home and will continue to be for the next year. We also talked about the ‘dale personality. They picked on the goofiness/silliness from the ‘dale in Augusta they met and they liked that.
There will be some weekday travel for each but they will trade off so there will generally be one traveling and one at home. They plan to travel to Naples, FL at some point but the dog will come with them.
I talked about the need for both physical and mental stimulation with an Airedale and he seemed to get it. I talked about obedience training, as well as other things like agility as being good for not only the physical and mental stimulation but bonding. He said they are definitely open to obedience training.
Crating: They crated recent dogs. Generally the dog will be crated overnight and if they need to both leave the house so long as the dog isn’t ready to be left on its own. Once the dog can be trusted to not chew furniture, etc., they don’t plan to crate if they leave the house. They have a split level and may have a crate both in the bedroom and downstairs in the kitchen or main room. The dog will sleep in its crate in their bedroom.
We talked about dog food. They purchased their previous dogs’ food at Hollywood Feed. Initially they’d gone with basic kibble but when they started shopping at Hollywood Feed, they upgraded to a higher quality food. I suggested they also look at DogFoodAdvisor when deciding what to feed their next dog.
The only time they ever gave up a dog is when they took in another person’s German Shepherd. The dog, it turned out, was territorial and attacked a neighbor, and the dog didn’t like other family members near Phillip. It seemed to work for about a month but then the dog attacked Phillip so it had to be euthanized. They actually had another rescue who was territorial and attempted to bite Phillip’s wife but they got some good advice from their vet, worked with the dog, and they never had another problem with the dog: “it was great.” Otherwise, he can’t imagine any other reason to give up a dog.
I asked what they would do if the dog got lost. Phillip mentioned getting on social media to alert the neighbors, and reaching out to their contacts and the vet. I recommended chipping the dog and the inexpensive cost of maintaining registration (I pay $19 per year, per dog, well worth the price).
They are okay with the $400 adoption fee.
I looked at what I could see of his Facebook page and they do look like they are active based on the scenery and their clothing (not being FB friends, I couldn’t see anything but his profile photos). I initially wondered if the townhome’s ‘yard’ would work but with the dog park on the corner, the grassy run Phillip mentioned out back by the garage, and their daily walks, I am confident the dog would get the exercise needed, especially if the dog is 6-7, or a senior dog, which they would be fine with.
I’ve not heard back from their reference, Dale Johnson. I’ll call his daughter, Kyle, tomorrow and will also try Dale again if I don’t hear from him sometime in the morning. My key question for the daughter is to get her thoughts as to the best temperament for the dog and also confirm the dog will get enough exercise. I’ll shoot you an email as soon as I have those conversations.
They are aware of the need for a home visit.

____________
Phillip Barrows’ reference, Dale Johnson, returned my call early this AM and confirmed how well cared for Rudy was and how much Phillip and his wife walked on a daily basis. The pedestrian bridge across the Mississippi is a few blocks away and most days they walk over it to the trails there in Arkansas.
He also confirmed how well taken care of Rudy was and while they generally kept a clean house, were not disturbed by muddy paw prints, etc.
Dale has confirmed the same answers to questions that I was going to ask their daughter, Kyle, so I don’t think there’s a need to call her, although I will if you would like additional confirmation. Just let me know.

Regular safety – PLEASE USE YOUR CHILD LOCKS so that Mae cannot accidentally open a window or door! Mae will be in a crate with Lenore & Carol, and then with Chris. I don’t think Stew & Joan have one, but one of them will get to snuggle with this sweet Aire-pup.Please be aware of Mae when opening car doors, transferring her from person to person, always making sure a hand is on the leash. Remember that she may be afraid of this new experience, being so long in the car. Unless necessary, remain in the car until the transfer occurs; when opening car doors, ensure that the leash is secured. When allowing potty breaks, ensure that collar/leash(s) are tight for no escape; be aware of surroundings – even a plastic bag in the wind may spook a pup in unfamiliar settings. Do not let her off-leash at any time.
COVID safety – please use COVID-19 precautions. Please wear a mask when meeting the next volunteer and employ social distancing. One example may be for the arriving Driver to get Mae out of their car and the accepting driver unlocks their car to allow Mae into it. After touching the leash from the other driver, use your hand sanitizer.
Please bring along a bowl and a bottle of water and offer water to Mae at each handoff. We want to be sure that she stays hydrated on the trip, but don’t be overly concerned if she doesn’t drink at each handoff. She might also appreciate a small treat or two.
All times are approximate, allowing time for Mae to sniff around, go potty, and have a drink of water. (Humans, too.) Please call the next driver if you see that you are running behind or run into any problems. And, please let me know when you have handed Mae over to the next person.
