Jackie, we are in the final stretch (I hope), as this finishes seven weeks post surgery. Next week Carley will get X-rays at Shallowford animal hospital, and hopefully a clean bill of health to let her start running and just being a regular dog again. She has done well with rehab ( a bit scared of the water treadmill), but learned to climb stairs and stand on the weak leg, as well as balance improvement. We have one more session at rehab and therapist is satisfied with Carley’s progress.
Carley’s temperament and confidence has changed also over the past couple of months, she is a stronger girl now and her behavior reflects same. She has become a more normal Airedale, no longer timid or shy, barks and regained that stubborn streak that is part of the breed.
      Fyi,
      Chuck

Great report, Chuck. I’m sorry she is scared of the treadmill. Does the therapist stand inside the tank with her or outside? You said the therapist is happy with her progress; are you happy with her progress? It’s wonderful that she’s showing that Airedale spirit now. How is she on her walks? Is she able to keep up with Coltrane and Lady Bug on walks? Do they all play together now that she’s better?

Is your appointment at Shallowford the 21st? Just call me when you’re ready to check out. I’m keeping my fingers and paws crossed for perfect x-rays!

Thank you, Chuck. I’d love to see a photo of her on her last checkup so we can post it on FB to all her donors!

02/11/18: Jmc messaged Pat Lanese re Hattie formerly Tallulah. She gave up Tallulah because she kept escaping.

I finally put her up when she ran in front of a bus.
        I had double gates.
One on my front door and one on the porch.
And she would find the time something was not hooked and off she would go.
        Running like the wind.
Not a chase me and see if you can catch me, but screw your I’m off to party.
I never had a runner like her.

        Pat:
Sorry I’m in between homes right now.
Was in Florida for the past 2 years, but back in Savannah staying with a friend for awhile.
Other wise I would foster her.
Hope I can be of help again by summer.
        Good luck

02/11/18: I’ve offered Hattie to Karen Wiebe. Spoke to her and she is concerned about the urinary incontinence and whether Proin would be fool-proof. She does not want to use a crate – never has and doesn’t want one in her home. Also concerned about Hattie’s separation anxiety and whether she would do okay in a run outside if they’re gone for an hour or two.

(I messaged Pat Lanese who is the one who gave up Tallulah (Hattie) and it was because she was a runner. She would get out if someone didn’t secure the gate and just run and keep running.

Find out about the outside run. How tall?

          02/11/18: JMC to Elaine Damon:
Hi, Lanie. I’ve been talking to a former adopter about Hattie. She is concerned about the urinary incontinence. Can you tell me when she began having the incontinence? You mentioned she has a weak sphincter muscle. Has she experienced urinary tract infections or skin “scalding” because of the incontinence? Does the Proin work effectively enough that you don’t worry about her having accidents in the house? The day she urinated on your bed, do you think it was because she just could not hold it anymore?

The potential adopter doesn’t have a crate and doesn’t want to use one, but she and her husband are retired and Hattie wouldn’t be home alone very much. They have an outside run that they could use if they were going to be gone an hour or two. I wonder how she would react to that. Since you don’t have a backyard for her to go in, you may not be able to answer that.

Thank you for answering these questions if you can. If this home is not the one, we will keep trying.

We fostered Mike and adopted and tried to keep Bucky, but he proved to feisty for us. Were I to choose, I’d choose a smaller dog because I cannot lift a 73-pound ‘dale into the wagon for vet visits. Others have suggested smaller breeds but only Airdales have that je ne sais quoi!

Hi, Karen. I do remember your name and looked back in our database and see that you lost your ‘dale a couple of years ago. I’m sorry you no longer have him. I’m sorry your husband has been ill but it’s great that he’s better.

We often have need of foster homes to help us learn about the Airedales who come to us with unknown backgrounds. We wish they could talk!

We’ll move your information to our “Willing to Foster” section and we appreciate your offer very much! Do you think that you might foster and decide to keep the ‘dale? Foster parents always have first choice.

Thank you, Karen. I hope Walter continues to improve.

02/10/18 jmc: Email from Cindy Green to jmc:
Maggie has made some slow progress. She is very good on leash with no reactivity to my dogs. She will sit for me to put on her leash and then wait to go out the door. She waits nicely for her food as well. She sleeps the night in her crate and does well in an outdoor run during the day without nuisance barking. She will whine but hushes with a verbal correction.
Finally in the last few days she is relaxing in the house without obsessing on lights and shadows but still avoids the refrigerator and that whole side of the room. We just started working on “Place “ command to get her to relax and stay on a dog bed in an open room . Previously she would just run to the back door if she was off leash in the house.

                    Issues
She is a nervous wreck about riding in the car .
I took her to a ball park to walk yesterday and she really had trouble relaxing and walking in a new place even though it was quiet at that time of day. She again fixates visually on every little thing. But we managed and with regular practice in a car and in new places I am sure she will improve.
My guess is her world was very small thus she is very insecure. Seeing her relax in her new routine and environment indicates she just needs structure to build confidence . Then exposure to a bigger world in a calmer state of mind.

                    Some bad stuff-
She will growl at any handling of her paws, underside or hind quarters. I took her to Woofers today for a bath as she was really smelly. The ride there along with the new environment had her so worked up that we gave her some sedative. Even with the sedative she growled the entire bath and I asked them not to progress with trying to groom her. However she never showed teeth or advanced to more aggressive behavior.
I tested her with a ball . She gets over excited and growly over a ball when you approach.
This will take some serious work to correct this behavior . Suspect this is again insecurity along with some entitlement.
The Mighty Maggie needs a good bit of work but I have seen a few glimpses of a big goofy girl hiding out behind some bad stuff.
She is going to need a very committed owner that understands the follow through that will be needed for her to be a safe dog.

02/10/18 jmc: I spoke to Lanie about Hattie; my notes:
The separation anxiety has been going on a while, she had it 2 years ago when boarded. She had been boarded before. She may now be connected to dog walker more than Lanie. She had been working only part time and then transition back to working. Hattie acted out that first week. She works at GA tech with snow days, the MLK holiday, it was really the 3rd-4th week of Jan gone for whole week. She really acted out when she was late. Walker spends ½ hr walking and staying sometimes and just watch tv.
Urinary issue is a transient thing and she’s doing fine. A couple of weeks ago, she dripped. Proin works for her. It’s for the weak urinary sphincter. Health is fine. She had another Airedale who lived to almost 13 and Hattie is sturdier. She could live another 5 years. Forgot to put on the form, she has a fatty tumor, aspirated and it’s fine.

Age of children – 3 dog walkers since she had her. The first was a pre-school teacher with 2 children 6 and 8 and kids would come with her and sometimes they went to pre-school and wait on playground for children to come out and Hattie loved them.

A lot of dogs in condo complex; there are 3 dogs that she just will have a fit if she sees them – one a rat terrier and he is afraid of big dogs. The other is about her size and tried to introduce them and they were ok. Then owner got scared of Hattie and ended. Both escaped their collars and started going at it. Owner kicked Hattie. The other dog is min schnauzer they’re both high energy and the woman who walks it turns around and goes the other direction. The guy is oblivious. She has a hard time controlling her. Leash aggression. The dog walker has no problem with her at all even when she sees those same dogs. (I think she is being protective of Lanie.) She used to board and go to day care and another place. The boarding place that refused to let her come back was an older couple Boarding in their home and lots of crates and dogs went into back yard in play groups. It was maybe a time when they were busy and Hattie wasn’t getting enough attention. She chewed a gate to get into the yard. Recent boarding was fine. now stayed over 1 and got an A+. They love her and fawn over her and they love her and she does fine.

Re the vapor trails: She’s ready to come in as soon as she sees one. 2nd dog walker is the one who identified the vapor trails. Open space and she sees it, she comes in. If they’re in the woods with lots of trees and she can’t see them, she’s ok.

Basic obedience initially, walking on leash, sitting, shaking hands, mind tricks, teaching them to creep after things. Walk around the manhole covers and did some agility work which she loved.

Ideal home: She has a dog door but wouldn’t use it to go on the deck. Somewhere that she can be outside but inside with her people. Activity going on and she needs the activity. Walks every morning 30-45 in before work. Perfectly good. And go to the dog park – she was fine there. Chases squirrels. Some dogs she didn’t like there. She digs. They will pay a lot of attention to her. She’s very smart. Peanut butter in kong and frozen. She waits till it melts. She has antlers and bones and loves the Himalayan chews. Has a box of the chews that can go with her.

Lanie thinks Hattie ws with Pat Lanese in Savannah. She was at least 3-1/2 and could be a little older. Pat had had her almost 3 years and they estimated 6-months when Pat got her. Lanie has had her 6 years since May 2011.

Lanie was very emotional and cried at several points through our conversation. I think Hattie is a wonderful dog who will do well with people who are home more than not and who will commit to lots of exercise.

                        02/07/18 from Sue Taylor:
                        Hi to all,

Tom and I went to see the Sweed’s this evening and had a lovely visit. They are truly dog people who love their dogs as we do ours.

Their home is lovely, very clean and they still have their dog feeding station left in the kitchen. They took us into their bedroom to show us some paintings of their previous dogs that they have owned.

Their yard is not huge but a good size for an Airedale to get some exercise. Their fence is very secure, made out of I would say some kind of black metal that everyone else has in the neighborhood. It seems that everyone has dogs.

I asked them about crating because their application stated that they didn’t use crates. They said they had no objection to them, in fact if they were to get a puppy they would get one to potty train them. I mentioned to them with Airedales and especially a rescue dog, not knowing their past, leaving them alone unattended while out somewhere could be dangerous for the dog and also they might come home to a chewed up house. They seemed to know exactly what I was referring to.

The question of heartworm came up and I said that if they were to get a rescue dog already on heartworm preventative would they have a problem with continuing with the monthly treatment and they said they would not. They don’t mind if a dog doesn’t have a reaction to the medication then that is fine with them. They told me that their dogs aren’t left outside by themselves, that mostly just go out to go potty and come in or if they are outside the dogs stay outside with them. I told them that it would only take one infected mosquito bite to give a dog heartworm and that treatment for it is very painful. Heather said she knew that it was. Robert said that they always have their dogs tested regularly for heartworm. To be honest, I don’t know if they really would give heartworm meds to their dogs but they did tell me that if they got a rescue from us already on medication that they would keep giving it to them.

They are a very warm and caring couple and I have no doubt that they would give any dog a very loving home and take very good care of them. Their dogs are a family member not just a pet.

I would definitely approve them as adopters. They are still keeping their options open. They have been in touch with a breeder up in Delaware that has an 8 month old puppy that they would sell to them, they also have a deposit on a puppy that would be ready to come home in April. They are open to either rescue, as they have always had rescue dogs, but keeping their options open.

I hope this is helpful and if you would, keep me posted on this couple. Maybe Higgins will have a new dog to have play dates with.

                        Love

01/20/18: James Huron is a prince. He picked up Archie from the LeCroy’s and drove him to Chattanooga to meet Karl Hartwig. James said Archie’s dad was with him in the front yard playing with a rubber Frisbee when James pulled up. They talked a little bit, Jonathan talking about all the good dogs he’s had. Archie’s an “ok dog.” James said he had to bite his tongue. All Archie had was his collar, his rubber Frisbee and a bag of food. He said Jonathan told him to give the new owner’s his contact info and James said he would. But he didn’t. Archie is better off away from him.

James & Tamara are considering an Airedale puppy and he was going to look up who the breeder was for Martha. I asked him to let me know who it is. We like to know about good breeders and we often know about bad ones. He said they might be interested in a rescue, so I’ve moved them to waiting for spare dale.

He got into bird seed and started shortly after that. They had been treating and his seizures were down to about 1 day a month, usually 2 on that day. Apparently, he had a seizure when they weren’t home and the vet believes he went into cardiac arrest. Henry was just over 4 years old. They were using CGB oil with pretty good results. Recommends it.
