      Subject: Curly NOW CHLOE

Chloe was adopted by Diana Gentile on Saturday. On their way home, Diana called me and told me that Chloe has a lump under her mandible. She called the vet’s office where Chloe and Mia (adopted by the Keils) had been boarded for a day and brought up to date on everything, and they had not noticed it because “neither dog was seen by a vet.” You know, when I tell them to check them out for everything, bring them up to date on all recommended vaccines, test for parasites and HW (both negative), start them on HW preventative and flea/tick preventative, and bathe them, I would think that a vet would have put a hand on them. Anyway, I told Diana to take Chloe to her vet today and that ARG will pay for the exam and whatever the vet says they need to do to figure out the problem. I asked Diana if it could maybe be a bad tooth, and she says that Chloe is missing a tooth, but didn’t say which one. Maybe it’s nothing, but we’ll need to figure it out.

        Hi Jackie,
Just giving you a One Week Anniversary update. . .
First, we decided to change Mia’s name. We tried to keep it as Mia for a few days but it was just so similar to Missy that it was not a good fit for us. Thankfully, she didn’t respond to it anyway (LOL) so this will not be a big learning curve for her. We love her brightly colored coat so we’ve decided to call her Ginger for the red head she is in color and disposition. She is adorable and beautiful and we love her. She and Samson are getting more and more attached each day. It’s a lovely thing. She is imitating him and learning fast how to be an energetic but well behaved little lady indoors – a.k.a. no furniture, no counter surfing, no begging, and no jumping on people. She has been introduced our cat and had no real interest in her one way or the other, But, rest assured, we are not letting our guard down in any way and continue to take necessary precautions.

She had her exam with our veterinarian today. She had yeast infections in both ears so we got the medication to take care of that. She also has what the vet is preliminary calling “an athletic heart” with only 60 beats per minute, not the characteristic 100+. By comparison, Samson is “typical” at 110 beats per minute. Right now we are going to simply chalk it up to all that great exercise she had running wild on the farm, but we will definitely have to watch it per the vet. Maybe she just has a huge heart and we should have named her “Secretariat” because she can run like the wind and jump mid air on a dime. Glad we have a very tall fence for this little gymnast. Anyway, all that to say that I was surprised her former vet did not pick up on this heart issue since heart rate is such a routine part of an examination and I wanted you to know in case Curly’s new family may want to have her checked out in this regard as well.

I have attached our National Puppy Day video, “Man’s best friends welcoming home their favorite man (and mine).

        Kindest regards! ~mk

What a wonderful report, Marguerite. I’m so happy for y’all. And for Mia!
BTW, the woman who got Curly just called me and she has a hard knot under her jaw. No one had reported it or noticed it! She’ll take her to the vet Monday and ARG will cover it. I hope it’s nothing!

Take care of that sweet girl! Can’t wait to see photos after she’s groomed. And do take her to your vet soon to get checked out health wise. She is up to date on everything, but was not seen by the vet at the clinic where she was. Nor was Curly!

Actually, she is much smaller but for ALL THAT HAIR!!!
She weighs 52 pounds, not 65. That’s just fine. (He is 78lbs.)
She is well nourished, and when I groom her she will be the petite dale she really is. Missy was 53 when we got her and topped out at 57.
She and Missy are so much like twin sisters of different mothers. Mia is very sweet and every bit the wild child I thought her to be.
When we came in the house she jumped right up on the kitchen chair and tried to get things off the table, LOL
She rides in the car perfectly just as they said.
She is mouthy, just like Samson, licking and nudging, very affectionate. Seems to be a perfect fit!!

03/23/18: Molly Pike will pick up Jude in Auburn, AL on Sat., Mar. 24, 2018, because she is going to be in southern AL for a funeral that day. JMC spoke to Tyler Teagle, rescueau@leecountyhumane.org and advised Molly that the shelter in Auburn is open until 4 but Tyler can stay till 6 to let her pick up Judah.

jmc offered Jude to Virgilynne Prewett but she and her husband and Airedale Mandy are in FL having some work done on their home there and will be there 4-5 more days. With Mandy in the car, it would not be a good idea for them to pick him up anyway.

They are interested in adopting him depending on how he does at Molly’s.

03/23/18: Offered Judah/Jude who’s in Auburn, AL. Can’t take him yet.

Mandy is 9 years old. She would probably like to have a dog to play with. She’s in Panama City. On the Bay. They’re in a HOA. Small beach that she can walk on. She doesn’t swim.

They are interested but they’re in FL having work done on their house – new driveway. It will be 4-5 days before they return to GA but they’ll have Mandy with them. That’s not good to pick up Jude with Mandy in the car.

He is not neutered yet, but if you want us to get him neutered we can. We are estimating maybe 2-4 years old.

If not neutered, the fee is $60 without being neutered and $120.00 with being neutered. If a health cert is required for transport it is $15. He has not had rabies yet. We can get that done after close of business today due to stray hold. These cost are only the cost of what all we have completed and copy of all will be given to you all. We can also give him a bath before he leaves….messy boy!

Just let us know if you want to be to set up the neuter. We could possibly get him done by Tuesday at the latest if our vet partners are not full on appointments.

We will need a copy of your 5013c and/or shelter license to set you up in our system along with contact name, address, number and any other info you would like to provide.

Thank you for responding so quickly and look forward to hearing back on what you would like us to do as far as neuter and if he needs health cert.

                Good afternoon,

We have an adult Airedale that has come in as a stray. His stray hold will be up at the end of business tomorrow (03/16/18) and we seeking rescue agency to insure a better home placement.

He is heartworm negative and we have vaccinated him for Bord and DA2PP. We have also applied flea control, deworming and heartworm meds.

We do not want to adopt out from here because he does have food aggression and some dog to dog issues. As you will see in the attached photos, he is skinny and not been groomed. His food aggression is worse in a kennel, but we are managing and working with him. As far as treats, he will sit for treat and try to shake, but snatches the treat.

Otherwise he is a sweet boy and did fine for his intake exam. Below is his initial intake notes:

Very dirty, very thin, seems to know sit. Teeth observed passively, but appear to be lightly damaged.

Look Test – Did not perform
                Sensitivity – Tenses
Squeeze Test – Seems to know shake, arguably shook the food hand but then went after it
Toy Test – Plays with toys, drops them
Food Test – Did not test due to behavior noted in kennel
Did not show any aggression during exam, but used caution around mouth.
Please let me know what other information we can give you for possible rescue option.

I have a video of him, but it will not let me attach to the email. I can facebook message with someone to share it. It is of him sitting on command and catching treats. We have tried the approach of saying “easy” to give treats, but he grabs it very rough. I don’t feel like he is trying to hurt me, but just very food anxious.

I have also included our Rescue Coordinator so he is aware, but is out of town until next week.

Thank you in advance for your time.

                      03/10/18 jmc:
                      Hi Jackie,
Other than crazy temperature fluctuations and very high winds we have faired well on the weather the past few weeks .
After five weeks Maggie has settled in to being a happy, goofy dog. She loves to go for long walks and still seems to prefer outside to inside but so do my dogs . She walks really well on the transitional leash even in public areas with a lot of distraction. She is very friendly with people. Other dogs on a leash are a trigger for her so she requires good handling skills in those situations. She understands “ Place “ and does this very well but needs reminders with high distraction ( not at all unusual for most dogs) . Below she is practicing in the house as well as outside with the distraction of the other dogs. You can see in the photo inside the house she still fixates a bit on over head lights but ultimately settles.
She prefers to sleep the night in her solid crate covered with a blanket and will pace and whine until I open the door and put her to bed. I think she has learned that it is a dark safe place .
She loves to get in the back seat of the truck and lay there with the door open. She still struggles being calm when vehicle is in motion. The calming cap does help by dialing down all the visual stimulus. We do short trips . She always does better on the way home after she has been for a walk or been to Woofers and is tired.
Maggie has done some daycare at Woofers. She actually loves to play with other dogs but has to be paired with dogs that don’t mind her rough “paws-on” play.
I think the woman you mention could be a good fit provided she can give Maggie plenty of exercise. She has trimmed up to a healthy weight from walking 3 miles a day but she is still a huge Airedale and easily 75 lbs. The exercise quickly put a stop to the nuisance barking and digging.
Would also not say she is kid safe. Her main issues would be children trying to grab something from her mouth or touch her paws. She will growl. I feel she is all talk as she has always backed down for me with just an abrupt “ah-ah” . She is bratty but not aggressive. With coaching of dog and children this could be managed.
I suspect she may need some sedation for a long transport , possibly just some Benadryl . She is still basically an anxious dog that will be frightened in new circumstances. She will pace , drool and visually fixate when frightened by new circumstances.

03/12/18 jmc: Maggie is interesting. She can be very fearful in new environments and then she can get easily over-excited and out of hand in a familiar environment. I think this is a result of never learning how to process new information and not being exposed to new things with good direction from an owner. She is also a bit of an independent dog that takes time to warm up and attach to someone. Given that she feels safe she does not have any sort of separation anxiety. She is very happy to be alone in her “space”.
Thus thinking about your description of the young couple in Raleigh, Maggie could be a good fit provided they take introduction to a new home and dog very slowly.
You mention a back yard with dogs on either side. This could work with gradual introductions so she is calm with the other dogs. At Woofers she can get over-excited and run the fence line and bark. But she responds to correction very well and does well with a playmate to direct her attention and energy. If she is bored and left in an back yard for long periods of time I suspect she will dig in a yard and bark. This is where I always recommend lots of physical and mental activities then they are fine to rest for 6-8 hours during the day. Would think a young couple would be up for plenty of exercise.
I always encourage people to consider training to learn how to fulfill there dog in the most constructive way and I would think there would be many dog activities and opportunities in the Raleigh area. I never really consider a dog as child safe without good training and rules for both dog and child so would encourage them to plan accordingly if children would be in the home ( theirs or others) .

Dianne, I saw your emails but got tied up yesterday. And I’m conflicted. Maggie has been with Cindy nearly 8 weeks now, and only in the past 2 weeks have we been actively trying to place her. I hate to make her wait another 6 weeks before placing her. Cindy has now said that she thinks Maggie can adjust to any situation. Would it be too difficult on you and Jeffrey to take her now because of your work schedule?

What will your new schedule be?

Hello Jackie, I just talked with Cindy and Maggie sounds like a very sweet girl. She mentioned that she sleeps in a crate at night because that is what she was used to, she said she likes the dark quiet space. It would be nice if she could get used to a regular dog bed. She doesn’t mind being in a car , but gets excited while in it. How long does the adoption process take, my only other concern is taking her and then having to work the extra shift , I work 7p-7a. Even though my husband will be home I would be gone 4 nights a week until the first week in May. What are your thoughts on that ? Thanks Dianne

Why do you want to adopt an Airedale Terrier? I have had an Airedale in the past , adopted from ARG. And I have lived with other Airedales adopted through a rescue from Connecticut . I loved Annie very much, I had her for over 12 years, she was a big part of my life.
What do you know about Airedales? What qualities appeal to you? I know they love to chase squirrels and birds and bunnies given the chance! I love how playful and loving and devoted they can be. I groomed Annie myself.

How many hours will the dog be alone daily? Not many at all 2 at the most, my husband is fully retired.
Where will the dog stay when you are at work or out of the house? Annie was never crate trained, she was ok left alone for a couple of hours or so. I was thinking of crate training if I got a puppy until it was potty trained .
Where will the dog sleep? In our room
Where will the dog stay when you are out of town? Visits a relative or friend
What activities would you like to share with your dog? Walking and playing in the yard, we also go camping and have a travel trailer , we always took Annie with us!
What will you do if your dog gets lost? Annie was never off a leash.I will have it chipped and I would search and send out alerts in our neighborhood lost and found Facebook page and other lost and founds in the area.
What dollar amount will it take to care for a dog annually? Money is not an issue. Annie was on several meds., not including her regular heart guard, frontline. Previcox, gabapentin, tramadol, phenobarbital , I can’t even tell you how much money was spent on her care. She was very well taken care of and loved.Because of her issues she was seen by our vet. often.

Describe previous dogs you have owned, how long they lived and what ultimately happened to them. I got Annie as a puppy from ARG, she was born blind and the breeder didn’t want her. She ended up in the rescue. My boyfriend at the time was contacted by ARG and asked him about fostering her. We took her in 2005 and once I had her I knew we would keep her. John said she was mine and my daughters.john and I had other Airedales. We got Teddy from Maine and we had a female Shannon which came from one of Johns litters. He told me he used to breed them. And I did see pictures of his puppies. John and I split up in 2006 and Annie went with me and my children. I had her until October 2017 when she got sick, she was very weak from her severe arthritis and had to be helped up to go in and out of the house. Her liver enzymes were elevated and she got very sick on the 28th and we rushed her to the emergency vet. They said her color was not good her gums were pale and said she wasn’tGetting enough oxygen, and at that point she couldn’t even walk, she was at the point of collapse. I had her for over 12 years. We made the decision to put her down peacefully at that time. I couldn’t bare to see her suffer. My heart has been broken. She had hip dysplasia as well and a deviated jaw, but she was my special girl.

03/19/18: jmc spoke to Jamie at Banfield in Wake Forest and they keep their animals up to date. They knew Bash, who died a couple of years ago and he was seen there routinely. They know Catfish, the beagle mix and he is up to date on everything. He has been checked for HW, but they do not buy their preventative from Banfield.

I then spoke to Dr. Frey, also a veterinarian and a neighbor, and she just raved about the Pendletons and their children and said that she has authorized heartworm preventative for them online. So they’re buying Heartgard online.

03/19/18: Bridget & Clay adopted Annie, an Airedale Mix, we had posted on Airedale Mixes’ page. I could never find anyone to do their home visit, and told her about this sweet girl in Robertsdale, AL.

I was actually hesitant to place an Airedale with her, bc she had a dale HBC and apparently has allowed her dogs to roam free.

Hope that this is a good home for this sweet Airedale mix.

Are Hypoallergenic Dogs Real or a Myth?
