We are all set for transfer of Lucy on Dec 14. I’ll let you know what time we will leave SC later in the week. If a time is better for you AM/PM let me know. I got our crate out of storage that our airedale used when he was a puppy. After we moved to SC from NJ he didnt want any part of it so we stored it. All cleaned and set up for Lucy if she wants to just chill out in it. Didnt put door on it since you said she doesnt like it closed. Invisable fence guy coming Mon Dec 16 to set up flags and assess Lucy and me and retrain me. Will have a week to work with her before our kids come for holidays. Looking forward to it. Let us know if we need to do anything else. Oh- the 300$ donation that is suggested can be done on the website? Is that all we have to do? Thanks again for answering all our questions. Joanne

Thanks-I stopped in our vets today to let them know about the records being sent to them. They are as excited as I am in meeting her.

I had my vet fax records to your vet,
I so not know if they understood the connection but I tried to explain Lucy, Airedale Rescue from South Point Animal Hospital in Durham to your account.
If you want more of her history, here is her vet in Greenville

Our Welsh Terrier wore a thunder shirt but mostly because she was deathly scared of thunderstorms. Would it be a good idea to get one for Lucy? Talked to Karl and his schedule next week is crasy so if still ok with you can we pick her up on Sat Dec 14. Will still give us a week and half to work with her untill Xmas guests get here and the Invisable fence guy would have enough notice to come to the house early on and work with her and me. Do I need to get a collar or will the one she has stay with her. I feel like a new mom bringing a newborn home even though that was years ago. Let us know. I’ll touch bases with you this evening. BL:
Delightful conversation with Joanne today, so we have spoken to both parties 🙂
She is as charming as I expected. They are eager but willing to be patient, especially as she will be having knee surgery next week and take “a few weeks” to get back to full activity.
No preference M/F age 2-5 yrs preferred.
I told her I will move her to approved on our internal message board, and keep her in mind when the right one comes along.
        And to check the website.
We talked some about our process, transportation (do we go pick up the dog?) etc.
The homeowner association requires e fence only b/c their backyard abuts directly on the golf course. Homes further back are allowed a tasteful wrought iron fence. They never let their others out in yard unattended but they enjoyed observing yard work.

I just talked to Joanne. She is going to call you.
She recently had knee surgery and will not be totally up to snuff for another few weeks. Her husband travels 3 days a week for work, so she is the major caretaker, home during the day, works some shifts just a couple times a month.

Oh, lucky Spencer to have such a great playmate. I love the look of the Irish Wolfhound, but know nothing about their personalities. I can just picture Spencer running under Grendell!

I can’t help you with the hand-stripper. I’ve never had my ‘dales hand-stripped. There was one in Memphis up till about 1999 or 2000. She was a former top Airedale breeder, Betty Hoisington of Eden Kennels. But to my knowledge there is no one here anymore. And I don’t know about Nashville. I’ll ask some of our folks and post on FB to our group. Maybe someone has a contact.

          Thanks, Maureen. Keep in touch.

Jackie – How nice to hear from you. I am so happy to learn that you have found a good placement for Maggie – poor dear certainly deserves a break!

Spencer will be a year old on July 17th! Can not believe it. He is a sweet boy – we had him out on Saturday to a neighborhood event “Porchfest” and I was gratified as we walked the neighborhood to once again have an Airedale that is very reliable with children and who does not over react to other dogs – it is sort of crazy – when he sees another dog he is enthusiastic but not at all aggressive – if they are aggressive he will simply sit and watch them go by!!

I am having one heck of a time with grooming. Spencer is a quality Airedale and I have always had my Airedales hand stripped. Just lucky enough I now understand to have always lived in a location where those services were readily available. Spencer was first groomed in Maryland when we had him home for Thanksgiving- he was young but looked terrific. I have searched high and low in the Nashville area – working with contacts through my vet and boarding kennel and I have not been able to get him groomed properly. I have paid big bucks for three of the worst grooms imaginable – not even close. Do you have a referral? Memphis is closer than Maryland and I am getting desperate to have him groomed properly! You said you had an active volunteer in the Franklin area – maybe she knows of someone? Any direction you can provide would be appreciated.

We continue to anticipate Airedale #2 – so sorry to hear that you have two dog aggressive females – they miss so much when they do not have a companion.

Spencer does have a best pal – Grendell – a ten month old 125 lb male Irish Wolfhound puppy. Grendell belongs to a co-worker of Richard’s and Neil brings him over to play as often as possible. He is so large that Spencer can walk under him but he is the gentlest boy ever – makes me think our 95 pound Airedale PJ came back as a Wolfhound. He and Spencer play great – lots of mouthing and chase but all very appropriate. We share the same vet and Dr. Lewis agrees that they are a great match by temperament.

Do keep us on your list and thank you again for all your efforts and for keeping a special eye out for a companion for our boy!

          Best regards, Maureen

Morning, Maureen. I was looking through our approved people and looked back at your info. First, please accept my apology for never responding to your thoughtful email below. In my mind I did. But I’ve searched and do not find that I did.

Your experience with Punkin sounds so much like our Maggie. Punkin is so fortunate that Joey recognized that she needed Molly. Your description of meeting PJ and how Punkin lit up is beautiful. You’ve been very fortunate and your Airedales have most certainly been fortunate.

Maggie stayed with her foster mom/trainer Cindy Green until May 20th and by that time, Cindy had done wonders with Maggie. She is a different dog and we placed her with a couple from WV who have a 5-y-o lab, and are continuing her training and respecting her needs. So far, it is a very good situation.

We still do not have an Airedale to fit your home. We currently have 3, a young male who was picked up as a stray in AL and is being fostered, but he is not great with other dogs. And we have 2 young females, both of whom are aggressive to other dogs. It just makes me crazy that people do not socialize and train their dogs.

I hope we can find the right one for you, Richard, and Spencer soon. Thank you for your patience and your love for Airedales.

07/24/18: Talked to Debra because she has not responded to Cindy Green re home visit tomorrow. When I called she said she had texted Cindy and told her she would call her later but she might be out of town tomorrow. She told me that she has a dental implant in the morning and was maybe going to Greenville tomorrow afternoon, but her dog Polly is sick and so she might not go to Greenville. We talked a while. I suspect, but cannot say for sure, that she was drinking. She talked on and on, repeating herself. I offered that we could do the HV next week, but she said she might still be able to do it tomorrow.

I got a good reference from her vet’s office. She keeps her animals up to date and takes really good care of them.

I’ve called her groomer but got vm.

They’ve had some changes in their family since they adopted Kate. They used a trainer. Their daughter and granddaughter moved back to Nashville and moved in with them. They brought their lab with them. Got a trainer and the trainer worked with Kate. The trainer says she has confidence issues so they’ve worked on praising her and being positive. She’s fine until they get to other dogs. Over the last month, her behavior has gotten stranger. She doesn’t want to go outside, or out of her kennel, initially would put her head up against the wall. Trainer thought that might be neurological issues. She gets like an Alzheimers patient. Terrified of storms.

Took her to the vet last week and she did X-rays that show a degenerated disc on her back. She was painful on her back and her belly. Urinalysis fine. They put her on Gabapentin and Carprofen anti-inflammatory twice a day. She’s bouncy and playful on those drugs. try for 10 days. Keep her still and don’t let her bounce and run.

She’s alone and has recently had a couple of accidents in the house pooped. They’re gone from 8:00 husband gets home 5:00 and 5:30. The trainer brought another dog to do some drills. She tolerated her daughter’s dog.

                  This week she’s been fine.

                  Super sweet.

Son’s dog gentle sweet GSD and bit her on the foot. Bit daughter’s dog.

Nicki Ivy, Dogspeak 101. is trainer.

She needs a new home. It’s breaking her heart because she wants to keep trying. The whole family has to be involved.

Loves to go in the car.

I told her to fill out a Relinquishment Form. Taking her for grooming is an issue. She sees the other dogs and wants to attack. They met at dog park.

07/22/18: Georgie Jones will meet Gina Mabie and take Harper home to see how she does with her dog and cat. (Harper is UNKNOWN with cats.) Fingers crossed!

N.B. Gina Mabie is under a lot of stress, not just because of Harper, but because her 7-y-o son has cystic fibrosis and has just recently been discovered to have CF-liver disease. This is a terrible diagnosis. Gina is a very strong woman and loves Harper/Maggie, but she’s having to keep Maggie crated to protect her other two Airedales. It’s a very sad situation. Plus, they are looking at moving soon. I don’t know what the impetus is for that or how imminent it is.

I hope this is a good move for Maggie and for Georgie!

07/21/18: Joyce has Tempest. She says he’s a wonderful dog, but was obviously confused. She said he paced the fence all the way around and immediately found the gates. He’s very smart. He won’t let her put a leash on him. Maybe it’s because he was tethered outside all the time. He ate fine. When he first went into the kitchen with her, he nudged her hand, so she fed him and he ate. He’s met both her little dogs, the Diva yorkie, and the Norwich. The yorkie doesn’t want anything to do with him, but the Norwich is fine. He’s come nose-to-nose with one of her cats and there was no problem. The other cats are keeping their distance, but he seems uninterested – no perked up ears, no staring.

He is strongly positive for heart worms. As for the mast cell tumor, she’s not sure it is a mast cell. His previous vet did a fine-needle aspirate, but apparently no pathology report. She plans to take him to her vet and have him just look at it without telling him it was suspected mast cell and see what he says.

I’ve told her ARG will pay for the vet visit and for whatever he thinks should be done. At his age, we’ll probably just do the slow-kill method for the heart worms.

                          Joyce is wonderful!

07/18/18: Great conversation with this funny woman. She is a hoot. She knows Airedales.
Hi, Debbie. Thank you for the lovely conversation this afternoon. I really enjoyed hearing about your dogs, horses, and your mom! It sounds like you have a great place for your animals – both inside and outside. As we discussed, we require our Airedales to be inside dogs and not be left unattended outside. I understand that you have an invisible fence and a dog door, but your Airedale Coco likes to stay inside, while your labs like to be outside. We would ask that you keep the Airedale you may adopt from us inside with Coco.

I’ve checked the distance between your house and the volunteer I mentioned to you, Cindy Green, who lives in Florence. She’s southeast of Florence, so it would be nearly an hour. She’s on vacation this week, but when she returns next week, I’ll see if she is willing to do your home visit. I may be able to find someone closer.

We talked a little about Kara. Kara is with a trainer in Greenville, SC, Rebekah Burgdorf, of Mountain Harmony Canine. You can see videos of Kara being trained on her FB page. https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=mountain%20harmony%20canine.

Kara’s background is unknown. The woman who had her said that her groomer had contacted her because the people who owned the Airedale could no longer keep her. We took her in – actually paid for her – and she was very skinny, very wild, untrained, aggressive to other dogs, and just generally a mess. She was in a foster home for a short time until she bit the resident female Airedale and the foster mom could no longer keep her.

She is spayed, heart worm negative, and up to date on all her vaccines and has now been in training for 3 weeks and probably will need another week at least before she’s ready for her new home. With your years of experience with Airedales, I feel certain that she would respond well to you and learn very quickly how to fit in with your pack. We would also pledge continued training for her if it is necessary.

I will be back in touch next week with a volunteer for your home visit. In the meantime, Debbie, let me know if you have any questions or wish to learn more about Kara.

And, Debbie, thank you so much for your offer of donations when we have special needs, such as we probably will have with this 11-year-old boy coming into rescue. That is so very generous of you.

I look forward to helping you find a great Airedale.
