08/23/18: Mark Chardi called me and said the sooner we can place him the better, because they are literally packing now and he may have to go out first and doesn’t want to leave his wife with 3 dogs. His mom is elderly and needs someone with her so they’re moving in with her. They can’t take a large boisterous dog. They’re taking the poodle. He asked lots of questions about who Rudi would go to, how we decide, whether we follow up with them, could he be kept informed, etc. He loves Rudi. Didn’t want Rudi to end up in a crate all day while people were at work. Assured him we would not do that.

Talked with Jonathan tonight. Sounds like a level headed young man who is ready for his own dog in his life. Has a good friend who is owed by an Airedale and that is what led him to ARG. Prefers a rescue, does not want to purchase a dog.
He actually owns the condo/townhome he lives in. Jonathan said he had a hard time with what he could input on the application. He lives in a very dog friendly community with walking and a dog play area. There is a dog park nearby. There are also cats. So, yes, you know what I am thinking, he needs a dog friendly dale and one that is tolerant of cats. He does not have a vet at this time but has friends with dogs and can easily get a referral for the dogs care.
The roommates are supportive of having a dog. One of the guys just moved out from his home and his parents kept the family dog; he really misses it.
He has found memories of the childhood dog and it seemed hard for him to talk about the loss.
I would recommend moving forward on a home visit.

I would recommend that the dog not be crated in the child’s room only because a 4-yr old is not capable of caring for the dogs needs if that were to arise in the middle of the night. Again, I will come back to what I wrote in a previous email, the dog they want is a needle in a haystack and will take time -the cat is what I see as a major problem.
I look at Trapp and at 85 lbs I would not hesitate to have him around a 4 year old petite child. He is a gentle giant and I see him truly missing children. I also think back to the Airedale mix Benedict that was placed with a family with 2 young children. He was exuberant and could easily knock a young one down. And he probably has.
With all that the bottom line from the home visit was to approve them with an explanation of finding the right dog to meet their family considerations (young petite child and a cat). I concur with approving them.

An Airedale is going to want to dominate this child and will not want to sleep in his room, in my opinion. As you well know, they look to us as their pack leader or at least as their equals. They would not see a tiny 4-y-o boy as an equal.I just got a FB message from Betsy also. She told me her concern about the small child, who she described as “frail.” I asked if the child appears ill, but she said he did not, just very small as she said in the report.

Hi Pat. I am going to answer the questions on the Home Evaluation Form in the e-mail. It requires Office to fill it out and I do not have that app.Lori Nelson and I went over to their home on Saturday afternoon at 1:00. We met them both and their son and their cat.
Home setting: It is semi rural – it is at the outermost part of town, farmland, that is now being developed into homes. Their house is on a well established street and their home is at the last part of the street facing the woods. It is a quiet nice older neighborhood. Their home was lived in but clean. The inside of the house has hardwoods and area rugs. There is a large piano in the small living room with many musical instruments all around, violins, guitars, etc.
The dog would sleep in a crate in the beginning. That crate will be in her son’s room. They hope that he will be able to come out of that crate after he has acclimated to their home and them. The dog will never be left outside alone. They have a huge deck that has a hand rail and metal bars around it, so the dog could never get out of it, but it will not stay out there.
They have a 4 year old little boy. He is a frail looking child, very very small. This was a problem for me and for Lori also. My Buddy at 7 months old could really hurt him if he jumped on him playing.
The family environment was very good. They conversed with us and themselves, always with a smile. Very respectful to each other.
They completely understand life-style compromises.
They have a sweet black cat. He is very friendly.
They have had a Wheaton that died last year. They are familiar with grooming, terrier attitudes, and training. The husband will groom the dog, as he did the Wheaton. So, I think they know what changes will happen with a new dog.
I explained to them that re-homing a dog is a stressful thing. I told them that there may be some accidents, especially in the beginning because of stress. They understand this. I told them that it may be a good idea to have a neighbor check in each day to take the dog to potty, if possible, especially in the beginning until he knows things are okay. They said they would do that. The dog will be walked twice daily on the nearby greenway, which is in walking distance of their home.
Lori and I both agree that they be approved, but, only the right dog. I told them that an Airedale that is younger than 5 years old, as they want, is an active playful dog and it worried Lori and I that the little boy is so small, if this is the right dog choice for them. I also told them that it would have to be a dog that got along with cats and children and it may take some time to find a dog to fit their situation.
Thanks for asking me to do the home visit. Lori and I have known each other for years, but this is the first time we have met face to face. We enjoyed each other’s company. She was a great help to come along and interacted with the family also and she made a suggestion that if they were to find the right Airedale that they could take it and the little boy to PetSmart for some basic training, so the child would know how to interact with the dog.

08/17/18: Update today from Jay after I emailed him. Kara is doing great. She has really bonded with him. She likes Brad too, but she’s really attached to Jay, follows him around. She loves being outside and uses the dog door. She likes to lie on the stone patio and watch for evil squirrels. She has met some friends who have come over and is friendly. He took her to the vet and she had hookworms and an ear infection, both of which required meds. ARG will reimburse him for those. When they were at the vet, a man with a golden retriever came in and she went ballistic. The man took his dog outside. He really has to work on this with her. She does best on her halti; he tried her with another collar, but she didn’t do as well. He’s going to keep her on the halti.
He sent photos of her and she looks great. He’s very happy.
08/16/18: This applicant lives very near Sheryl Redlin-Frazier a 2-time adopter who lives in College Grove, TN. She’s terrific for a HV.
08/04/18: Kara went to Sally & Bob who dropped her off at their kennel in Jackson, SC to meet their Trevor.
It was a short meeting. Kara did not like him at all and lunged and jumped at the fence separating them and he cowered in the corner afraid of her.
Jump to 08/06/18: Jay Yates wants Kara. On his application, he had originally asked for her but she was slated for the Athertons. When he saw she was available, he stepped up.
08/10/18: Jay drove to Jackson, SC to meet Kara and it was love at first sight. she came out and sat on him – on his feet – just as his previous Airedale rescued through Linda tegarden had done 6 years ago. She jumped right into his vehicle and off the went.

Ack. Never mind about George. He is the Kerry Blue rescue guy. I used to have Kerries before the Dales, and I still get their newsletter. So I mixed you guys up for a minute. Argh.
Anyway, happy to help whenever I can! And I wouldn’t mind having another Airedale, if you ever get in someone who needs a good home, or a foster mom. 🙂 Preferably a boy, since I have 2 girls already. But I’m sure there’s a long list of folks waiting, so no worries.

I just finished the call with Rebecca. I would recommend moving forward on the application for adoption.
She and her husband Sam are fully aware of leash walking and did so with their Wheaton before he passed away last year. They live near a greenway and would plan for 2 nice walks a day. Rebecca will be teaching and her hours will be 7-3; her husbands hours are a bit later than that.
We talked about Sam’s (husband) allergies and he had not had an issue in the past with the her family Airedales or the Wheaten. She is aware some dogs can have more dander than others. He is reactive to her parents labradoodle.
Things to consider is of course whatever dog is a good fit needs to child (4 yrs old) friendly and cat friendly. Her cat has been around dogs all it’s life. And, they had to teach their son to leave the Wheaton alone when it was have a seizure. Rebecca did say they would prefer a dog 5 or younger so that they hopefully have years with it and their son can grow up with the dog. A large Airedale is great but it would not matter either way.
Her cat is due for vaccines and has an appointment next week.
I did tell her to my knowledge there was not a fit for her family at this time as the 2 females available would not be the right dogs for their family (that is my assumption from reading the write-ups on Kate and Kara).
