08/28/18: I talked to the vet’s office a few min ago and the vet hasn’t had time to see Lacey & Zeus yet. I spoke to the kennel mgr who’s also a dog trainer (good!) and asked how they had done for the last few days. She says they definitely love human company. They’re pretty well behaved, but will jump up but not push on you. They’re eating well – Science Diet Advanced Fitness, peeing and pooping normally. They like the food, but if they’re eating and you come up, they’ll stop and come to you. She says they definitely like to rile the other dogs and will bark, but then they’re fine. No cage aggression. That’s encouraging. The vet is going to see them today so I hope to have an update later or at least by in the morning.

08/28/18: Sandy Sutton knows this man because he took classes from her for his Airedales! She says he is a “wonderful, very interesting man.. who treats his dogs very well… walks everywhere, very fit. She said he doesn’t need a home visit.

I called Wendell this morning and told him that he is approved!

My wife Meredith’s cell is 865 680-9852. Although she and I had talked about this endeavor, it was so pleasing to me to again hear her reaffirm her support for me. It was after a couple of years of my discharge from the Navy that we were married; she supported me then and in the 57+ years since then. (In civilian life I retired as a University Professor, I previously had retired from the Naval Reserves at the rank of Captain–I decided against trying to make the rank of Rear Admiral.)

Hello, again, Wendell. After our conversation as I was putting information into our database, I accidentally deleted my notes from our conversation. I remember all the important stuff, but don’t remember Meredith’s phone number. I’d like to have that on record, please.

By the way, I’ve called Dr. Bihl’s office. I know that clinic – Volunteer Vets. I spoke to Kayla who recommended you and Meredith with no hesitation. We’ve had lots of Airedales through their clinic over the years because one of our longest-serving volunteers lives nearby – Cyn Mobley. She helps us as needed (not with home visits), but she has created her own non-profit – At Risk Intervention, which serves as a way-station for rescued dogs who need a stop-off while being transported or for a short-term hold until a rescue can get them into a foster home. She works with all breeds and has saved many dogs in the last 20 years. She’s also an attorney and an all-around font of knowledge about rescue and dogs; plus she’s a writer.

08/27/18: This man is terrific. I spoke to him a good while. He’s sharp, smart, and quite healthy. He just got back from a 5-mile hike that he does every Monday. He and Winston, his last Airedale who died only 1 month or so ago, walked/hiked every day. He became very emotional talking about him and couldn’t speak for a minute. They sometimes drive 20-40 miles to hike in the mountains because you can’t take dogs on the trails in the Smokey Mountains. But they also went to a dog park. Winston was always the one to command respect. He also was a therapy dog visiting hospitalized patients at the VA.

His wife is not as active as he is because she has some arthritis but she is not frail and can handle an Airedale. They both work in the yard and around the house and try to stay busy every day.

We talked about the e-fence. He had trained his first Airedale to it so he had no problem training Winston to it. He understands that it may take more training with a rescue dog than with a pup. I told him that we require that they never leave their Airedale outside unattended with the e-fence and he said they never would. Even when they had a regular fence, their dog was not unattended. He said Winston never tried to breach the fence. Even when deer would come in the yard, he would chase them onto to the perimeter and come back.

I think these people are right for the right Airedale. I’ll find a home visit person.

Called their vet’s office and it’s the same vet that Cyn always uses – Volunteer Vet Hospital. Talked to Kayla and told her that the Liemohns want to adopt. She said they are great pet owners. They did everything recommended for their dogs and she would recommend them without hesitation. I mentioned his age and said it sounds like he’s very healthy and she said you can believe every word of it. He does all of that – walking, hiking, everything. Takes good care of himself.

08/26/18: Refer to posts on Lacey & Zeus. I contacted Daphne to see if she would be interested in fostering either or both of these dogs. She agreed. She visited them at the vet’s office in Headland (Walden Pond Animal Hospital) and said they are wonderful dogs. She would like to foster Zeus, the 5 yo male, with the intent of adopting him.

08/23/18: Mark Chardi called me and said the sooner we can place him the better, because they are literally packing now and he may have to go out first and doesn’t want to leave his wife with 3 dogs. His mom is elderly and needs someone with her so they’re moving in with her. They can’t take a large boisterous dog. They’re taking the poodle. He asked lots of questions about who Rudi would go to, how we decide, whether we follow up with them, could he be kept informed, etc. He loves Rudi. Didn’t want Rudi to end up in a crate all day while people were at work. Assured him we would not do that.

Send email and follow up text to Maddie Buchta.
                          Also thinking of Virgilynne Prewitt.
Also thinking of Diana Gentile bc she wants another one and she is in Greer also. But, she has issues with Chloe being destructive – which is probably because she’s alone a lot. Don’t know that it would be good to have another so soon.

Subject: RE: ARG Application from Jonathan Hanks

                                  HI Jackie –

Talked with Jonathan tonight. Sounds like a level headed young man who is ready for his own dog in his life. Has a good friend who is owed by an Airedale and that is what led him to ARG. Prefers a rescue, does not want to purchase a dog.

He actually owns the condo/townhome he lives in. Jonathan said he had a hard time with what he could input on the application. He lives in a very dog friendly community with walking and a dog play area. There is a dog park nearby. There are also cats. So, yes, you know what I am thinking, he needs a dog friendly dale and one that is tolerant of cats. He does not have a vet at this time but has friends with dogs and can easily get a referral for the dogs care.

The roommates are supportive of having a dog. One of the guys just moved out from his home and his parents kept the family dog; he really misses it.

He has found memories of the childhood dog and it seemed hard for him to talk about the loss.

I would recommend moving forward on a home visit.
