Rec’d from Jackie Rowan 10/11/18
Hello Jackie,Hi Jackie,
I am ready to start looking for another Airedale. My mother in law is doing much better. My border collie is also doing well, but sleeps most of the time because of his age. I would prefer a male, one who is social, but not overly active. I realize it may take awhile, but I am prepared to wait for the right dog.
Thanks,
JackieOctober 17, 2018 at 4:10 pm in reply to: Private: Julie Slenker – Kennesaw GA 30152 ADOPTED BELLA-JO #2017010/17/18: Hudson has been ill for weeks. Initially, he had some lameness which their vet diagnosed as being caused by walking on hardwood floors; said it was a lameness caused by affluence! So he went for 5-6 treatments on a treadmill. It did nothing. Then he started not eating and had other symptoms and he has now – this week – been diagnosed as having multiple myeloma. He will need chemo the rest of his life – a protocol of Prednisone and Melphalan. See http://www.vcchope.com/resource-center/multiple-myeloma-dogs

October 15, 2018 at 10:50 pm in reply to: Private: Marley fka Molly, 2.5 y-o Female, Kennesaw, GA #2016310/15/18: Connected Kim Kelly-Cameron with Jennifer Calvert so they can talk about Molly.
10/11/18: Talked to Ed. He’s a funny guy, hard to stay focused. Ed lives alone in an apartment and works nights 4 days a week in maintenance/security. So he’d be home during the day with his Airedale but asleep a lot of that time, then the ‘dale would be alone at night.
He’s moving to Asheville area, Yadkinville – hopefully in the next 6 months. Has a job already lined up that includes an apartment.
He is also looking at having a knee replaced. Went in August and you have to take a breathing test. he has a low-grade infection and then he rescheduled for the week of Florence. Dr is back and he is to go back soon. Probably will not have the knee operation until December. Get the neighbor home and in rehab. But once he has the knee replacement, he will be off for recuperation for 12 weeks! Right now it is painful to walk on concrete but he does it every night.
I have reservations about this man. He did not list a veterinarian and I forgot to ask for one. My inclination is to hold off until it’s closer to his knee surgery, so that we can possibly place an Airedale with him when he has recuperated a few weeks at least.
But I will get a home visit if possible.

I’m so sorry you lost your Fairfax, but he lived a long life and was obviously much loved by you and Phillip. One of our volunteers will be in touch within the next week to talk to you and update our information. Thank you for contacting us and we appreciate your interest in adopting a rescued Airedale.
10/12/18: JMC spoke to Carrie at Rosie’s (Maggie’s) vet’s kennel. They are full because of Hurricane Michael evacuees’ pets. Maggie is doing fine and loves everyone and wants to be petted and in your face, but she is developing cage aggression and needs to be out ASAP!

October 12, 2018 at 1:10 pm in reply to: Private: Marley fka Molly, 2.5 y-o Female, Kennesaw, GA #2014010/12/18: Molly is heart worm NEGATIVE! She does have a chip and Jennifer will send me the number and Molly’s previous medical records. She weighs 70.4 lbs, not 80! She was great at the vet’s. They all loved her.
October 12, 2018 at 1:09 pm in reply to: Private: Marley fka Molly, 2.5 y-o Female, Kennesaw, GA #2013910/11/18: From conversation with Jennifer Calvert:
What can you tell me about her original owner. Had she been with them since puppyhood? She was born in Miami and her owner passed away. A man had her. A friend decided to take her and had her 2 weeks and realized they couldn’t keep her and she’s noisy and liked to play. Posted her on Nextdoor. Met her and fell in love. Family brought to Kennesaw.Chews everything, Tell her to drop it, she will. Kids’ toys she thinks are hers. Runs loose, Runs loose? You mean when she gets out or is she good off-leash? She gets out if they forget to close the door. Runs to car because she loves to go for rides. She stays in the house most of the time. If the other dog is outside she’ll go out.
Their Mini-Schnauzer/Terrier ix is about 25 lbs. The people who kept her for 2 weeks had a golden retriever and mix-schnauzer. They all got along great. She’s more gentle with the smaller dogs. She’s very good at being gentle.
She doesn’t jump on the child. She jumps on Jennifer. Very excited to see mom. New people she’s fine. She’s great at the groomers. They haven’t been to dog park.
What kind of leash/collar? Harness that she doesn’t love but used a leash and collar. Rabies tag. Name tag.
Describe a typical day for Molly. Does she greet other dogs while on leash? Has she ever been to doggy day-care? How does she react when people knock on your door/ring your doorbell? Does she jump on small children?
A typical week day; they leave early for work. At first, she was loose with the other dog. She chewed up the couch. Already chewed on. Put bitter spray on it. Anxiety from being gone, new noises. They started crating her and she’s great in the crate. Sleeps in the crate. Doesn’t cry or whine unless they’re home and haven’t let her out. How long alone 8 hrs.Time frame – realtor. Pack your house and get ready to move.
No heart worm meds since they’ve had her. Asked Jennifer to take her to vet and have her tested for HW.
Does she have a chip? Ask to scan for microchip.
10/10/18: JMC Email to Lana after telephone conversation 10/09/18:
Hi, Lana. It was nice talking to you yesterday and I appreciate your time and your enthusiasm for adopting an Airedale. As I’ve gone back through your application, I found that I have some concerns that I’d like you to respond to.Your vet’s office, Holly Pond Animal Clinic, said that Bentley hasn’t had a rabies shot since 2015, though he did come in for a dental cleaning recently. They did not have records on Dixie, but did on Danielle. What vet did you see with Dixie; where has Bentley gotten his shots? Where are you having him tested for heart worms or buying heart worm preventative?
You mentioned that you were planning on fencing your yard, but I failed to talk to you about electronic fences, which you mentioned in your application. Airedales have been known to breach an e-fence when they’re going after prey or curious about the dog or cat next door, but then not come back IN the fence because they’ll get zapped. Dogs have been stolen from yards with e-fences. Another problem is other animals can come into the yard. Or, as in a case we had in ARG, a child kicked a football into the yard where an Airedale was and when the child ran into the yard to retrieve that football, the Airedale bit him. Even with an e-fence, ARG would require that your Airedale never be left outside unattended.
I would be very concerned placing an Airedale, whose history with dogs is unknown, with one as small as a tea-cup Yorkie. How do you plan to keep your Yorkie safe?
I am very concerned about your family member, June, who has dementia and is on a walker. You said this is a temporary situation; however, it screams “Danger.” You said your ‘dale would not be with June unsupervised. It takes only a second for an Airedale to jump up on someone. With June’s mobility issues, I think she could be easily knocked down or hurt by a big, untrained, boisterous Airedale. And with her dementia, she could unknowingly do something to scare or provoke the Airedale. I believe you would be wise to postpone adopting a large dog until June is no longer staying with you.
You mentioned that you have rheumatoid arthritis but that you would walk your Airedale in the morning and your son would walk her at night. How far and how long do you normally walk? A 2-y-o Airedale will need lots of exercise – at least 30-45 minutes twice a day. Can you commit to that?
Tell me how you plan to train your Airedale. What methods do you use? Rosie has absolutely no training and is an energetic, boisterous, wild child who will need constant, consistent training and requires a lot of physical and mental stimulation. A flexi or extendable leash is not a good idea with an untrained dog, as they can start running and get up a head of steam and pull you off your feet.
We know that Rosie needs a home and the sooner, the better. But we do not want to put her in a home that doesn’t really suit her.
I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
Jackie

October 9, 2018 at 1:49 pm in reply to: Private: Livi, 5-1/2 yo, Newport, NC (returned by Erin Johnson) #2012110/09/18: Erin Johnson called me today crying and said that Livi bolted out of the house this morning as she was getting the children out the door to go to school. She had to leave and take the kids anyway. She got back home and Livi had something – a rabbit maybe – trapped under their RV. As she was calling Livi, a woman and child walked by with a puppy on leash. Livi ran to the pup and attacked it. Erin was able to get Livi off and she said the pup was okay – had a little drop of blood on its neck. She said she had already made an appointment to have Livi PTS. She said she’s constantly stressed afraid that Livi will hurt someone or kill another animal and that she felt it would be irresponsible to give Livi to someone else. I agree with her. She was devastated but resolved that this is the right decision.

Subject: Re: Problems with DinahMorning, All. Eric, I am sorry that Dinah is so fearful and anxious. I have copied Cindy Green, a wonderful trainer and ARG volunteer who lives in Florence, SC, about 2 hours from you. Cindy has worked with several of ARG’s Airedales. I feel certain she can help you with Dinah. From your description of Dinah, this will not be a quick process, but one that will take patience, consistency, and dedication. It will help for Cindy to know Dinah’s background, which you or Brad can provide because she is a SOAR dog.
If Cindy cannot help you with Dinah, I feel certain she can recommend someone in your area who can. We wish you the very best with Dinah.

I’ve copied Jackie (ARG) and Lynn (SOAR) since they will be much better at providing guidance and can better connect you with resources that may be able to help. I’m sure everything will work out with their help. Dinah is a smart girl but still in a ‘new’ world.

BradWe are having some behavior problems with Dinah
It looks like she is afraid of almost everything. Noises, loud talking, other dogs, dumpsters, golf carts especially gasoline powered ruslling leaves, wind, thunder, garage etc.
And she does not know how to tell us she needs to go outside. So let me go thru a day.
Gets us up early, at or before daylight, then I get up get dressed and put socks on. She gets excited and gets in the way, jumps up and down, races to the door and I hook up her leash and off we go.
She seems to prefer early and not much activity outside.
IF I use the short leash she stays by my side and we were up to 1 ½ miles to 2 miles, Then I used a long leash and she just trots off at a good pace. She ran one day and got a full head of steam and the leash ran out and jerked me and I sprained a ligament in my knee, Doc said 8 weeks to heal . No more long leash.
What is she afraid of.
· Garage door opening noise,
· Noise of the hot water heater in the garage.
· Anything that is out of place in the garage.
· If I brush something and that makes a noise Tail tuck in and scamper away.
· Other dogs, if closer than 10 feet she growls and tail tucked in. Have to wrap arm around her and tell her all is ok. She has made no doggie friends.
· She does not like the outside deck unless I am with her. Seems that the wind in the trees bother her.
· Golfers yelling and having fun on the course.
· More below when we evacuated for hurricane Florence see below. She will not go outside in the afternoon, Will not go thru the garage, Totally different than in the morning. Can go outside via the deck, but she sits and says no. Sometimes with coaxing she will go down the stairs.
She will go out after dark.
Three times in the last 4 weeks she has sneaked off into another room and done her business during the day. Twice for pee break in the bedroom and a #2 in the dining room. (She did two of these the first week) Perhaps she was not trained to tell the owner that she needed to go outside.
We have a coffee table in the great room, She has eaten paper off if it, Got a book and destroyed it, Chewed up newspaper, and magazines if they are left on the table or under it. We have been trained to not leave things there
If we leave a cardboard box she will start to eat that.. Done multiple times so we are now trained to not leave them on the floor.
She will go with me on the deck and let me groom her outside with the clippers. Seems to like that.
We Evacuated to a hotel in Florida for Hurricane Florence. Got a large room, moved the crate in and put her in it and we went out. 20 minutes later we got a call that she was barking a lot so we went back, Could not leave her alone.
In am would take her out . She is excited. Open the door, one step out and freeze, I’m not going down the hall. Lots of coaxing got 20 feet so she could see outside and then it was ok. Lots of dogs at this hotel so sometimes she gets upset at them so had to plan outside at different times.
There was a hiking trail there about 20 feet wide and we went on that one afternoon, Then she turned around to come back. She never would go near that trail again. No I ain’t going that way. Walked her to the beach. Was afraid of wave noise and a flag was flying and the cord was flapping against the pole and that scared her big time.
She traveled well in the van in her crate. She does not react to the doorbell, or ‘protect her home’ she has no watch dog traits. (Unusual as that should be a natural trait)
I suspect that at some time she was traumatized by something – don’t know what.
Anyway that is a brief outline of what we have seen in the past month.
Any tips?
Eric
