November 13, 2018 at 10:53 pm in reply to: Private: Jake, fka Rafiki, 6-y-o Male, fostering w Alyssa Adams #2039611/13/18: I got some records on him. I’ll send them out to you tonight so you can advise.
He really is a great dog. A bit loud in the back yard, won’t come when he does not want to, but that is the worst I’ve seen.
— Alyssa
11/13/18 Mandie Rytych sent me a FB message and said “Rafiki has killed 3 cats. Their owners live on her street.” And he can jump a 6-ft fence!
910-545-8489
He was well-loved. They made the fence 8 ft and moved things away from the fence. He would run through a fire for a cat. He stayed in the house and they let him outside supervised. Never left outside for long periods at all. Accident, they opened the door and he took off and they were working on their house from hurricane damage. All three cats belonged to thee same person. Very difficult situation.
11/12/18: Changed Loretta’s name to Holly.
November 13, 2018 at 10:20 pm in reply to: Private: Griffin, fka Hinkley, fka Scruffy, 2-y-o Male, Adopted by Richard & Lorie Smith #2039311/13/18: Over the last couple of weeks, Jena and I have talked, Jena and Sue have talked. Hinkley is very excitable and barks at everything he sees inside and outside. Jena texted me and asked for a trainer who knows Airedales. I gave Jena some ideas and then connected her via text with a trainer, Catherine Abramson, who has been training for 50 years and has an obedience club in Lake Lanier. Cathy messaged me last week that she still has not heard from Jena.

November 13, 2018 at 7:23 pm in reply to: Private: Jake, fka Rafiki, 6-y-o Male, fostering w Alyssa Adams #2039211/13/18 From Alyssa: I am fostering Rafiki! Only now he is ‘jake’. Jake is a great dog. He will make someone a grand companion. Jake is smart, independent, but loves his attention! He’s safe roaming the house, Polite, and learning not to pull on the leash on walks.
November 13, 2018 at 4:30 pm in reply to: Private: Webster, fka George, 4-y-o, Training w Cindy Green #2038911/13//18: JMC spoke to Angela, owner of Oak Ridge Kennels. Her comments about George:
Angela. She did not see any active hot spots. They are giving him a bath. She doesn’t see any fleas. He’s very dirty. Flea bites vs hot spots. Nothing bright red. He’s snappy for a bath. He’ll walk up to you to get a treat. Not biting to hurt, a playful bite to get a treat. He’s very strong and pushy dog and wants to be on you. He’s great in the exercise yard. He comes when you go out to get him. He’s not really aggressive. He’d knock kids over plus he’s mouthy. She trains retrievers and has for 10 years. He’s fine there through Thanksgiving. If they find ticks (as Nancy said he has on his face!), they’ll remove them. But she didn’t see any. Check. Open till noon on Sat. and 3-6 Sun.They charge $700/month to train in obedience and she thinks he would need 6 weeks.
Send him to Cindy Green!
November 13, 2018 at 2:58 pm in reply to: Private: Webster, fka George, 4-y-o, Training w Cindy Green #2038511/13/18: Spoke to Jessie at Oak Ridge Kennel. She said George is doing ok. Seems to have settled in a bit. They can give him a bath and will check to see if he has a heavy infestation of fleas/ticks. They have no flea/tick meds there. I asked if there was any way they could get him some Frontline or something and she said she’d have to talk to her boss-lady. She will call me back.

November 13, 2018 at 2:37 pm in reply to: Private: Webster, fka George, 4-y-o, Training w Cindy Green #2038311/13/18: Email from Nancy Chalmers on 11/12/18 is first notification we had that he had fleas, ticks, hot spot, had a muzzle, and had been kept on a tether.
We are sorry that you couldn’t keep him as well. It is not uncommon for surrendering owners to lie or just leave out things about their dogs. We all had reservations about placing an Airedale with you because of your MS, but after Heather Hogston did your home visit and heard how experienced you are with Airedales and that your husband would be the one mostly caring for the dogs, we decided to adopt to you. We were told George would jump up but as soon as you told him “no,” he would stop. We knew he lived outside but we also were told that he could be in the house and was house-broken.
We are going to move him to a vet’s office ASAP since you’ve now told us he has fleas, ticks, and hot spots. There’s nothing that can be done for him for those issues in a kennel, except for a bath. They don’t even have any flea/tick preventatives at their kennel.
Thank you for following up.

On November 12, 2018 at 5:47 PM Nancy Chalmerswrote: Hi Jackie,
I wanted to write you since we really never talked. We feel so bad about George. We both feel guilty that we couldn’t keep him. I was prepared to and hopefully all the love and kindness we could have provided would have calmed him down. But… last night when my husband said he had watched George all day and realized there was no way we could keep him. Craig only told me at 9:00pm last night. He was constantly going from Craig back to me. We think he was put in the back yard and just left. He acts like a dog that has had no attention. He is very starved for affection. These people who surrendered George didn’t tell you the truth. They made it sound like they took him to the dog park and took him on hikes etc. I don’t believe this was the case. George has about a 3 1/2″ collar on with a huge hook. Craig told me when he picked George up, Bryan told him he was on a run with a chain. (I am surprised my hubbie didn’t bust him in the head right there.) He cries all the time, whether he’s inside or outside. We were talking and Craig said he thought he might’ve been in pain. Anyway, he has a few ticks on his snout and when Craig tried to remove them George showed his teeth. He also has some hot spots on him so he probably has fleas. He is also skinnier than he should be.
I want you to know these reasons are not why we couldn’t keep him. He had an appt to go have a bath, get groomed and I bought him some frontline a bed and a crate. I would have taken care of him but I am on a walker and Craig could just see the future. Anyway, I have told you all of that before but I wanted you to know his “problems” for the next person. He is sweet as he can be and got along great with my dogs, a Lab and Wire Fox terrier. I don’t think he is aggressive in any way BUT Kathryn sent along a muzzle with his bed and toys (three unused tennis balls) ??? Whatever that means. Also, he would just stand around. He finally felt comfortable enough to lay down. He also cried most of the night. I am sorry to be choppy but I keep thinking of things you should know. If I think of anything else, I will let you know.
Also, Jackie from the Charlotte Airedale club posted on FB the wrong town he was in. I didn’t want to correct her on FB so maybe you can tell her.
Here is where George is:
Oakridge Kennels 1110 Unionville – Indian Trail Rd W.
Monroe,NC 704-289-5828
She said he was in Seven Lakes area near Pinehurst, NC. He is nowhere near there . I think Sue is in Pinehurst.
Anyway, we are both still crying when we think about George. Hopefully, you can find someone who will love him and give him a forever home.
We would love to hear about his future and see him with an Airedale “hairdo”,
Thanks so much,
Nancy- This reply was modified 6 years, 2 months ago by Jackie Cash.
