06-16-22 Charleigh asked on the 10th if she could wait till Monday, the 13th to let us know about surrendering Hugo. She never got back to us and has not responded to texts or phone calls. Sigh.

Hello, again, Charleigh. Thank you for taking the time to talk to me about Hugo and your wish to relinquish him to ARG. We understand how difficult it can be to train an Airedale pup, especially one who has been separated from its mother and littermates at such a young age.

I don’t think we’ll have any problem finding someone appropriate to adopt Hugo and we will start checking through our approved applicants and former adopters immediately.

Please ask your vet, Banfield, to email Hugo’s complete medical records to us at info@airedalerescuegroup.com or fax to 815-301-2959. If you have his registration and puppy papers from the breeder, please also forward those to us. We do not provide those to adopters, but we like to know where the pup came from. It helps us if we encounter other Airedales from the same breeder.

As we discussed, for the time being, try keeping Hugo on a leash even in the house so that you can correct his behavior before he tries to bite or tries to poop in the house. Make him sit. Use your boyfriend’s stance and tone to correct him; no spanking. Keep his time-outs to 10 minutes or less; after that time, he no longer associates being in the crate with whatever he has done. Airedales do best with praise for doing what you ask rather than punishment for what you didn’t want.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Otherwise, we will be back in touch soon.

I don’t know where to begin. Hampton was surrendered by Jim Ciocola the end of April 2022 and was adopted by John & Maggie Finneran in Southport, NC, friends of Lin Wetzel’s.

Too much history to enter right here. See the Finnerin’s post.

06-11-22 Charleigh sent text in response to my phone call & text to her:

            Good morning!
So I am a competitive gymnastics coach and we have team tryouts today and tomorrow so I’m super slammed and my mom is actually helping me out watching him.
After our phone call, I cried and cried and cried all day long. I don’t want to make the wrong decision but it’s a big decision. Is there anyway we can hang tight through the weekend? Now that you’ve found him somebody and it’s real, I just want to really think about it one last time and I can let you know on Monday?

I promise I won’t string anybody along after the weekend, I just really really want to be sure.

Also, if I decide to send him to a new home, I’d really like to meet her if at all possible.

            My response to Charleigh:

Morning, Charleigh. I understand how difficult this decision is for you, but you must be the one to make the decision. Hugo can’t. Hugo depends on you to make the decision that will ensure he has a happy, physically and mentally stimulating life. He must be taught how to be a valued member of the family whose pack (people) are always thrilled to see him and engage with him. Airedales respond with enthusiasm to training with their family — not Boot Camp — because they learn what actions please their person and they love to please.
The woman who wants to adopt Hugo has had 3 Airedales. Her last, Callie, was a rescue also from another Airedale group several years ago. Unbeknownst to the rescue group, and un-revealed by the previous owner, 11-month-old Callie had seizures. Beth, the adopter, kept her and did not give up on her even though Callie was
on meds every day of her life and having seizures every day of her life, until Callie died at the age of 8-1/2 of cancer. To say she was a devoted mom to Callie is an understatement.
Beth is an artist and is home all day. Her mom, who also is an Airedale-lover, lives with her.
Beth is hesitant to meet you because she thinks it will be too emotional to see you give Hugo to her. We also recommend a “clean” break. We do not encourage the adopter and previous owner to stay in touch as we have found that can get out of hand. Instead, we recommend all contact be between you and ARG and the adopter and ARG. We will be happy to provide updates if you wish. We maintain contact with the adopter, of course, to make sure the pup is being well-cared for.
We will honor your wishes, Charleigh, as you decide what is best for Hugo and you. You cannot have a satisfying relationship with Hugo by avoiding him.
Good luck this weekend. I hope your girls shine. Call me.

              To Beth 06-09-22:
06-08-22: Good summary of Hugo per Charleigh (sent via email to Beth Stafford):
Hi, Beth. I’ve attached a photo of the little guy. OMG, he’s so cute. The owner got him as a 6-wk-old pup so he lacks proper socialization and didn’t learn bite inhibition from his mom or littermates. But he is all Airedale. He loves other dogs and every person he meets, but he’s already the boss of the house over the single 25-y-o woman who hides from him in the bathroom or sits in her car to keep away from his nipping. She spanks him with a magazine to get him to mind! I told her that Airedales do not respond to punitive corrections. She says he freaks out in the crate and she uses that for time-outs, and I suspect it’s for long periods of time. She keeps him in there until he stops barking. She says Hugo doesn’t nip at her boyfriend because he’s tall and stands over Hugo and tells him NO in a stern voice. I told her to work on that herself and to keep Hugo on a leash in the house so that she can stop any unwanted behavior before it starts.

Hugo was neutered last week and has no problems with his incision and has been vaxed and is up to date. He eats well, loves to ride in the car, loves to go on walks, loves to cuddle, and loves to play. She claims to walk him 2x a day 2 miles each time.

She has not used any professional trainers for him because they’re too expensive but she’s read a lot online and nothing she has tried works for him and she said: “he’s mean to her.” Sigh.

We absolutely want him in an Airedale-experienced home with someone who knows how to train that pup and how to teach him to be gentle. I hope that’s you, Beth!

Let me know what you think. Thank you!

06-09-22 Interviewed both Kurt & Luz Hasson. She works part-time 3 to 5 days per week for 3-5 hours each day as a caregiver. He works from home a lot; he’s a field engineer for emergency power providers.

They haven’t had a dog since their large English Lab died in 2020. He was a great dog, very obedient and friendly, but stubborn. He knew his commands and was well-trained. He had liver disease and died at age 10. They had just moved down to GA and had only seen this vet at Best Friends for about a year. They don’t remember what brand of HW meds or flea/tick meds he was on; they got it from the vet in NY and then online after moving to GA.

They have a large backyard with privacy fencing on 2 sides and a chain-link on the back so that it’s more natural-looking with their bird feeders and bird baths. Their house is open completely for their dog and they still have supplies – leash, collar, beds, etc., for their next dog.

They want an Airedale because one of Luz’s associates has one and she loves that dog. We talked about how different Labs and Airedales are and I emphasized their prey drive and their independence, intelligence, stubbornness, need for training and boundaries, etc. They asked good questions and seemed to accept all that.

They say they are in good health and hike weekends, walk daily 1 to 1-1/2 miles, kayak, etc. They never would let their dog off leash and there is a leash law in their town. They would supervise their Airedale when it’s in the backyard and would never leave it alone in the backyard and leave their home.

I will check references and find a home visit volunteer.

06-08-22 JMC sent email to Travis Stuckey:

Dear Mr. Stuckey. We have received your application to adopt an Airedale Terrier; however, we will not be able to consider your application because of the following:
The address you listed is not a residence.
Your responses to the questions as to why you want to adopt an Airedale terrier and what you know about them/their qualities are inadequate.
You answered that you have limitations that will prevent you from running after or lifting a 50-70 pound dog.
You responded that you did not agree to pay the adoption fee of $400.
We do not believe an Airedale would be a good fit for you.

                        Thank you,

By submitting this form, I certify that the information I have provided is true and accurate. I am physically, emotionally, and financially able to care for an Airedale. I understand that Airedales require both physical and mental stimulation to thrive and I will provide both. I understand that Airedales that come into rescue may not have been trained or socialized properly and may need extra time, patience, and care to adjust to a new environment. This may include the need to attend pet obedience classes to help build a better bond with the new dog in the home. I understand that proper food and veterinarian care can be costly, and I am able to meet these needs. I agree that Airedale Rescue Group may check my veterinarian, groomer and personal references, as well as, my landlord, if applicable. Home visits will be conducted prior to and following an adoption to ensure the safe-keeping of the Airedale. ARG reserves the right to decline adoptions. ARG reserves the right to reclaim any dog who, in our judgment, appears neglected, abused, unkempt, or unsafe. ARG reserves the right to reclaim any dog for non-payment of the adoption fee at any time.: I hereby agree, and consent
