We don’t have a fence, but we have a back yard and side yard. No pool. The neighborhood we’re in is dog friendly, and we have lots of walking trails. There’s also a dog park just a short drive away.

Airedales are smart and kind dogs. They have enough energy to take on hiking trips, but not so much as to be tearing up the furniture. We had an Airedale mixed with a sheep dog named Sheba, and she was my favorite dog. Also Bryce has a dog allergy, so a hypoallergenic breed is a must.

Mostly out of the cage; I work from home.

Up at 7:30, a walk around the neighborhood, then 9-5 at the desk with breaks for food and walks. At five we very often go to the park for frisbee golf, the same park that has the dog park.

Depending on the bathroom habits of the dog: worst case in the kennel, medium case in the garage (which is temperature controlled for house plants), best case roaming freely. We will have to see how the dog responds.

Walks every day around the neighborhood. Hopefully the dog likes to run; we are a house of runners. We also do regular hiking in the smokies and at the frisbee golf park. Plenty of opportunity for exercise.

If I caught him peeing, I would try and carry him outside. I think the question isn’t what to do when he pees inside, but rather what to do when he pees outside. I would give him treats every time he does his business outside to encourage him to go out. We’d also put a bell on the door for him to jingle when he needs to go.

We have a pretty large community of friends that take care of each others pets, and sometimes kids. If we couldn’t find someone to watch the dog, and if we couldn’t take the dog with us, then we would stay home.
      Previous Pets

My first pet was as a kid, a white mouse. She died tragically.

Our family had 6 dogs, most that lived long natural lives. 1 ran away, none were hit by cars. We also had 8 cats, most of which also lived very long lives, but 2 of the indoor/outdoor ones died. One by a car, one falling down a window well in the winter.

I had 15+ snakes in highschool and hundreds of rodents (food). I worked in the fish and reptile room of a pet store. I don’t do snakes anymore (I’m a vegan now) but I acquired quite a few of them in aggressive conditions and every one of them became human friendly.

I’m answering “No” to the dog running away question because they were family pets and I’ve only had 1 cat as an adult.

I do not currently have one (I have no pets right now) but I took a rescue cat to the one vet beside my house before finding him a home.

        01-05-21: Dear Airedale Lover,

Please accept our apologies for not having responded to your application to adopt an Airedale. Our volunteers would normally respond to a new application within 2 weeks of receipt. However, we have been inundated with applications in the last quarter of 2020, and we find ourselves behind. We have enlisted additional volunteers and will do our best to contact you as soon as possible.

Please let me know if your situation has changed since you applied to adopt. And thank you for considering a rescued Airedale.

Sam and his housemates Nathan, Bryce – live in Knoxville

Sam grew up with a female Airedale mixed with a sheep dog named Sheba, a

Bryce has a dog allergy, so a hypoallergenic breed is a must. I explained that aireadales are not hypoallergenic. We agreed that the best test will be an Airedale home visit and Bryce needs to touch and rub his eyes/nose in the home visit aireale.

Rent – Sam rents his place and says it is not an issue to add a dog.

Sam Works from home and will likely have a similar schedule post covid.
          There is not a fence.
We don’t have a fence, but we have a back yard and side yard – how will these be used

He did mention that he would like to train the dog to walk off leash eventually.

Sam is interested in a female instead of a male.

              Hi Christina,

I wanted to let you know that Jon and I went over to meet Sam and Bryce with the dogs yesterday. From what I understand, Nathan – the third person – is an OTR truck driver and he was out on the road. Both Sam and Bryce were very nice, and they invited us in – so we actually did get a peek inside the house. As you mentioned, they live in a condo complex, so there is not a lot of yard, but they are on an end unit that has a side yard they could use to take a dog outside to potty. They also back up to a paved walking trail that I’m assuming goes around the complex. The house looked good considering their ages – it was tidy, no clutter.

I do think they are “dog people” and would likely do well with an energetic dog. He did keep mentioning that he wanted a dog that they could do things with – like run, hike, etc., so I’m not sure a senior dog would be an ideal match. Bryce did do as you suggested, rubbing his hands on the dogs and then on his face/eyes. We stayed there for a little over 30 minutes, and he didn’t have any kind of alarming reaction. He said as long as they kept the house clean, he would probably be ok, but he’d know yesterday if he was going to have a reaction.

I will note that Sam mentioned he was between jobs right now, so if one were to become available and you were considering placing with him, I would just make sure and ask if he’d be able to cover pet food, heartworm/flea meds, vet visits, grooming, etc., without any trouble. Bryce mentioned he is in school and currently doing all classes from home.

The other thing Sam mentioned is that his friends (or maybe his girlfriend?) has two cats that they’d eventually like to introduce the dog to (that don’t live there), but he said that would be down the road and they’d just see how that goes.

As long as they’re good about keeping the dog on a leash when outside, I don’t see any issues.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or anything else I can do to help!

              Thanks,
              Doug

9-2021 I moved Sam Haaf to did not adopt. He was hiking the AT this year. He helped with a transport in 2021 and was great.

                  Hi Christina!

Hope you’ve been doing well. I’ve actually moved to Texas, so I can’t help. I’ll be in Dallas until June if you need assistance here, and I’ll be back in Knoxville for 2 months this summer, but then I’m leaving the states.

                  Best,
